Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Guild's Trial

Ethan stood in the middle of the Silver Fang Guild's training hall, the dim lighting casting long shadows across the room. The walls were lined with weapons of various shapes and sizes, a testament to the guild's history and battles fought. Around him, guild members gathered, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. Captain Mira Lang had announced that the unranked newcomer would undergo a trial to determine his potential. The atmosphere was tense, the air charged with anticipation and whispers of doubt.

Mira stepped forward, her authoritative presence commanding attention. "Ethan Draven," she began, her voice steady, "you've shown us your strength during the dungeon break, but raw power is not enough. Today, we'll test your abilities, your strategy, and your resolve." She turned to the gathered hunters, her gaze sharp. "Who will volunteer to face him?"

A tall, muscular man with a scar running down his cheek stepped forward, a confident smirk playing on his lips. His reputation as one of the guild's strongest fighters preceded him. "I'll take him on," he said, his voice deep and resonant. "Let's see what this unranked kid is made of."

Mira nodded. "Thank you, Darius. Remember, this is a trial, not a fight to the death." She glanced at Ethan, her eyes softening just a fraction. "Are you ready?"

Ethan took a deep breath, his fists clenching at his sides. The energy within him stirred, responding to his determination. He could feel the weight of every gaze in the room, judging, waiting. "I'm ready."

The guild members moved back, forming a wide circle around the two combatants. Darius flexed his muscles, a faint glow enveloping his body as he activated his ability—enhanced strength. The air around him seemed to ripple with power. Ethan could feel the weight of their gazes, the unspoken challenge hanging in the air.

"Begin!" Mira's command echoed through the hall.

Darius charged, closing the distance between them in the blink of an eye. His fist shot forward, aiming for Ethan's head. Ethan's body reacted on instinct, the power surging through him as he sidestepped the attack with fluid grace. He countered with a swift punch to Darius' side, the impact sending a ripple of energy through the larger man.

Darius grunted, more surprised than hurt. "Not bad," he muttered, a hint of respect in his eyes. "But you'll have to do better than that."

He lunged again, this time with a series of rapid strikes, each one faster and more precise than the last. Ethan dodged and parried, his movements becoming more confident with each passing second. The energy within him seemed to anticipate Darius' attacks, guiding his actions. He felt a strange clarity, as if the world slowed down just enough for him to see the openings.

"You've got good instincts," Darius admitted, his breathing steady. "But how long can you keep it up?"

Ethan didn't respond, focusing instead on finding an opening. His mind raced, analyzing Darius' movements, searching for a pattern. He knew he couldn't rely solely on his newfound power; he needed to outthink his opponent. Memories of the dungeon break flashed through his mind, reminding him of the stakes.

As Darius swung his arm in a wide arc, Ethan saw his chance. He ducked under the blow and sprang forward, channeling the energy into his legs to increase his speed. In an instant, he was behind Darius, delivering a powerful kick to the back of his knee.

Darius stumbled, caught off guard by the sudden maneuver. Ethan didn't let up, following with a series of quick strikes to Darius' back and sides, each one aimed to unbalance and disorient him. The larger man growled, frustrated by Ethan's relentless assault. The crowd's murmurs grew louder, a mix of astonishment and approval.

"Enough!" Mira's voice rang out, halting the match.

Ethan stepped back, breathing heavily but victorious. Darius straightened, a rueful smile on his face. "You've got more than just raw power, kid," he said, extending a hand. "You've got potential."

Ethan took his hand, shaking it firmly. "Thanks," he replied, relief washing over him. The guild members murmured amongst themselves, impressed by what they had seen. Ethan felt a swell of pride but kept his expression neutral, knowing this was just the beginning.

Mira approached, her expression thoughtful. "Ethan Draven, you've passed the first part of your trial. But there's more to being a hunter than just combat skills. Tomorrow, you'll join us on a dungeon raid. There, we'll see how you perform in the field."

Ethan nodded, determination burning in his eyes. "I won't let you down."

Mira's lips curved into a faint smile. "We'll see." She turned to the rest of the guild. "Dismissed. Get some rest; we have a long day ahead of us."

The hunters dispersed, leaving Ethan to reflect on his victory. He knew this was just the beginning, a small step toward proving himself. The real challenge lay ahead, in the heart of the dungeons, where the true test of his abilities awaited. As the hall emptied, Ethan allowed himself a moment to breathe, to absorb the magnitude of what he had just achieved. He was ready for whatever came next.
