The journey to the steppes was long and arduous, but the change in scenery brought some relief. Rolling green plains stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with small villages and the occasional herd of wild horses.
Darian led them to a hidden outpost nestled in a valley. The building was unassuming, little more than a weathered tavern, but the tension in the air was palpable as they entered.
"Stay close," Darian warned as they walked through the door.
Inside, a crowd of rough-looking individuals eyed them suspiciously. At the back of the room sat a woman with sharp features and piercing amber eyes. She leaned back in her chair, a sly smile playing on her lips.
"Darian Voss," she said, her voice smooth as silk. "I never thought I'd see you again."
"Good to see you too, Kyra," Darian replied, though his tone lacked warmth.
Kyra's gaze shifted to Liora and Elias. "And who are your new friends?"
"None of your business," Darian said. "We need your help."
Kyra raised an eyebrow. "Help? From me? That's a bold request, considering you left me to rot last time we worked together."
"You're alive, aren't you?" Darian countered.
Kyra chuckled. "Fair enough. What do you need?"
Darian hesitated, then said, "Information. Resources. A way to outmaneuver Raven."
Kyra's smile widened. "Raven? Now that's interesting. I've heard whispers about him—and the shards he's after."
She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I'll help you, but it'll cost you."
"What do you want?" Darian asked.
Kyra's eyes gleamed. "When this is over, you owe me. And trust me, I'll collect."
Reluctantly, Darian agreed, sealing the deal with a firm handshake.
