Chapter 5 - CHAPTER FIVE; “EVERYTHING REG LACKS..

As Sophia walked home, the cool evening air enveloped her, but her mind was still warm with the memory of Lucas's smile. She couldn't help but replay their encounter in her head, from the moment he saved her to the way he handed her his card with a hint of mischief in his eyes.

"That was a nice time shared with him, indeed." Sophia admitted to herself. She felt a flutter in her chest as she recalled the spark of attraction between them. Lucas was charming, confident, and mysterious - a combination that left her intrigued.

As she turned the corner onto her street, Sophia's thoughts drifted to the card in her bag. "Just a call away," he had said. She wondered what it would be like to reach out to him, to see if their connection was more than just a chance encounter.

Shaking her head, Sophia chuckled to herself. "Don't be silly," she thought. "You're not going to call him." But the thought lingered, like a whispered promise of possibility.

"But still," Sophia thought, her mind wandering back to Lucas, "there was something about him that seemed different. Maybe it was the way he looked at me, like he really saw me, or the way he smiled.

She sighed, shaking her head. "No, Soph, don't be foolish. You can't trust any man, especially not a billionaire. They're all the same - charming, manipulative, and only looking out for themselves."

The memory of her ex's betrayal still stung, and Sophia couldn't help but wonder if Lucas was just like him. "Probably," she thought, her heart hardening. "They're all probably the same.

The memory of Lucas's smile lingered in Sophia's mind, a fleeting sense of hope and connection. But like a fragile glass shattered on concrete, her thoughts crashed back to reality. The pregnancy. The reason she'd been so lost in thought, the reason she'd almost gotten herself killed.

Sophia's heart sank, the weight of her situation crushing her. She felt trapped, alone, and scared. The fear of being a single mother, of raising a child without a father, of being judged and rejected by her family and society... it all came flooding back.

She thought of the baby growing inside her, innocent and unaware of the turmoil surrounding its existence. Sophia's eyes stung as tears threatened to fall. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of uncertainty, with no lifeline in sight.

The memory of Lucas, of his kind eyes and gentle smile, seemed like a distant dream now. Sophia's mind was consumed by the harsh reality of her situation, and she couldn't escape the feeling of despair that held her.

She knew she couldn't let Reg find out about the baby. His toxic behavior and manipulative ways would put their child in harm's way. She couldn't bear the thought of her innocent child being raised by him, or worse, turning out like him.

"I won't let that happen," Sophia whispered to herself, a fierce resolve burning within her. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect my baby."

She knew society would judge her, a single mother with a child out of wedlock. But Sophia didn't care. She'd rather face the stigma and raise her child on her own than risk Reg's poisonous influence.

"I didn't sleep around to get pregnant," Sophia thought, her mind racing. "This baby is a result of a toxic relationship, but I won't let that define us. I'll make sure my child knows love, kindness, and respect - everything Reg lacks."

Sophia finally reached the front door of her apartment, exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster she'd been on. She pushed open the door, locked it behind her, and let out a deep breath, feeling a sense of relief wash over her.

She tossed her handbag onto the bed, kicked off her shoes at the doorstep, then padded into the kitchen to quench her thirst. She grabbed a glass from the rack, filled it with water from the tap, and drank deeply, feeling the cool liquid soothe her parched throat.

After taking a few more deep breaths, Sophia began to unwind, shedding her clothes as she made her way to the shower. The warm water cascaded down her skin, washing away the stress and anxiety of the day.

Feeling refreshed, Sophia wrapped herself in a towel and headed back to the kitchen to prepare a simple meal - fried eggs and toast. She cracked some eggs into a pan, watching as they sizzled and cooked, the aroma filling her small apartment.

As she waited for her food to cook, Sophia's mind began to wander back to Lucas, and the unexpected encounter they'd shared. She pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the present moment, and the simple pleasures of a warm meal and a quiet evening alone as she read romantic novels online. Something she was very much used to now.

Sophia's eyes widened as she saw the flurry of missed calls from Madison. "What's going on?" she wondered, a sense of concern creeping in. She quickly tapped the screen to call her best friend back.

Madison answered on the first ring, her voice a mix of relief and worry. "Soph, oh my god, I've been trying to reach you for hours! I've been so scared. What happened? You just disappeared."

Madison said as Sophia rushed back to the kitchen checking on the eggs, as she held the phone with her shoulder.

She took a deep breath, trying to process the events of the day. "I'm so sorry, Mads. I had a crazy day. I'll tell you everything, but first, are you okay? You sound really worried."

Madison exhaled heavily. "I'm fine, but I need to hear your voice, know that you're safe. You're scaring me, Soph."

Sophia smiled, feeling grateful for her friend's concern. "I'm safe, Mads. I promise. I'll tell you everything. Just give me a minute."

She said quickly dropping the phone on the counter top, as she quickly took the frying pan off the stove.
