Chapter 29 - Book 2 Chapter 18: The Celestial Contest Begins

The day of the Celestial Contest dawned bright and clear, the skies above Radiant Sky City shimmering with the glow of the Ascended Plane's unique energies. A thrumming excitement coursed through the streets as throngs of warriors, scholars, and spectators flocked to the Grand Arena.

Jiang Chen and Lei Qian made their way through the bustling crowd, their expressions calm but focused. The atmosphere was electric, and every face around them bore a mix of anticipation and ambition.

"The Grand Arena is even larger than I imagined," Lei Qian remarked, his gaze sweeping over the colossal structure. It rose into the sky like a crystalline mountain, its walls etched with ancient runes that pulsed faintly in rhythm with the city's energy.

"This isn't just a contest. It's a spectacle," Jiang Chen replied. "A chance for the powerful to show off and for the weak to be crushed."

Entering the Arena

Upon reaching the arena's gates, Jiang Chen and Lei Qian joined the line of contestants waiting to enter. Each participant was required to pass through a barrier that scanned their spiritual energy and verified their eligibility. As they stepped forward, the barrier hummed, and a voice resonated within their minds.

"Jiang Chen. Lei Qian. Approved."

Inside, the arena's grandeur was even more breathtaking. Tiered seating surrounded the central platform, which was divided into multiple sections, each designed for a different type of battle. Overhead, floating observation platforms held the city's elite, their auras radiating a sense of untouchable power.

A gong sounded, silencing the chatter of the crowd. High above the arena, a figure in flowing golden robes appeared, his presence commanding immediate respect. This was Lord Xian, one of Radiant Sky City's ruling elders and the overseer of the contest.

"Welcome, aspirants," Lord Xian began, his voice carrying effortlessly across the arena. "Today marks the beginning of the Celestial Contest, where only the strong shall prevail. Prove your worth, and you shall gain the right to ascend further. Fail, and you will be forgotten."

The First Round: A Test of Resilience

The first round was announced: a test of resilience. Contestants would be pitted against waves of spiritual constructs, each one designed to exploit their weaknesses.

Jiang Chen's group was ushered onto a platform that began to glow as the constructs materialized. The first wave consisted of humanoid figures made of shimmering energy, their movements unnervingly precise.

"Let's see what they've got," Jiang Chen said, stepping forward as one of the constructs lunged at him. He deflected its strike with ease, countering with a burst of energy that shattered it into fragments.

Lei Qian fought nearby, his spear a blur as he took down construct after construct. Despite the initial ease, the waves grew progressively more challenging. The constructs became faster, stronger, and more cunning, forcing the contestants to adapt quickly.

Jiang Chen's mind raced as he fought, analyzing the constructs' patterns. When a particularly massive construct appeared, wielding a sword of pure energy, he met it head-on. Their clash sent shockwaves rippling across the platform, but Jiang Chen's strategy and precision won out, and the construct fell.

When the final wave dissipated, only half of the contestants remained standing. Jiang Chen and Lei Qian exchanged a nod, their determination unwavering.

The Second Round: The Trial of Unity

For the second round, contestants were divided into teams and tasked with navigating a labyrinth filled with traps and guardians. Success required not only individual strength but also coordination and trust.

Jiang Chen and Lei Qian were paired with two other contestants: Mei Lan, a sharp-eyed archer with an air of quiet confidence, and Gao Wei, a burly fighter whose strength was matched only by his boisterous personality.

"We need to work together if we're going to get through this," Jiang Chen said as they entered the labyrinth. "Keep communication clear and don't act recklessly."

The group advanced cautiously, Mei Lan scouting ahead while Lei Qian and Gao Wei guarded the flanks. The labyrinth's traps were both physical and spiritual, ranging from spiked pits to illusions designed to sow confusion.

When a swarm of spectral beasts descended upon them, Gao Wei charged forward with a roar, smashing through their ranks. Mei Lan picked off the stragglers with pinpoint accuracy, while Jiang Chen and Lei Qian focused on protecting the group's rear.

At one point, they encountered a massive stone guardian blocking their path. Its runes glowed ominously as it came to life, swinging a colossal hammer. The team worked in unison, with Gao Wei drawing its attention while Mei Lan targeted its weak points. Jiang Chen and Lei Qian coordinated their attacks, eventually bringing the guardian down.

As they exited the labyrinth, exhausted but victorious, their teamwork had forged a bond of mutual respect.

A Brewing Rivalry

Back in the arena, the results of the second round were announced. Only a quarter of the original contestants remained. Among them was a figure Jiang Chen recognized: the scarred man who had challenged him in the marketplace.

The man's gaze met Jiang Chen's, his expression twisted with malice. "You won't make it past the next round," he hissed as he passed by.

Lei Qian placed a hand on Jiang Chen's shoulder. "Ignore him. We've got bigger things to focus on."

Jiang Chen nodded, though his eyes lingered on the man's retreating form. He could feel that this rivalry would come to a head sooner rather than later.

The Calm Before the Storm

As night fell, the contestants were given a brief reprieve to rest and prepare for the next day's challenges. Jiang Chen and Lei Qian returned to their quarters, where they reviewed what they'd learned so far.

"The contest is as much about strategy as it is about strength," Jiang Chen said. "We need to stay sharp and anticipate what's coming."

Lei Qian nodded. "And we can't afford to let our guard down. There are too many here who would love to see us fail."

As they settled in for the night, the distant roar of the crowd and the hum of the city's energy served as a constant reminder of the stakes. The Celestial Contest was far from over, and the challenges ahead would only grow more perilous.
