Chapter 22 - The kingdom rejoices 2

As Jane turned to return to the festivities, a soft, smooth voice cut through the peaceful corridor.

"My dear Jane, enjoying some solitude?" Thalia appeared, her emerald gown swishing elegantly as she approached. The smile on her lips didn't quite reach her eyes. "How... delightful."

Surprise flickered across Jane's face, and she struggled to find her voice. "Lady Thalia, I—"

"Oh, let's skip the formalities," Thalia purred, closing the distance between them. "After all, we're practically sisters now, aren't we?" Her laughter sparkled like a brittle crystal.

Jane tightened her grip on her gown. "Is there something you want?" she asked, keeping her voice steady despite the tension.

Thalia's eyes glinted with a predatory spark. "Just curious about how our little farm girl is settling into palace life. It must be quite the... adjustment." As she reached out to toy with a strand of Jane's hair, she added, "From milking cows to mingling with courtiers—sounds like a fairy tale, don't you think?"

Jane felt a chill run down her spine, but she maintained eye contact with Thalia, determined. "Every experience shapes us, Lady Thalia. I'm grateful for my past and excited for what lies ahead."

"Ah, but the past has a way of catching up with us, doesn't it?" Thalia leaned in, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I can only wonder what the court would think if they discovered just how... modest your beginnings really are."

Jane's heart raced, but thoughts of Dubois and their love fortified her spirit. She squared her shoulders, meeting Thalia's challenge with grace. "My past is no secret, Lady Thalia. It's an integral part of who I am."

For a brief moment, Thalia's smile faltered, caught off guard by Jane's composure. But she quickly regained her icy demeanor, lacing her words with a sugary malice. "Oh, but there's so much more to reveal, isn't there? The orphan girl who bounced from relative to relative, spending nights hungry and days laboring..."

Surprised at how much Thalia knew, Jane felt a surge of pride instead of shame. "You're right," she responded softly, but the conviction in her voice grew. "I've faced hardship, and it's taught me compassion, resilience, and the value of real love."

Thalia's gaze narrowed slightly, her poise wavering just a bit. "Love? Do you really believe that's enough to help you fit in here?"

"It's not about fitting in, Lady Thalia," Jane replied, her voice strong and unwavering. "It's about being true to myself and to those I care for. My love for Dubois—and his for me—is real. No gossip or threats can change that."

As Jane spoke, warmth filled her chest, a certainty that transcended titles and social standings. She was more than her past or the labels others assigned her. She was Jane Woods, soon to be a princess, and she knew she belonged right there.

Thalia's demeanor began to crack, her perfectly manicured fingers clenching at her sides. The air buzzed with tension, two wills clashing in silence. Jane stood tall, chin raised—a stark contrast to the timid girl who had first entered the palace.

"You speak of love as if it's a magical remedy," Thalia sneered, her melodic voice cutting sharply. "But what about duty? What about the traditions that have upheld this kingdom for centuries?"

A flicker of doubt crossed Jane's mind, but she pushed it aside. Taking a deep breath, she focused herself. "Love and duty can go hand in hand, Lady Thalia," she stated, her voice calm and empowered. "My commitment to Dubois extends to this kingdom and its people."

Thalia circled Jane like a predator, the fabric of her gown whispering against the stone floor. "Nice words, but can you back them up? Do you understand what it truly means to be a princess—to put the needs of an entire nation above your own?"

Jane's heart raced, yet she held Thalia's gaze steady. "I may not have been born into this life, but I've lived among the people. I understand their struggles and their hopes. That understanding is what I bring to the throne."

Thalia scoffed, but Jane pressed on, her words gaining momentum. "My love for Dubois goes beyond us. It's about the future we can build together and the good we can achieve for this kingdom."

Stepping closer, Jane closed the gap between them. "I love him, Lady Thalia, with everything I have. But I also care deeply for what he stands for and for what this kingdom can become. I will dedicate my life to that vision."

The weight of sincerity in Jane's voice hung in the air between them. Thalia opened her mouth but was rendered speechless.

Thalia's composure briefly cracked as she instinctively took a step back, her aristocratic façade slipping to reveal a hint of doubt. Jane stood firm, chin held high and shoulders squared.

"You're more formidable than I expected," Thalia admitted softly, almost in awe.

Jane's heart raced, but she kept her tone steady. "I've faced worse than sharp words and cold stares, Lady Thalia. If you think you can intimidate me into giving up Dubois or my place here, you've underestimated me."

Thalia's lips tightened, her hands fidgeting with the ornate fan at her waist. "We'll see about that, won't we?" she replied, although there was a hint of uncertainty in her voice.

As Thalia turned to leave, her heels clicking against the marble, Jane breathed a sigh of relief. The corridor seemed to brighten, feeling more open. She smoothed her gown, her hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline began to fade.

"Well said, my dear," came a familiar voice. Jane turned to see Prince Dubois approaching, his eyes shining with pride and affection.

"Dubois," she exhaled, relief washing over her. "How much did you hear?"

