Synopsis
Robert was dead. Well, that wasn't unusual. People died all the time. But he was suddenly given a new chance at a different life. A life in a world of superheroes and supervillains. Something he had previously considered a fantasy. Having Lex Luthor's mind was just a bonus. Although it wasn't much when there were people like Dr. Victor Von Doom, Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Hank Pym. Still, he would take full advantage of the opportunity.

Chapter 1

Okay, so being a superhero fan was nice. But being sent to their world was bad. There were crazy superpowers that could change reality with just their thoughts and words.

It was interesting to read. But these stories are extremely painful to bear personally.

Imagine that you are living your life peacefully, and suddenly villains fly out of the sky. If you are lucky, you might live until the heroes arrive. If not, you are just another victim, whose death will ultimately affect no one.

Perhaps this is his new destiny.

He had an ordinary life. At 25, he had graduated from university and was working on his PhD thesis.

Until that very ordinary day.

A day he now regrets. How was he to know that someone had decided to blow themselves up in a cafe where there were innocent people.

It was unexpected for him. He heard nothing. He saw nothing. For a second everything was normal, and then it wasn't. A moment - and he died instantly. Nothing happened in slow motion. He didn't see the world spinning, or feel the fire engulfing him.

It was all over before he even realized it.

There is no slow death, no slow loss of consciousness. It all happened in a split second, and he didn't have time to understand anything.

"So what do you want?" asked the ethereal glowing ball.

"DC or Marvel?" the ball of light continued in a soft voice.

He didn't know what to think about it.

He hoped that in his afterlife he would be in heaven, living with the angels and enjoying the company of Jesus.

But then this ball appeared. A glowing ball that gave him a chance. A chance he didn't know how to use.

"Marvel," he answered after some thought.

Although both Marvel and DC were pretty shitty universes. But he would still go along with Thanos, Skrulls and other villains. Than face the likes of Darkseid, Joker, Anti-Monitor, etc.

He was more afraid of the DC Universe. Darkseid wanted to enslave everyone with free will. That was far worse than Thanos's desire to establish balance.

Give him death any time he wants, rather than just become a mindless husk. Not to mention, the Joker was scary. That crazy psycho was haunting. Then there was Luthor and many others. Villains who were more insightful and far more dangerous.

Marvel had its share of supervillains. But it knew it could find a way to have superpowers that was much easier and less dangerous than the DC Universe.

"You will not have any superpowers from the start. Everything you want, you must obtain yourself," the ball of light slowly proclaimed.

Robert nodded. It was a fair deal. What happened next would depend on which world he was sent to.

"However, you can only possess the mind and memories of one person from the Universe you left... Choose carefully. The person you choose must not have superpowers," the ball spoke in its usual soft and gentle voice.

Robert remained silent. The answer was simple. The Presence spoke of a human mind and memories. Brainwave was out of competition because he wasn't human. That left three options. Mr. Terrific, Batman, and Lex Luthor.

Batman and Lex Luthor were the most obvious choices, as both were the smartest and most intelligent people on Earth in DC Comics.

"I would like to have the memories and mind of Lex Luthor," he said slowly.

Batman was smart and a master strategist. But Lex Luthor was more his type.

Lex was far more dangerous than Batman because of his ambitious nature. He could have been a powerful force if only he had been less selfish.

Then you will have this," came a voice from inside the ball of light.

Suddenly the ball began to grow and glow more brightly.

In the dark abyss where Robert had been speaking with the Presence, there was an explosion of light.

Robert's consciousness faded a second time as the ball began to grow in size and glow brighter.

Gradually the light stopped glowing brighter. In the place where the ball levitating in the air had been, a figure slowly appeared.

A man in a coat and hat stood leaning on a cane
