Chapter 1 - Where It All Started

Spring.

A warm breeze crossed over a young man's face, his dark hair flowing in the same direction. The brown-skinned male looked up from his phone, watching the other students walkabout as normal. It was currently break time, and he was free from any schoolwork for a short time.

Lucas couldn't be called a main character. He couldn't even be called a side character, because, to him, he was none other than a background character.

Unnoticeable, no rememberable features, no important scenes, and hardly any dialogue.

"Fodder" As he would call it.

He lived a mediocre existence, but it wasn't as if he wanted the spotlight. In reality, he didn't mind being some background character. But he couldn't say he didn't find it quite frustrating that nobody knew him.

For example:

After getting injured during P.E. class, Lucas was quickly taken to the nurse's office.

Once inside, he was sat down and treated. Just next to him was another, they seemed to be under the weather rather than hurt.

Lucas recognized the person. They were fairly popular, had good looks, and were placed in the top 20 of students in grades.

Lucas bumped into the guy outside of school once, and they even laughed together for a few minutes, before the guy walked away like it never happened.

Lucas turned to him, still resting in bed after getting injured, and asked him why he was there.

"Hey, why are you here? Who would have thought we'd meet again, eh?"

Raising an eyebrow, the guy said:

"What do you mean? Who are you?"

His reality shattered, and he once again understood that he wasn't rememberable and that being a background character suited him better than anything else.

"N-Nevermind... Wrong person."

--

His break time was now over. He headed back to class to complete the rest of the gruesome school hours. Now sitting in class in his designated seat, he was eager to lay his head down.

He didn't sit by the window like some main character, awaiting the wind to pick up and allowing himself a graceful moment; no, he sat in the center of the room. Surrounded by everyone else, the unknown existence known as Lucas was quickly drowned out.

With a low sigh, he waited for class to start.

This was an average day. The sun was out, the grass was green, and yet his world was grey. Life was a loop to him, not one day out of the ordinary.

Wake up.

Eat.

School.

Sleep.

Repeat.

Lucas lived with his uncle. He never knew his parents, and his uncle never cared to talk about them, all he knew was this and only this. His uncle was a grumpy guy, he got angry at the smallest things, so Lucas never cared to interact with him, unless it had something to do with necessities.

This is all he has known, for 16 years of his life, this is how he has lived. And for now, this is how he will continue to live.

An ordinary day.

The sun was out.

The grass was green.

The breeze was warm.

Until it wasn't.

While in class, doing the usual, a small rumbling could be heard.

Then it got louder and gradually got louder.

Until the rumbling was there. The desk rattled, the doors shook, and everyone had fear struck into them in seconds.

"W-What's happening!?"

"It's an earthquake!"

"Get down under cover!"

Lucas snapped his head back and forth. A mix of confusion, fear, and determination swelled within him. He didn't want to move, but he also didn't want to be a sitting duck, waiting for something to happen. But he didn't want to panic, what if it's a short-form earthquake? The ones that last for a minute or two, but then he groaned.

'No... even those can be disastrous. It's also already been a minute..! And it's getting worse!'

His mind raced, he could tell from the looks in everyone's eyes that their minds too were racing. Half of the class was on the floor, burrowed underneath the desk, while some remained seated, a few bundled in the corner, and the rest ran out of the room.

The teacher saw the fear in everybody's eyes, she had never experienced an earthquake, but she knew she was responsible for everyone's safety. So she did the best she could to calm everyone down and have them take cover, from the potentially falling objects.

Just then, the lights fell, shattering into glass shards that sprawled across the floor, the concrete that held the school began cracking, screams being heard as it was seen. Some students ended up being hit by the shards of glass, and some looked up to see small concrete rocks falling.

Lucas couldn't sit still any longer; he knew the inevitable would eventually happen: a destroyed building.

He grabbed his bag and rushed out of the room. Students turned, seeing him quickly flee into the hallways. The teacher screamed after him, "Lucas! You need to stay!"

Lucas understood she was just as scared as everyone else, that even she was confused about what to do, but he didn't want to die like this, regardless of how he felt about life.

"I'm not gonna sit in there and let this place fall on me! You all can, but not me!"

The other students nodded, agreeing, they then got up and ran after him. Until there was only a handful left in the class, mostly those shaken in fear. The teacher swallowed her spit, "H-He was right! We need to get out of here, it's clear the shaking won't stop any time soon."

