Chapter 13 - The Fractured Path

The tension in the Bennett household had reached a fever pitch. Elena and Claire's late-night escapades had not gone unnoticed by their parents, who demanded answers about their disheveled appearance and the worry etched across their faces. But the sisters deflected, exchanging vague excuses that only seemed to deepen their parents' suspicion.

The truth, Elena knew, was too dangerous to reveal. Naomi's life was hanging by a thread, and any misstep could bring her harm or worse.

By the time the sun rose, neither sister had slept. They sat in Elena's room, the recorded conversation playing on a loop as they tried to piece together the cryptic fragments of information.

"'She's out of the picture for now,'" Claire repeated, her voice hushed. "What does that even mean? Where could they have taken her?"

Elena rubbed her temples, exhaustion clouding her thoughts. "I don't know, but they mentioned someone else—someone giving orders. Jared isn't acting alone."

Claire sighed, leaning back against the bed. "Who are these people? What do they want with Naomi?"

Elena hesitated, her mind flashing back to Naomi's cryptic behavior over the past few weeks. The hushed phone calls, the guarded expressions…

"Maybe Naomi knows something," Elena said slowly. "Something they don't want getting out."

Later that day, Elena and Claire decided to follow their only lead: Jared. Though they knew confronting him directly was risky, they couldn't sit idly by while Naomi remained missing.

Their search led them to a quiet park on the outskirts of town, where Jared was known to hang out with his usual crowd of troublemakers. But when they arrived, the park was empty—except for a lone figure sitting on a bench.

The man was older, dressed in a worn leather jacket with a cigarette dangling from his lips. His sharp eyes flicked toward the sisters as they approached, and Elena felt a shiver run down her spine.

"Looking for someone?" the man drawled, exhaling a cloud of smoke.

Claire shot Elena a wary glance, but Elena stepped forward, her voice steady. "We're looking for Jared. Do you know where he is?"

The man smirked, tapping ash onto the ground. "Depends. What do you want with him?"

"That's none of your business," Claire snapped, her arms crossed.

The man chuckled. "Feisty, aren't you? Look, I might know where Jared is, but information like that doesn't come cheap."

Elena frowned, her patience wearing thin. "We don't have time for games. If you know something, just tell us."

The man studied her for a moment, his smirk fading. "You're in over your head, kid. Whatever you think you're chasing—it's bigger than you. Walk away while you still can."

Elena's fists clenched at her sides. "We're not walking away. Now tell us where Jared is."

The man sighed, flicking his cigarette to the ground. "Fine. Last I heard, he's holed up at the old auto shop on Route 9. But don't say I didn't warn you."

The Auto Shop

The auto shop was a dilapidated building on the outskirts of town, its windows boarded up and its parking lot overrun with weeds. As Elena and Claire approached, a sense of unease settled over them.

"Are we really doing this?" Claire whispered, clutching the pepper spray she'd brought for protection.

Elena nodded, her jaw set. "We don't have a choice. If Jared knows where Naomi is, we have to find out."

They crept around the side of the building, peering through a broken window. Inside, they could see Jared pacing back and forth, his phone pressed to his ear.

"I told you, I'm handling it," Jared said, his voice tense. "No, I haven't heard from her. She's not my responsibility anymore."

Elena exchanged a look with Claire before motioning for her sister to stay back. Carefully, she pushed open the door, the creak of the hinges making Jared whip around in alarm.

"What the—" Jared started, but his words were cut off as Elena stepped into the room, her eyes blazing.

"Where is she?" Elena demanded.

Jared's expression shifted from surprise to annoyance. "What are you doing here?"

"You know why I'm here," Elena said, her voice cold. "Where's Naomi?"

Jared sneered. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't lie to me," Elena snapped, stepping closer. "We heard you. We know you're involved."

Jared's eyes darted toward the door, but before he could make a move, Claire appeared behind him, blocking his escape.

"You're not going anywhere," Claire said, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes.

Jared sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You don't get it, do you? This isn't about you. Naomi got herself into this mess, and now she's paying the price."

"What mess?" Elena demanded.

Jared hesitated, his gaze flicking between the sisters. "You don't know who she really is, do you? Naomi's been keeping secrets from everyone, including you."

Jared's words hung in the air, heavy with implication. Elena's heart pounded as she tried to process what he was saying.

"What are you talking about?"She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jared shook his head, a bitter smile on his lips. "You think Naomi's some innocent girl caught up in the wrong crowd? She's not. She knows exactly what she's doing—and exactly who she's dealing with."

"Then tell us," Claire said, her voice sharp. "Who is she dealing with?"

Jared hesitated for a moment before sighing. "There's a group. They call themselves the Obsidian Circle. They're not the kind of people you want to mess with. Naomi got in their way, and now she's paying for it."

Elena's blood ran cold. The Obsidian Circle. The name sounded ominous, like something out of a nightmare.

"What do they want with her?" Elena asked.

Jared shrugged. "Beats me. All I know is that they don't take kindly to loose ends. If you're smart, you'll forget about Naomi and stay out of their way."

Elena's hands clenched into fists. "We're not abandoning her."

Jared sighed, looking genuinely frustrated. "Suit yourself. But don't say I didn't warn you."

As the sisters left the auto shop, the weight of Jared's words pressed down on them. The Obsidian Circle. It sounded like something out of a bad movie, but the fear in Jared's voice had been real.

"We need to find out more about them," Elena said as they walked down the darkened street.

Claire nodded, though her expression was grim. "And we need to find Naomi before it's too late."

The night stretched on, the shadows seeming darker than ever. But despite the fear and uncertainty, one thing was clear: they couldn't turn back now.

Naomi's life depended on them, and they wouldn't stop until they brought her home.
