[The Story of the Boy Who Became a Wanted Hero Because of a Spider Bite ~ Chapter One ~ A Bite (1/2)]
---
In the heart of Saikono City, where the symphony of horns dominated the streets, a chaotic melody played out. The sound of car horns blared incessantly, creating an overwhelming cacophony that grated on the nerves of everyone within earshot. The traffic jam was a daily occurrence, a testament to the city's unique brand of chaos.
The streets were lined with cars, their drivers honking furiously, their heads protruding from windows like angry birds, shouting at the source of their frustration. Yet, amidst this turmoil, there was a lone figure walking calmly along the gray sidewalk, oblivious to the madness around him.
The sidewalk, bordered by the red brick walls of imposing houses, was deserted, save for this boy. He was an anomaly in this sea of chaos, a stark contrast to the world he navigated. His soft, light brown hair fell neatly over his forehead, framing his light brown eyes, which peered through glasses that matched the color of his irises. His skin was pale, and his height, at one meter and fifty-five centimeters, was slightly below average for his age.
In his hand, he clutched a small notebook, its cover worn from constant use. He muttered to himself, repeating the same phrase over and over, as if memorizing a mantra:
"Hello, I am Kyouta, I was born without a supernatural ability, I hope I get along with you... Hello, I am Kyouta, I was born without a supernatural ability, I hope I get along with you..."
His voice was barely audible, lost in the din of the city, yet he continued, his steps steady and unwavering. He walked past a scene that would have sent shivers down the spine of any ordinary person—a battle between professional heroes and villains. Four heroes, their powers on full display, were engaged in a fierce fight with two villains. One pair of heroes squared off against a villain on the street, while another pair faced off on the sidewalk, mere meters away from the boy.
The villains were formidable, their powers unleashed with reckless abandon, yet Kyouta paid them no mind. He walked through the battlefield as if it were a peaceful park, his focus solely on the words he repeated in his mind. The villain, momentarily distracted, watched the boy pass by, a look of puzzlement crossing his face. It was as if the boy existed in a different reality, one where the battles of heroes and villains were mere background noise.
And yet, in this strange and chaotic world, no one seemed to take notice of him. The drivers, more concerned with the traffic jam than the battle raging before them, barely acknowledged his presence. It was as if Kyouta were invisible, a ghost drifting through a world that didn't quite understand him.
Forty-five minutes later, the scene shifted to Taina Middle School, where Kyouta stood in front of a classroom filled with more than twenty students. The teacher, a middle-aged man with a stern expression, stood beside him, his voice calm and measured.
"Okay, Kyouta-kun, I'm glad you'll be joining my students starting from today. Can you first introduce yourself to the students to make it easier for them to communicate with you?"
Kyouta's heart pounded in his chest as he faced the class. He had rehearsed his introduction countless times that morning, yet now, standing before his peers, his mind went blank. He took a deep breath, recalling the words he had memorized.
"I am Kyouta Sakayanagi, a boy born helpless in a world filled with supernatural powers. I know I'm not the only one in this world who doesn't have a supernatural ability, but really, I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me. I would like to get along with you guys."
His voice trembled slightly as he finished, and he closed his eyes, bracing himself for the inevitable reaction. The silence that followed was deafening, the students' expressions blank, as if they were watching a boring movie. Kyouta's heart sank as he realized that, once again, he had failed to connect with those around him.
The teacher, sensing the tension, placed a reassuring hand on Kyouta's back. "You can sit in the empty seat in the back," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.
Kyouta nodded, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He had hoped, for once, that things would be different, that he would be accepted for who he was. But in Saikono City, where supernatural abilities were the norm, being "helpless" was a stigma that was hard to shake.
As Kyouta made his way to the back of the classroom, he couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. He had transferred to three different schools in the same year, each time hoping for a fresh start, only to be met with the same indifference, the same curiosity about his lack of powers. And with only four months left until the end of the school year, he knew that this would be his reality for a while longer.
The journey ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: in a world where everyone had something extraordinary, Kyouta Sakayanagi was determined to find his place, no matter how difficult it might be.
