Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 pt.1 The Beginning

"I've always had this same dream since I was 9, I'm alone in a dark forest it's dark and fog creeps along the ground as though it's alive". I'm only in my sweatpants and a t-shirt, but I know that something is off about these woods the trees circle around me and a almost suffocating feeling emits from my lungs as I look at them as though the tree are leeching the life from my body". I wander trying to get home but it seems as though I'm only descending deeper into the woods".Panic starts to creep in until I'm alerted to rustling in a nearby bush, I turn to see a pair of warm brown eyes looking back at me I stiffen as the unknown creature comes into view and to my relief it's just a fox". "The striking animal had gorgeous ginger fur and brown paws and a white belly but it's most enchanting trait was it's chocolate brown eyes which seemed to have a human feel to them, I stared at the animal feeling a surge of calmness wash over me the fox started to walk but turned to me swishing it's bushy tail as if to signal to me to follow it, I start to run after the animal hoping it will lead me home"."As I get closer it always seems to be out of reach which hurts my heart for some bizarre reason , just as I'm about to touch it's gorgeous tail a car horn blares jolting me from my sleep","holy... God why... I whine, "Akihito? My mom asks ,"are you alright dear"? " Yeah ma", I answer back rubbing sleep from my eyes. "I look around we're still in the airport at Tokyo waiting for a rental car to take us to the station to get us to our actual destination Kyoto."I stretch and yawn as my mother sits next to me on the bench". "My name is Shima Akihito I was originally from Tokyo until my parents moved me and themselves to the states, I was only 2 at the time of the move but I remember the the side affects of it, while my father was hard working and loving he believed our future would be better in the states and as such he came to blows with my grandpa over it who believed we should put our roots where our ancestors laid them." My mother and gran always played the mediators between them when they were in arguments, but ultimately dad moved us, Gran gave her blessing but Gramps unfortunately grew distant from dad and as such they both didn't speak for years, when we settled in America dad opened a Japanese restaurant and used our family recipes as a peace offering hoping grandpa would be proud which he was but he still believed we should come back, 15 years ago on the way to opening the restaurant dad was killed in a hit and run dealt on another business across the street mom and I were devastated, while mom shed tears I couldn't I just felt a all consuming void a desire for the people responsible to get what ever divine punishment they deserve for taking my Papa and my Mother's partner from her." I shake my head as tears threatened to surface, I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see my mother with Japanese sweets I smiled I haven't had these in a long time, dad would always get them for me growing up and we would watch anime while eating them, these were fond memories. As we sat munching all i could think of was dad and it brought joy and sadness, before we new it a kind older gentleman approached us to say our rental car was ready as we loaded up I bade Tokyo farewell for the time being and we got in the car to head to Kyoto."It's quite lovely here isn't it? My mother asks, and I nod in response it truly is kinda sucks I don't remember much." My mom chuckled before turning on the GPS so we could drive to Grans place i plug my headphones in to listen to music while we drive, I'll be honest I'm excited to see Gran she would tell me stories about my parents as teenagers and it was cute hearing all the embarrassing gossip." As we drove along i stared out the windows and looked at all the beautiful greenery, it truly was lovely here, if I didn't have to start sophomore year in two weeks it would feel like we're on vacation, as we near closer to Kyoto the sprawling city sites disappear and more country charm takes it's place eventually The village town Gran lives in comes into view, all the houses are traditional Japanese wood exterior with almost helmet shaped roofs as we pull up Gran is already waving to us from the driveway , we get out the car and my Mother's kisses her on the cheek," Mother it's so good to see you", it's good to see you to dear,I hope the trip was easy as I approach forward my grandmother's expression brightens even more, " My little Hito!, she exclaims giving me a hug her head comes to just about my chest, "Hi gran I've missed you, my grandmother hurries us inside and puts tea on the stove to boil, as she shows us to our rooms I'm given my dad's old room I was deeply touched by this".I was left alone to unpack and get settled, I lay on the bed to clear my thoughts as I put clothes in my dresser and stack my bathroom items in my personal bathroom I look out the windows to see the sky changing to afternoon." As we get ready for dinner we drink tea and catch up it's been a few years since Grandpa passed and we ultimately decided to move back here to give Gran a hand since she has been slowing down." Gran had made tempura and my mouth watered at the scent of it after eaten we all visited the family shrine in the the lounge area of the house and placed dad's urn next to Grandpa's as I lit a candle for both of them I recited a Shinto prayer for both of them that has been practiced by our family for generations." As I decided to turn in for the night I kissed mom on the cheek and Gran on the forehead and went to bed as I get settled i look out the windows and see the moon is full I can't help but be enamored by how beautiful it looks with the final thoughts I drift to sleep.
