Chapter 1 - Chapter 0

In the year 2031, a man named Ethan Cole, once a bright and ambitious IT prodigy, found himself at the pinnacle of success, yet deeply lonely and unsatisfied. At 35, he had everything the world seemed to promise: wealth, a promising career, and recognition. But his success had come at a steep price. Ethan had spent the better part of his life buried in code, algorithms, and the pursuit of money. He had ignored the simpler joys of living, the spontaneous adventures, the laughter with friends, the quiet moments of peace. In his final moments, as his life flickered away in a sterile hospital room, all he could think of was how he had wasted his precious time, never truly living, only chasing what the world told him was important. And in the stillness of that moment, as his breath grew faint and the machines flatlined, Ethan wished he could go back. He wished he could do it all over again.

Fate, however, had a different plan.

Ethan woke up with a jolt, gasping for air, not in a cold hospital bed but in a small, unfamiliar room. The harsh light of the morning sun filtered through cracked curtains, casting shadows on the peeling wallpaper. He was disoriented, his heart racing. What had happened? Where was he?

The room he found himself in was modest, old-fashioned even. He looked down at his handsā€”small, chubby hands of a child. His breath caught in his throat. Noā€¦ no, this wasn't possible. This wasn't happening. He was seven years old again. And the strangest thing about it was that he had no memory of how or why this had happened.

His mind raced, trying to make sense of it all. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The reality of his new existence started to settle in. His body may have been seven, but his mind, his soul, was the same. He was Ethan Cole. The IT genius. The man who had wasted his first life. But why was he here? Why had he been given another chance?

His thoughts were interrupted by the soft creak of a door opening. A frail, elderly man stood at the entrance of the room, his face wrinkled with age but warm, kind eyes that seemed to recognize something in Ethan. The man wore a thick sweater and carried a cane, but there was an aura of strength about him, as if he had lived through far more than his years suggested.

"Good morning, young Ethan," the man said in a gravelly voice, his words laced with affection. "Are you feeling alright?"

Ethan stared at him in confusion. "Whoā€¦ who are you?"

The man smiled gently, walking toward him. "I'm Henry Webb. I adopted you from the orphanage, remember? You've been here with me for a few weeks now."

Adopted? Ethan could barely wrap his head around the situation. He remembered being an adult, not thisā€¦ child in front of him. But Henry's gaze softened, and in that moment, Ethan could see something moreā€”a strange familiarity. A connection that ran deeper than mere coincidence.

"Iā€¦ I don't understand," Ethan muttered, his thoughts swirling. "Why did you adopt me?"

Henry's face grew somber as he sat down next to Ethan. "Well, you see, I've been alone for a long time. I lost my daughter many years ago, and the griefā€¦ it never truly left me." His voice trembled slightly, but his eyes remained steady. "When I saw you at that volunteer home care centerā€¦ I saw her. Her eyes, her soulā€¦ it was as if she was standing before me again." Henry's gaze dropped for a moment, then returned to Ethan. "I knew then, I had to take you in. Maybe in some way, you are her, or maybe you're just a chance for me to do things right again. I don't knowā€¦ but I believe we were meant to find each other."

Ethan felt a pang of emotion he hadn't expected. This man, who had lost so much, had taken him in, a strange child, because of a deep, inexplicable connection. It was almost as if the universe had conspired to bring them together.

"You've got a lot of questions, don't you?" Henry continued, his tone softening. "But don't worry, we'll figure it out. We have time now."

As Ethan sat there, trying to make sense of the situation, his mind drifted back to his former life. The regrets began to surface again, the haunting realization of how he had lived in a race for success, only to find himself empty in the end. He had never lived fully, never embraced the beauty of life beyond work and achievement.

In this new world, in this strange second chance, would he make the same mistakes again? Or would he find a way to live differently, to experience life in all its fullness?

He wasn't sure yet, but one thing was clearā€”his new life was only just beginning. And for the first time, he had the chance to make it count.

Henry stood, his eyes twinkling. "Come, Ethan. There's much to show you. My shop, for instance. It's been in the family for generations, and I think you might just find itā€¦ interesting."

Ethan followed Henry out of the room, and they made their way through the narrow hallways of the old house. The scent of old books and antique treasures filled the air. The shop Henry owned had been in his family since 1850, passed down through generations, each with their own stories and histories. It was a place steeped in memories, and Ethan couldn't help but feel a strange pull toward it. It felt like more than just a shopā€”it felt like the key to understanding his new life, his purpose, and perhaps, even the answer to the questions he now carried in his heart.

But first, he had to live it. He had to experience it.

And maybe, just maybe, he would finally learn how to live a life without regrets.Ā