Listening to their superior, the rest of the students followed after her, until they stood outside—where nearly the entire school was.

Only a few had injuries, and luckily nobody was in critical need. Nobody was left behind, the teachers and staff let out a sigh of relief.

But the sighs of relief were short-lived. As then the shaking got incredibly worse, to the point nobody could remain standing up. The ground cracked, opening gaping holes into the earth, and the entire school crumbled into a pillar of rocks and dust, just behind them was the city they knew.

Now destroyed with fallen buildings, destroyed homes, and a dim atmosphere. Fires started, spreading quickly as the wind picked up. Area's flooded, from pipes and drains being ruined, to water towers being spilled.

Chaos ensued, as a thought lingered in everyone's mind.

'Is this the end of the world?'

With that single thought in mind, they rushed to scavenge. They gathered any water, any food, and any clothing they could find. Some took weapons, knives, and other things they thought they needed for survival.

Meanwhile, Lucas still stood at the entrance of the school.

He was confident in his thinking while in school, but now that he watched as everything around him turned to ruin, he became a coward.

Lucas quickly ran away, arriving at his home. Or at least the remains of it.

Now a hill of bricks, wood, and dust, he had no home. The entire neighborhood was just like his house: destroyed.

He fell to his knees, feeling helpless.

"Dammit... what am I gonna do now? I bet half the stores from here to a mile away have been seized."

Then, a loud ding was sounded.

But Lucas wasn't the only one to hear it.

All over the globe, it was heard.

In country after country, over multiple continents, their cities and homes too were destroyed.

And now, in front of everyone, a semi-transparent screen appeared.

And on that screen, were three cards.

The first was bronze, in the middle of silver, and the last was golden.

These cards were blank, only reflecting a slight shine of their color.

Lucas didn't understand what it meant, no, he didn't understand anything that was happening.

<40:59:59>

"A timer?... For what?"

No answer came, and the same choice remained.

"Well...the obvious choice is gold. Who would pick any of the other ones? Idiot I would assume."

Smirking at his remark, he began choosing.

Then a bloodcurdling scream sounded. Lucas quickly turned his head, looking to see where it was coming from.

"What the...?"

"WAIT! WHAT? NO! NO! I DIDN'T!"

He tried touching the screen, attempting to go back, but his choice was final.

"GAHHH! That damned person screaming! I wanted gold!"

"Eh..?"

Lucas slowly stopped having an expression, his "choice" dawning on him.

"Wait...so...so you're saying?.."

"No...No...NO! You can't do this to me! I-I didn't choose this!"

But his complaints were to no avail, as a final message came.

Everything faded to darkness, his surroundings began a void.

Lucas could feel tears welling at the corners of his eyes, "I-I'm dead. I'm so dead."

<00:25:58...>

<00:25:57...>

<00:25:56...>

"This...This is real. It's undoubtedly real. No matter what I do I won't wake up. Dammit! Dammit all! Why did that person have to scream like that?! Now I'm in hell difficulty! Who cares how great the rewards are? I'll die before I can even reach that point!"

Time slowly ticked down gradually.

And gradually, his heart pumped more and more.

He wasn't excited, he was terrified.

Just what waited beyond this waiting room? What will he see? What fantasy things will he face? He wasn't looking forward to it.

He would have rather picked the medium difficulty, no, easy if he could!

But now, only 10 minutes remained, and with each passing second, he could feel his stomach turning. He had to use the bathroom, but he was too scared to do that.

'How do they expect a loser like me to do this? This is unfair...'

Lucas started squeaking in a ball.

His surroundings were a stark white, everything was like a clean quartz room. A single bed was placed in the center of everything, it too was white.

Everything was driving him crazy, from the timer to the difficulty, to the room, and even himself!

All he could say was: "Why...Why..!"

<00:2:07>

<00:1:22>

"It's here..."

Lucas was still frozen, unsure of what to pick, unsure of anything.

"I feel like a prisoner already. And I'll die anyway, who cares?"

"...I expected it, my base stats are horrible. I'm the weakest partaking in the trials."

Everything faded, and when Lucas peered his eyes open he saw a dim-lit room. Old-looking stone ran into the shadows beyond the light. He heard clicking sounds, scraping sounds, it was a terrifying place.

And for a guy like him, it couldn't be worse. He had trash stats and was now in the hell of difficulty.

"So... this is how I die?"
