Sophia and Liam stood in stunned silence, the weight of Eleanor's words settling heavily on them.
"Find him," Sophia repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. "She's asking us to find James."
Liam's gaze drifted to the lake. "If he was killed here, they might have hidden his body in the water."
Sophia's stomach turned at the thought, but she nodded. "We have to look. She won't rest until we do."
They returned to the car to grab the small set of tools Liam always carried with him. Using a long metal pole, they began probing the shallow water near the shoreline, searching for anything out of place.
Hours passed with no success, and Sophia's frustration grew. "What if we're wrong? What if he's not here?"
Liam shook his head. "We're not wrong. She led us here for a reason."
As dawn began to break, Liam's pole hit something solid beneath the water. His heart leapt. "Sophia, I've got something!"
They worked together to clear the debris, pulling a heavy object from the lakebed. It was a wooden chest, its surface warped and waterlogged.
Sophia's hands trembled as they pried it open. Inside were skeletal remains, wrapped in tattered fabric. A locket identical to the one they had found at the tree was clutched in the bony fingers.
"It's him," Sophia whispered, tears streaming down her face. "It's James."
Liam placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We've found him. Now we can give him the peace he deserves."
They called the local authorities, who arrived to recover the remains. As the sun rose over the lake, Sophia and Liam watched in silence, their emotions raw.
Back at the manor, the atmosphere had changed. The oppressive weight that had lingered for so long seemed to lift, replaced by a quiet sense of relief.
That night, as Sophia prepared for bed, she glanced out the window and saw two figures standing beneath the magnolia tree. It was James and Eleanor, their hands entwined, their faces peaceful.
Sophia smiled, her heart full. "They're finally together."
As the figures faded into the night, Sophia knew their story wasn't just a tragedy—it was a testament to the enduring power of love.