He took her hand and kissed it gently. "Enough to know I've chosen my princess wisely."

Warmth flooded Jane's cheeks. "I meant every word."

"I know," Dubois replied softly. "Shall we return to our guests? I believe there's a celebration waiting for us."

As they walked back toward the grand hall, Jane felt her mind racing. "Dubois, I hope I didn't overstep when I talked about the kingdom's future."

He squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You spoke from the heart, Jane. That's all I've ever wanted in a partner, both in life and in leadership."

As laughter and music grew louder with each step, Jane hesitated for a moment. "I'm still adjusting to all of this," she confessed.

Dubois halted, turning to face her. "We'll tackle it together," he promised. "Just like we've managed everything else."

Taking a deep breath, Jane nodded. They stepped into the grand hall together, hands entwined, feeling the warmth of their bond radiating through the crowd.

As the evening wore on, the festivities only seemed to intensify. Jane found herself swept up in a whirlwind of congratulations and cheerful chatter, her cheeks flushed from both dancing and the endless stream of compliments. Amid all the joy, she felt Dubois's gentle grip on her hand—a silent signal they had developed.

"Shall we slip away for a moment?" he whispered, his breath warm against her ear.

Jane nodded, thankful, as he led her to a quiet alcove hidden behind a tapestry. Once behind the heavy fabric, the lively sounds of the celebration faded into a soft hum.

"How are you holding up?" Dubois asked, searching her eyes.

Jane let out a long sigh, her posture easing. "It's... a lot," she admitted. "But in the best way. I never imagined I'd be here, like this, with you."

He brushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear with tender care. "I can't envision anyone else by my side," he said gently. "You've rescued me in more ways than you realize, Jane."

Tears threatened as emotion swelled within her. "We've saved each other," she whispered. "When I think back to where we started and how far we've come..."

"It's been quite the journey," Dubois agreed, a teasing smile playing on his lips. "From a peasant girl sneaking into the palace to the prince in a coma, to... this."

Jane couldn't help but laugh. "When you put it that way, it does sound a bit ridiculous."

"Maybe," he chuckled. "But it's our story, and I wouldn't trade a single moment of it."

Their eyes locked, and in that moment, Jane felt the weight of all they'd experienced together—the fears, the hope, the struggles, and the triumphs—all leading to this perfect connection.

"Whatever lies ahead," Jane said, her voice steady and confident, "we'll face it together."

Dubois nodded, pulling her closer. "Together," he echoed, sealing their promise with a soft kiss.

As they stepped out from the alcove, they were met with the sprawling grand hall, alive with light and movement. Courtiers danced in intricate patterns, their jewels shimmering under the glow of countless candles. Laughter mingled with the orchestra, creating a joyous symphony that filled the palace.

Jane glanced around, soaking in the vibrant colors and smiling faces. When her eyes landed on the King, he raised his goblet to her in a silent toast. She returned the gesture, warmth flooding her at his approval.

"Ready to join the festivities?" Dubois asked, extending his arm.

Jane took a deep breath, straightening up. "Absolutely," she smiled, linking her arm through his. As they moved forward together, she felt a surge of hope for the future—one that stretched out before them like the starlit sky beyond the palace walls.

As they danced across the marble floor, something caught Jane's eye—a flash of iridescent blue. She blinked, wondering if it was the champagne playing tricks or something more.

"Did you see that?" she whispered to Dubois, her gaze following the fleeting shimmer.

Dubois followed her gaze, a playful smile creeping onto his face. "What's caught your eye, my love?"

Jane felt her breath hitch as the glimmer transformed into a beautiful butterfly, its wings a striking mix of sapphire and gold. It flitted around them gracefully, leaving a trail of shimmering dust in its wake.

"That butterfly," Jane murmured, completely mesmerized. "It's... breathtaking."

The butterfly danced between them, its wings gently brushing against their linked hands. A warmth filled Jane's chest, bringing her such deep joy and love that she felt tears welling up in her eyes.

Dubois gasped softly. "Wow, now I see it. It's truly stunning."

For a brief moment, the butterfly landed on their intertwined fingers before taking off again. As it soared towards the high ceiling, Jane could've sworn she heard a gentle, distant melody.

"What do you think it means?" Dubois asked, his voice full of wonder.

Jane turned to him, her eyes sparkling. "I think... it's a blessing. A sign that our love is destined to endure."

As the butterfly vanished into the rafters, Jane felt a wave of serenity wash over her. Everything they had faced together, all the challenges they had overcome – it had all led them to this moment. Their love, tested and proven, would last.

"Shall we dance?" Dubois asked, extending his hand with a flourish.

Jane laughed, lighthearted and happy. "I was beginning to think you wouldn't ask."

As they twirled onto the dance floor, Jane caught one last glimpse of those shimmering blue wings. She smiled, silently expressing her gratitude for the magic that had touched her life. With Dubois at her side and the kingdom's blessing, she knew their journey was truly just beginning.
