Chapter 2: The Eerie Loop

The next morning, I woke up in a cold sweat, jolted out of a dream that felt all too vivid. The events of the previous night replayed in my mind on an endless loop: the factory, the puzzle, the cold, indifferent man, and the mysterious woman who appeared out of nowhere. It all seemed like an absurd nightmare.

But when I glanced down, the small device was still in my hand. The cold metal pressed against my palm brought me back to reality. This wasn't a dream—it had really happened.

As I grabbed my phone, the screen flickered before displaying an unexpected message:

"The Intelligence System has been activated."

I froze, my heart skipping a beat. "System? Who are you?"

Another line appeared on the screen, slowly materializing:

"I am the Intelligence System, your assistant."

"Assistant?" I frowned. "Why didn't you say anything yesterday?"

"System permissions are unlocked upon task completion. You are now a participant in the Trial of Wisdom."

"Trial of Wisdom? What trial?" I tried to press further, but the screen abruptly shifted to a cold, emotionless message:

"Beginner Task: Return to the South District Old Factory and complete the escape room trial."

My mind reeled. This was the same task as yesterday. Why was it repeating? I had already completed it!

At 10 PM, I found myself back at the decrepit factory. The bright lights and the thin, tall man were exactly as they had been the night before. Nothing had changed.

"Mr. Dean, it's good to see you again," he said with a faint smile.

"Again?" I asked, narrowing my eyes. "What do you mean? Isn't this the same trial as yesterday?"

His smile deepened, tinged with an air of mystery. "I'm afraid I don't understand what you're talking about. Every participant's trial is unique. Tonight marks your beginning."

"Unique?" I muttered through gritted teeth. His words felt like a cruel joke.

The screen rose once more, displaying the exact same escape room puzzle from the night before. Even the numbers were identical.

I stood there, utterly bewildered.

The task began, but my mind was a jumbled mess. As I stared at the screen, a sense of déjà vu washed over me. I could vividly recall the solution from the previous night—the steps, the logic, everything.

It was impossible. I shouldn't have remembered it so clearly unless…

My thoughts raced. Hesitantly, I entered the answers from memory. To my astonishment, the screen flashed green again:

"Task Complete."

The thin man remained as stoic as ever. "Well done, Mr. Dean."

"Wait!" I shouted, my voice trembling. "What is going on here? Why is everything exactly the same as yesterday?"

He regarded me with a faint, knowing smile. "Mr. Dean, welcome to the next stage."

I tried to question him further, but he turned away, leaving behind the same contract and a new task prompt on the screen.

I slumped into the chair, staring at the contract's densely packed clauses. The ominous line stared back at me:

"Those who withdraw will face irreversible consequences."

The same line as yesterday.

My pen hovered above the paper as my mind churned with unease. Before I could decide, my phone buzzed again, and a new message appeared on the screen:

"Task failure will trigger a time reset."

I froze, whispering to myself, "Time reset? What does that mean?"

The system responded, its voice cold and detached:

"The time loop mechanism has been activated. Each task failure will return you to the initial state until the task is completed."

"What the hell?" My voice quivered. "Are you saying I'm trapped in some kind of loop?"

The system didn't answer directly. Instead, another message appeared:

"Each loop will optimize conditions, but the cost will gradually increase."

"Cost?" Panic crept into my voice. "What cost?"

The screen went dark. No further response.

Resigned, I signed the contract and was led into a new escape room. This task was far more complex—virtual streets filled with hidden clues, a ticking countdown that grated on my nerves, and an overwhelming sense of urgency.

Yet, as I navigated the task, the sense of repetition returned. Certain symbols, building layouts, and even the advertisements at the end of the virtual street seemed eerily familiar.

"What is happening here?" I muttered under my breath.

This time, I decided to confront the system. "What do you want from me? Why does everything repeat?"

The screen flickered, displaying a cryptic response:

"Each loop upgrades your intelligence."

After completing the task, I collapsed into a chair, utterly spent. The thin man handed me a bottle of water, his expression as impassive as ever. "Mr. Dean, you're adapting to the loop faster than we anticipated."

"You admit it?" I snapped, glaring at him. "You knew this was a loop all along?"

"Loop?" He gave a faint smile, one that sent chills down my spine. "We prefer to call it the 'Intelligence Filter.' You'll soon understand its purpose."

"Purpose?" My voice cracked, teetering on the edge of hysteria. "To send me to my death over and over again? You don't care about the lives of those who fail, do you?"

The thin man didn't reply. Instead, he turned and walked away, his figure disappearing into the light.

My phone buzzed again. This time, the message left me completely stunned:

"The loop has entered the third layer. A critical juncture is approaching."

Back at home, my head felt like it was about to explode. The concept of being trapped in a time loop was maddening. Worse, I had no choice but to keep moving forward, no matter the cost.

Then, I remembered the woman from the factory. She had warned me: "The system isn't helping you; it's using you."

Her words struck me like a lightning bolt. Was this loop truly a test, or was it part of a larger, sinister scheme?

The screen lit up again, and the system's voice echoed in my mind:

"Mike Dean, welcome to the next stage."

At that moment, I realized there was no turning back.

This chapter deepens the tension by introducing the concept of a time loop, forcing the protagonist to confront the endless cycle and the stakes behind it. It sets the stage for further exploration of the Intelligence System's motives and the League's hidden agenda. If you're satisfied, I can proceed to write Chapter 3!
