Chapter 26: Bonding with His Kid and Family

Simon's return brought a wave of joy and relief to his family. For the first time in years, they could enjoy uninterrupted time together without the looming shadow of war. Simon was determined to make the most of it, especially with his son, Alex, who was now eight months old and growing fast.

A Father's Love

Early one morning, Simon woke up to the sound of Alex babbling in his crib. Gigi was still asleep, so Simon tiptoed to the nursery. Seeing his son's big, curious eyes light up at the sight of him melted Simon's heart.

"Good morning, little man," Simon said, scooping Alex into his arms.

Alex giggled, grabbing at his father's dog tags. Simon chuckled and kissed the top of his son's head.

"Let's give Mommy a break and spend some time together, huh?"

Simon carried Alex downstairs, preparing a bottle for him while narrating every step. "You see this? Daddy's a pro now. They say I'm a major in the army, but I think being your dad is my most important job."

After feeding Alex, Simon placed him in a playpen and started doing push-ups nearby. Each time he lowered himself, he'd make a funny face at Alex, who responded with squeals of laughter.

Family Breakfast

By the time Gigi came downstairs, Simon was flipping pancakes, Alex sitting in a high chair nearby, waving a spatula.

"Morning, love," Gigi greeted, kissing Simon on the cheek.

"Good morning, beautiful," Simon replied, handing her a cup of coffee.

The family gathered around the table for breakfast. Simon's mother, Kris, and his sisters joined, each commenting on how much happier Simon seemed since returning home.

"Alex is lucky to have you as his dad," Kris said, smiling. "You've really stepped into this role beautifully."

Simon shrugged modestly, focusing on cutting Alex's pancake into tiny pieces. "He deserves the best, Mom. All of you do."

Family Outing

Later that day, Simon surprised everyone by planning a family outing to a nearby park. He packed a picnic basket, brought toys for Alex, and even included a football for a game with his siblings.

At the park, Simon was the center of attention. He helped Alex take his first wobbly steps on the grass, cheered loudly when his sisters joined the football game, and even got Kris to relax on a blanket with Gigi.

"You've changed, Simon," Kim said, catching her breath after the game. "You're softer now. In a good way."

Simon smirked, tossing the ball to her. "I've always been soft when it comes to family. You're just noticing now."

Storytime with Alex

That evening, Simon sat in the nursery with Alex on his lap, flipping through a picture book.

"This one's about a brave knight," Simon explained. "Just like your dad, huh?"

Alex babbled in response, pointing at the pictures. Simon smiled, his voice softening. "One day, I'll tell you all my stories, little man. But for now, let's stick to dragons and castles."

When Alex finally fell asleep, Simon stayed for a moment, watching him with a mix of awe and gratitude.

Late-Night Talk with Gigi

As Simon climbed into bed, Gigi leaned against him, her hand resting on his chest.

"You've been incredible since you got back," she said. "I can see how much you're trying to be present, and it means the world to us."

Simon kissed her forehead. "I missed too much already. I'm not letting anything take me away from you and Alex again. This is where I belong."

A Day Well Spent

The day ended with the family gathered around the living room, laughing and sharing stories. Simon felt a deep sense of peace he hadn't experienced in years.

For the first time in a long time, life felt complete.
