"A Demon hunt?" Shin asked.
"That's right. Now that you guys are 10 years old, you two should at least know how to deal with them. Now tell me, what have you learnt about demons?" Merlin-san asked.
"When a living creature is unable to control the magic within its body, it goes berserk and starts attacking everything indiscriminately. That's what a demon is." I recalled what I had read.
"Didn't you save a country from a demon that had almost destroyed it many years ago grandpa? If I remember correctly, they still consider you a hero there." Shin added.
"Hohoho, that's right! Now, why don't we get started. First, let's try to find a demon. Start by spreading your mana around your environment. If it comes into contact with another source of mana, you'll be able to detect it. Although, it is quite difficult to get a hang of if your mana control isn't at a certain level." Merlin-san began. While he was in the middle of explaining, Shin and I were already starting to 'get the hang of it'.
'Hmm, sounds simple enough.' I thought to myself.
I began expanding my mana, telling myself 'ok spread it out as wide as possible, like maybe the visual of a pond with other mana sources being pebbles that cause ripples, or maybe SONAR."
With that visualisation, I soon managed to pick up the mana of several animals and critters scattered around the jungle. From deers to ants, I could see everything. Hell, I could even sense melida-san back at our house.
I looked over at Shin thinking 'hmm, it seems he's got the hang of it as well. It seems I was a bit faster though. Heh. Huh, I guess that creepy thing must be the demon.'
I was not the only one who had sensed it as Shin's expression turned sour.
"Ho, so both of you found it? That magic power belongs to a demon. Remember it well." Merlin-san explained.
"Grandpa! We should hurry and deal with that thing. Otherwise, something bad might happen!" Shin yelled.
"You're right shin, this one is particularly nasty." Merlin-san agreed.
We rushed through the forest, traversing hundreds of meters in mere minutes. Soon, we came across a gigantic bear, very similar to the one I had run into when I first arrived in this world. It seemed to be feasting on a human corpse, having destroyed a carriage which was passing through the forest. Having seen us, the bear rose up, moving towards us on its hind legs, aiming to attack us. Unfortunately for it, I made my move first.
'Well hello there, dipshit.' I thought to myself, getting a bit excited.
'You see although that bear had been killed by merlin-san at that time, i couldn't stop thinking about how I would handle something like that when i was forced to fight one of those things again, and now you show up, a perfect training dummy for my new spell.' While this internal monologue played, I gathered some mana, before beginning to visualize my new spell.
'Let's take some radiation and concentrate it, yes, think highly condensed infrared. And once you reach the same intensity as a star, concentrate it at a singular point, aim and fire.' thinking this I point at the bear with a finger gun, before suddenly, its eyes pop out and it falls over.
"Wow david! How did you do that?!" Shin asked, amazed.
"I just fired an insane amount of radiation at it, concentrating it at a singular point. The amount was so high that the brain literally started to cook." I replied.
"Good job David. I think we can call this demon hunt a success. Now, shall we head home?"
"Wow! But I want to fight one too!" Shin complained.
"Oh yes, you need to fight one too! Very well, let's find one for you as well." merlin-san said as we started to search again. Soon enough, we found another mana source that belonged to a demon. This time, Shin rushed off first, with the two of us right behind him.
Not long after, we encountered a demon tiger. Shin stopped in front of it, about 20 meters away, while we were a couple feet behind shin. The tiger also took notice of our presence, as it began to growl menacingly.
Shin immediately sprang into action, sword in hand, using the 'jet boots' he had developed to quickly close the distance between himself and the beast. The tiger also noticed his presence, leaping onto him.
That was a mistake on the tiger's part, as Shin quickly manoeuvred to the left, dodging the tiger, before leaping at it from the side, using the 'vibration sword' he had also created to cut its head clean off, in a blindingly fast attack.
"I DID IT!" Shin yelled excitedly, looking at us.
"Yeah, very well done shin.it was perfectly executed. On par with david." Merlin-san praised.
"Really?! YAYY!!" Shin cheered joyfully.
"Yes. but what enchantment did you use on those boots?" he asked.
"Oh those? Umm.. i-it's nothing special, really!" shin nervously said, avoiding the question.
"Really?" Merlin-san pressed.
"It's nothing special. Just something shin and I came up with to enhance our movement." I began, realizing Shin was getting nervous.
"Oh, is that so? Well, have you told her about it?" he questioned.
"Not really, they weren't anything special, so we decided not to. It's not like we created boots that allow for flight or something." I explained.
"Hahh, you do know that she would go crazy if she heard that, right?" merlin-san sighed, having given up all motivation to continue the conversation.
"Grandpa, David, let's go home already! I'm getting hungry." Shin said, changing the topic.
"True. I want to eat steak today." I concurred.
"Alright, you two brats. I'll get the fire going. Shin gets the vegetables white David gets the meat ready. I think Michel and Melida must be getting hungry too. We'll have some steak with vegetable stew."
