Chereads / The Cons and Consequences / Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

The air crackled with anticipation, a buzz that vibrated through the room, a symphony of chatter and laughter. Zosha, a vision in shimmering silk, moved through the crowd like a goddess, her smile a dazzling weapon. I watched, my gaze steady, my heart a steady beat against the thrum of the music. Tonight, she was the bait, the lure, the one who would draw in our target. And I, the shadow, the silent observer, the one who would execute the plan.

Our target was Alistair, a man who collected more than just art. He collected power, influence, and the thrill of the chase. Tonight, he was hosting a lavish gala at his sprawling mansion, a gathering of the city's elite. Tonight, he was about to become our biggest mark.

"He's over there," Zosha whispered, her voice barely audible over the din of the party. She gestured towards a man standing near the bar, his back to them. "The one with the silver hair and the diamond cufflinks. He's our ticket to freedom."

I nodded, my eyes fixed on Alistair. He was already hooked, his gaze lingering on Zosha, his expression a mixture of admiration and desire. He was playing right into her hands.

"He's already hooked, Zosha," I said, my voice low and steady. "He's fallen for your act. He thinks you're a vulnerable young woman in need of a protector."

"Good," Zosha said, her smile widening. "Let's reel him in."

She winked at me, a silent signal that the game was afoot. I watched as she approached Alistair, her steps light and graceful, her voice a delicate whisper. "Excuse me," she said, "I seem to have lost my escort. Would you mind...?"

Alistair, captivated by her beauty and apparent vulnerability, was instantly charmed. He offered her his arm, and Zosha, with a grateful smile, accepted. As they moved through the crowd, I slipped away, blending into the shadows, my eyes scanning for our prize - a priceless antique clock that Alistair had recently acquired. It was worth a fortune, and it was ours for the taking.

I navigated the throngs of guests, my movements fluid and silent, my senses on high alert. I reached the room where the clock was displayed, a masterpiece of intricate detail, guarded by a security camera and a lone guard. But I had studied their routines, their patterns, their weaknesses. I knew exactly when to make my move.

The guard, distracted by a group of guests, turned his back for a moment. I seized the opportunity, my fingers nimble and sure, slipping past him and approaching the clock. With a practiced swiftness, I removed the glass case, the weight of the clock a reassuring presence in my hands.

But just as I was about to slip away, a voice called out, "Excuse me, miss. Is everything alright?"

My heart jolted. The guard was facing me, his eyes narrowed. I had been caught.

My heart was pounding. I had been caught!

"Everything's fine," I said, trying to sound calm. I quickly put the clock back in its case.

"I was just looking at it," I said.

The guard looked at me, not sure if he believed me. "Just don't touch anything," he said. "It's really expensive."

I nodded, looking around for Zosha. I needed to get out of there, fast.

"I'll keep my hands to myself," I said, trying to sound cool.

The guard looked away, and I slipped away.

I found Zosha in the hallway. "What happened?" she asked.

"I got caught, but I got away," I said.

"Good," Zosha said. "You're good at this."

"We need to go," I said. "Now."

We ran down the hallway. We had to get out of the mansion before the guards knew what was going on.

"I'll distract them," Zosha said. "You get the clock."

I nodded. I had to get the clock out of the mansion.

Just as I reached the clock, a loud alarm went off. Lights started flashing, and people were screaming. It was crazy!

Zosha yelled, "Go! Get the clock!"

I grabbed the clock and ran. I had to get out of there! I had to get to the van!

I ran out of the mansion into the night air. I saw the van, and Azalea was waiting for us.

I jumped into the van, holding the clock. Zosha jumped in right behind me.

"Let's go!" she shouted.

Azalea started the van, and we drove away, leaving the mansion behind. We were free. We had done it!

We drove away from the mansion, really fast. I was still excited, but also tired.

"We did it!" Zosha shouted. She held up the clock. "We got the clock!"

Azalea, our friend who drove us, smiled. "Good job, girls," she said. "That was close."

We all breathed a sigh of relief. We had done it! We had tricked the guards and gotten the clock.

We went back to our place, a regular apartment building. It was our safe place.

We opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

"To the Con's and Consequences," Zosha said, raising her glass. "May our risks always pay off."

We clinked our glasses. We were a team, and we had done something big.

Someone knocked on the door. It was our boss, a guy who worked in the shadows.

He came in and looked at the clock. "Nice work," he said. "It's a good one."

He gave us a thick envelope full of money. "Your payment," he said.

We counted the money. It was a lot! We had never had so much money before. We could do anything we wanted now.

But as we looked at the money, we started to feel a little uneasy. We had won, but we knew there would be consequences.

We had played the game, and we had won. But the price of winning was high, and we were just starting to see how high it really was.
