Chapter 16 - Book 2 Chapter 5: Foundations of the Higher Plane

Jiang Chen stood on the edge of a floating island, gazing out at the expanse of the higher plane. The skies stretched endlessly, painted in hues of gold and violet, while celestial rivers shimmered with light that seemed alive. Each breath here felt richer, each heartbeat resonating with a newfound vigor.

The floating islands were interconnected by translucent bridges of energy, and upon some, structures of intricate design stood tall. Temples carved from crystal, pagodas shimmering with divine runes, and sprawling gardens radiating life—this realm was a marvel beyond imagination.

But Jiang Chen knew that beauty often masked danger. The Gate of Origin's trials had been but a precursor. The higher plane—a world of ascendants, ancient factions, and hidden threats—would challenge him in ways he could scarcely predict.

A gust of wind swept past, carrying a voice laced with power. "Newcomer, state your purpose."

Jiang Chen turned to find a figure descending from the sky. The man wore robes of deep blue, embroidered with stars that seemed to shift as he moved. His eyes glowed faintly, and a jade insignia hung from his belt, marking him as a member of the Azure Sky Sect.

"I seek my path," Jiang Chen replied, his tone steady. "I've come to break my limits and forge my own destiny."

The man's lips curled into a faint smile. "Bold words. Many ascend with similar ambitions, yet few survive their first year. The higher plane is not kind to wanderers. Do you bear the mark of a sect or faction?"

Jiang Chen shook his head. "I stand alone."

The man's expression shifted, a mix of respect and pity. "Then your journey will be fraught with peril. Still, your aura… it's unusual. The Gate's trials must have refined you. Perhaps there's hope for you yet."

Before Jiang Chen could respond, the man extended a hand. "Lei Qian of the Azure Sky Sect. I patrol this region to ensure new arrivals don't meet untimely ends. The realm's balance is delicate, and chaos often stirs near the Gate of Origin."

Jiang Chen clasped the offered hand, nodding. "Jiang Chen."

Lei Qian gestured toward the shimmering bridges. "Follow me. The Azure Sky Sect holds dominion over this region. I'll escort you to the Boundary Hall, where newcomers are registered and given guidance. From there, you'll decide your path."

The Boundary Hall

The Boundary Hall stood atop a sprawling island surrounded by cascading waterfalls of golden light. The building itself was a masterpiece, its walls inscribed with glyphs that pulsed rhythmically, as if breathing. Dozens of individuals moved within and around it, their robes bearing the insignias of various sects.

As Jiang Chen entered, he felt the weight of countless gazes. Some were curious, others dismissive, and a few openly hostile. It was clear that newcomers were seen as outsiders, potential threats or competitors.

A clerk approached, her demeanor efficient and brisk. She wore simple robes, but the aura she exuded spoke of her cultivation's depth. "Name and origin?" she asked, holding a jade tablet.

"Jiang Chen. My origin is of no relevance."

The clerk raised an eyebrow but said nothing, inscribing his name onto the tablet. A faint glow enveloped it before fading. "Your registration is complete. As an unaffiliated ascendant, you're entitled to basic resources and a temporary residence in the Outer Quarters. Should you wish to join a sect, opportunities will present themselves. Until then, tread carefully. The higher plane has little patience for the unaligned."

Lei Qian, who had observed the exchange, chuckled. "She's not wrong. Rival factions often prey on the unaffiliated. You'll need strength or allies to survive."

Jiang Chen's gaze hardened. "Strength, I can attain. As for allies… they will come if fate wills it."

Unwelcome Attention

That night, Jiang Chen settled into his temporary quarters, a modest room overlooking a tranquil garden. He meditated, refining his energy and acclimating to the realm's unique spiritual currents. The Heavenly Serpent's Core within him resonated strongly, its power more vibrant than ever.

But his peace was short-lived. A knock at his door drew his attention. Before he could respond, the door burst open, revealing three figures. They were young, their robes bearing the emblem of the Crimson Tide Sect, a faction known for its aggressive recruitment tactics.

"You're the unaffiliated newcomer," the leader said, his tone laced with arrogance. "The Crimson Tide Sect offers you a rare opportunity. Pledge your loyalty now, or suffer the consequences."

Jiang Chen rose slowly, his expression calm but his eyes sharp. "And if I refuse?"

The leader smirked. "Then we'll ensure you regret ascending."

The tension in the room was palpable. Jiang Chen's hand moved to the hilt of his sword. "You should leave. Now."

The leader laughed, but it was cut short as Jiang Chen unleashed a wave of golden energy, forcing the intruders back. The room shook as his aura surged, a mix of divine light and serpentine power.

The Crimson Tide disciples stumbled, their faces pale. The leader glared at Jiang Chen but knew better than to push further. "This isn't over," he spat, retreating with his companions.

As the door slammed shut, Jiang Chen exhaled, his gaze steely. The higher plane was proving to be as treacherous as he had expected. But he would not falter. His path was clear: rise above, no matter the cost.

The Path Ahead

The next morning, Jiang Chen stepped out into the bustling streets of the Boundary Hall's surrounding city. Merchants hawked rare artifacts, and cultivators traded techniques and information. The air buzzed with energy and ambition.

Lei Qian approached him, a knowing smile on his face. "I heard about last night. The Crimson Tide won't take your defiance lightly. You'll need to be cautious."

Jiang Chen nodded. "Let them come. I'll face whatever challenges they bring."

Lei Qian's smile widened. "Spoken like a true ascendant. Come, there's much for you to learn about this realm. Opportunities and dangers abound, but with the right guidance, you might just carve a path to greatness."

As Jiang Chen followed Lei Qian into the heart of the city, his resolve burned brighter than ever. The higher plane was vast and unforgiving, but it was also a land of endless possibilities. And Jiang Chen was determined to claim his place among its legends.
