---------------------------------

After everything in Viridian City had come to an end, Liam left the city, deeply moved by the teary-eyed farewells of many children.

He headed toward his next destination, Pewter City, where the next Gym awaited him. What exciting adventures lay ahead? He had no idea but he definitely planned to find out.

"Oh no! Another Magikarp? At this rate, I could form an entire army of them! Does it really have to be like this? Are there really no other Pokémon in the river apart from Magikarp? Where'd they all go? Damn it… I'm out here losing all of my bait. I just want a chance at catching some better Pokémon. Is that really too much to ask for?"

Hoping to make it easier to defeat the Pewter Gym, Liam had decided to catch a Water- or Grass-type Pokémon during his journey. Considering that the next Gym after Pewter was Cerulean Gym, a strong Grass-type Pokémon was the best choice.

If that wasn't an option, a good Water-type would also suffice.

However, the route so far had been filled with nothing but Bellsprouts and Hoppips, which was driving Liam crazy. Even an Exeggcute or an Oddish would have been better!

By this point, Liam had lost all hope of catching a decent Grass-type Pokémon and decided to settle for a strong Water-type instead. He went to a riverside with his fishing rod, ready to reel in something worthwhile.

Yet, after an entire morning of fishing… he had caught dozens of Magikarp and not a single Pokémon from another species.

"Every time, it's a fucking Magikarp! I wonder if any of these are on the verge of evolving. Let me check."

Clinging to a shred of hope, Liam placed his hand on the Magikarp still dangling from the fishing line. However, it wasn't of any help.

The Magikarp was as ordinary as they get. Frustrated, he tossed it back into the water and decided to catch some more.

After all, there was bound to be at least one Magikarp that fit his criteria. His luck couldn't be that bad right?

Thankfully, he didn't have to wait long. After a few more unsuccessful attempts, he finally caught one that looked promising.

Liam: "..."

"Holy cow, I hit the jackpot!"

In an instant, Liam's triumphant yell echoed across the area. He clutched the Magikarp tightly, his face lit up with an expression of ecstasy.

His eyes gleamed as if he were holding a treasure.

"Hehehe, little Magikarp, you're coming with me! I guarantee you'll live the good life… Hehehe…"

With a shit eating grin plastered across his face, Liam was nearly drooling.

"Karp… Karp…"

The Magikarp flopped in his arms with a dazed expression, seemingly unsure of what to make of the situation. Just then...

"What's going on here?! Don't worry, I've arrived to help! Aaaah!"

"Growlithe!"

A police motorcycle skidded dramatically around the bend, and its rider leaped off, crashing right into Liam from behind. With a pained scream, Liam and the Magikarp were sent flying into the river.

"Oh no! This is bad! I hit someone! What do I do?! What do I do?! Growlithe, quick! You have to help me out"

The rider, a panicked Officer Jenny, finally noticed what had happened. She looked utterly flustered but eventually calmed down, opening the motorcycle's trunk and attempting to climb inside.

"Ouch! I'm stuck! It hurts! Growlithe, help me!"

"Growlithe! Growlithe!"

Growlithe, wearing a resigned expression, tugged on her uniform and freed her from the trunk.

Meanwhile, Liam staggered to his feet in the river. The water wasn't deep, and the riverbed was smooth with rocks, so he had quickly regained his footing. However, something felt off…

"Wait—where's my Magikarp?! Magikarp, where did you go?! How could you abandon me like this? We were supposed to be together forever! Magikarp!"

Realizing the Magikarp in his arms had disappeared, Liam despaired as he stared at the flowing river. Tears welled up in his eyes.

"I once had a Magikarp on the verge of evolution right in my grasp, but I didn't cherish it. Now that it's gone, I'm filled with regret... If the heavens give me another chance, I'll shout to the world—"

"WHO THE FUCK HIT ME?!"

Liam's back still ached from the collision, and he shouted angrily at the riverbank, determined to confront whoever had the audacity to attack him. He'd make sure they paid the price!

"Hehe, um… That was me. I didn't mean to hit you. I'm really sorry…"

A woman wearing a police cap peeked over the riverbank, looking apologetic as she clasped her hands together.

"Uh… Officer Jenny?! What are you doing here? Officer Jenny? Wait, you're not the one from Viridian City... Oh, right, you must be from somewhere else."

With just one glance, Liam recognized her as one of the famed Officer Jenny clan. Her demeanor was entirely different from the Officer Jenny in Viridian City.

He could only salute the mysterious nature of this unique family.

"Oh, you figured it out! The one in Viridian is my older sister and my role model! I only recently became a full-fledged officer!" she declared proudly.

Liam looked speechless. He began climbing out of the river, but his fishing spot was on a high ledge, and it proved difficult. He only made it halfway up before he started struggling.

"Here, let me help you up!"

Officer Jenny eagerly offered her hand. Liam glanced at her, a flicker of doubt in his eyes, but he reluctantly accepted her help.

The moment he grabbed her hand and pulled, there was a startled yelp as she tumbled toward the river. Liam instinctively let go, causing him to lose his balance and fall back into the water.

Growlithe sprang into action, biting onto Officer Jenny's uniform just in time to pull her back. Meanwhile, Liam once again found himself in the river, floating on his back and staring at the trees swaying gently in the breeze.

With a resigned sigh, he muttered, "Ah, the wind today sure is noisy today…"

It turned out that his luck was even worse.
