Chapter 1 - waking up

The salt spray stings your face, the scent of brine and seaweed thick in the air. You gasp, sputtering seawater, your lungs burning. The rough, uneven surface beneath you is not rock, as you had expected. It's sand, warm and surprisingly soft against your cheek. You are lying on a beach, the turquoise water lapping gently at your feet. The sun, a blazing orb in a sky impossibly clear, beats down on your skin. Gone is the biting wind of the cliff face you remember clinging to, the cold terror of the unexpected fall. Instead, there's a strange… calmness. A sense of belonging, even.

You sit up, brushing the sand from your soaked clothes. The world around you is breathtakingly beautiful. Lush vegetation, a vibrant green unlike anything you've ever seen, climbs the slopes behind the beach, meeting a backdrop of imposing mountains that pierce the sky. Strange, flowering plants you don't recognize bloom everywhere, their colours vivid and intense. In the distance, you see glimpses of imposing structures, hinting at a civilization far beyond anything you could have imagined. The air hums with an almost palpable energy, a vibrant thrumming that resonates deep within your bones. You can feel it – the life force of this strange, new world pulsing around you. The very air seems to sing.

This isn't the world you know. You remember the dizzying plunge from the cliff, the cold grip of the ocean… but here, everything feels different. The magic, subtle yet undeniable, is woven into the fabric of existence. It flows around you, a river of energy you can almost taste. You reach out a hand, a tentative touch towards a nearby flowering bush. The plant shimmers, responding to your unspoken wish, as if understanding your intent. A gentle breeze rustles through its leaves, whispering secrets you feel but can't quite grasp. You know, instinctively, that this is no ordinary place. You've read about it, in that old, forgotten fantasy novel. The whispers of this world, the subtle magic, they're all familiar, strangely comforting.

Your familiar, Analamuk, a small, sleek black cat with eyes like molten gold, nuzzles your hand, a soft purr rumbling in its chest. It seems as unfazed by this new world as you are. It appears to sense the magic too, its tail twitching with a curious rhythm that matches the world's energy. You sense your own heightened magic, stronger than ever before. It is almost overwhelming.

You are Thalia, a woman now inexplicably stranded in a world you once only read about in a fantasy novel. Your knowledge of this world, its history, its politics, and its magic, is suddenly far more valuable than you could ever have imagined. You know of the High Empire, of the No Man's Land, and of the less developed lands struggling to attain power. You also know of Segird, the Prince of the High Empire, a man of immense power, and a figure of both legend and controversy. This world has accepted you, embraced you even, thanks to your previously useless knowledge of its lore. The feeling of belonging isn't just a comforting sensation; it is a profound connection. Yet, a shadow of unease lingers. The feeling of being watched, of a great power observing you, is hard to ignore. And then there's the matter of the upcoming harvest festival, a pivotal event in the High Empire… an event that promises to either solidify your place in this world or to throw you into its fiercest storms.

What do you do?
