Chapter 20 - Book 2 chapter 9: Paths of the Obsidian Veil

The forest stretched on as Jiang Chen and Lei Qian moved through its dense undergrowth. The encounter with the Obsidian Veil lingered in the air like a storm cloud. Jiang Chen's mind churned with questions about the Forgotten Truths and the strange trial he had endured. Yet, he also felt an odd sense of exhilaration—as though a door had cracked open to a greater realm of possibility.

Lei Qian finally broke the silence, his voice subdued. "That was reckless."

Jiang Chen shot him a glance. "You think I should have walked away?"

Lei Qian sighed. "I think you're too quick to dive into the unknown. The Obsidian Veil isn't a sect you want to meddle with lightly. They're not just seekers of forbidden knowledge; they're manipulators of fate."

"Manipulators of fate," Jiang Chen repeated. "Exactly the kind of people I need to understand."

Lei Qian stopped, his expression grim. "You don't understand. They don't just observe fate—they twist it. People who get too close to them end up… changed. You might have passed their trial, but that doesn't mean you're free of their influence."

Jiang Chen paused, his eyes narrowing. "Good. Then they're exactly the kind of allies I need."

Lei Qian's frustration boiled over. "Allies? They're playing a game you can't even see yet. What makes you think you'll be the one pulling the strings?"

Jiang Chen smirked, his voice cold. "Because I don't let anyone else dictate my fate. Not them. Not you. Not anyone."

A Fork in the Path

Their argument faded into silence as the forest gave way to a winding mountain pass. The air grew colder, and the sky darkened with storm clouds. Ahead, the path split into two. One trail led upward into the jagged peaks, while the other descended into a shadowed valley.

Jiang Chen studied the paths, his instincts tugging him in both directions.

"The valley," Lei Qian said, breaking the silence. "It'll provide cover. The peaks are too exposed."

Jiang Chen's gaze lingered on the mountain path. "The peaks might be exposed, but they'll also give us a vantage point. We'll see any threats coming."

Lei Qian frowned. "And if those threats come from above? Or if the terrain traps us? Sometimes the higher ground isn't the safest."

"Sometimes it's the only way forward," Jiang Chen countered. He stepped toward the mountain trail, his decision made.

Lei Qian muttered under his breath but followed. "You're going to get us both killed, you know that?"

Jiang Chen didn't respond. His focus was already on the path ahead, the faint pulse of the fragment in his storage ring guiding his steps like a compass.

Whispers on the Wind

As they ascended, the storm grew more intense. Lightning flashed in the distance, illuminating the craggy terrain. Jiang Chen's senses were on high alert, his hand never straying far from his weapon. The air was heavy with a strange energy—a mixture of natural and unnatural forces.

Halfway up the trail, they encountered the remnants of a battle. Scorched earth, shattered weapons, and dried blood painted a grim picture. Jiang Chen knelt by a broken blade, his fingers brushing the hilt.

"This wasn't ordinary combat," he said. "The energy here… it's chaotic."

Lei Qian nodded, his expression grim. "Spiritual beasts. Powerful ones, by the looks of it. But this was no random attack. Someone drove them here."

"Or someone lured their enemies here to die," Jiang Chen added, rising to his feet. "Either way, we're not alone."

A rustling sound drew their attention. From the shadows emerged a figure cloaked in black, their face obscured by a mask. They carried no visible weapon, but the aura they exuded was suffocating.

"Travelers," the figure said, their voice calm yet menacing. "You walk a path fraught with peril. Turn back now, or face the consequences."

Jiang Chen stepped forward, his expression unflinching. "We've faced worse. Who are you to bar our path?"

The figure tilted their head. "A warning is all you'll get. The Obsidian Veil watches, and your steps tread too close to secrets that should remain buried."

Jiang Chen's eyes narrowed. "Then maybe those secrets are exactly what I'm looking for."

The figure's aura flared, and in an instant, they vanished, leaving only a faint echo of their presence. Lei Qian let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"What did I say about meddling with the Veil?" he muttered.

Jiang Chen ignored him, his focus on the trail ahead. "If they're trying to scare us off, it means we're on the right track."

Revelations in the Storm

By the time they reached the summit, the storm was in full force. Rain lashed against them, and the wind howled like a beast. But the view from the peak was worth it. Below them lay a sprawling valley, its center dominated by a massive structure—a fortress of black stone that seemed to absorb the light around it.

"The Obsidian Fortress," Lei Qian said, his voice barely audible over the wind. "The heart of the Veil."

Jiang Chen's eyes narrowed. "Then that's where we're going."

Lei Qian grabbed his arm. "You're insane! That place isn't just a stronghold. It's a labyrinth of traps and illusions. Even if we get in, we might never get out."

Jiang Chen pulled free, his expression resolute. "If the answers I seek are there, then it's worth the risk."

As they began their descent toward the valley, the storm seemed to intensify, as though the heavens themselves sought to bar their path. But Jiang Chen's determination burned brighter than ever. The Obsidian Veil had thrown down the gauntlet, and he intended to rise to the challenge.

Whatever awaited in the depths of the fortress, he would face it head-on. Fate was a chain, and Jiang Chen was ready to break it—one link at a time.
