When Mr. Abram entered the classroom with a student trailing behind him, the lively chatter and occasional bursts of laughter came to an immediate stop. It was as if the entire room held its breath in unison, their attention zeroing in on the girl standing beside him.
Clearing his throat, Mr. Abram addressed the class. "I'd like to introduce you all to a new student," he began, his tone calm yet authoritative. Turning slightly toward her, he gave an encouraging nod. "Go ahead and introduce yourself."
The girl hesitated for a moment, her posture stiff as she fidgeted with the hem of her uniform. Finally, she raised her head just enough to speak. "Hi, I'm Alena," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm looking forward to this class."
Her words were simple, but her nervousness hung in the air like a fragile thread. That was when she felt it—a pair of eyes watching her with an intensity that made her skin tingle. Glancing up cautiously, her gaze met his.
He sat at the back, his chair tilted slightly, his green eyes piercing through the space between them like arrows. His dark hair fell messily over his forehead, adding to the air of nonchalance that surrounded him. The faint smirk playing on his lips made her stomach twist, and for a moment, everything else faded away.
Alena's heart pounded as she struggled to look away, but his gaze seemed to hold her captive. The rest of the room ceased to exist—there was only him. Finally, she broke the connection, staring at the floor as her cheeks flushed crimson.
Throughout the lecture, her mind betrayed her resolve, pulling her thoughts back to him. Every now and then, she stole a glance in his direction, but he didn't seem to notice—or maybe he did. Either way, she felt drawn to him in a way that both intrigued and unsettled her.
"I need to focus," she whispered under her breath, gripping her pen tighter.
Just as she managed to redirect her attention, a familiar voice called out behind her. "Hey, Alena!"
Turning, she was met with Lexy's mischievous grin. "Let's grab a snack at the café," he suggested, already heading toward the door.
At first, Alena hesitated. "It's too much, Lexy," she protested as they walked together. "The school provides free food; why waste money on snacks?"
But Lexy was adamant, brushing off her concerns with a wave of his hand. "Come on, you've got to try the biscuits here. You won't regret it."
Reluctantly, she followed him, and soon they found themselves in a cozy corner of the café. As Lexy unwrapped the snacks, Alena noticed the curious glances of other students. Whispers and murmurs filled the room, and she felt a prickling unease.
"Why is everyone staring at us?" she asked, her voice low.
Lexy glanced around casually, then shrugged. "They're just surprised, that's all. Probably not used to seeing me hang out with someone so cute." He winked, and Alena rolled her eyes, though her cheeks burned.
She reached for the biscuit he offered but stopped when he brought it to her mouth instead. "Here," he said with a teasing grin.
"Lexy," she scolded, grabbing the biscuit from his hand. "I can feed myself, thank you very much. And you're attracting way too much attention!"
Lexy laughed but said nothing, clearly enjoying her flustered reaction. As they ate, Alena found herself relaxing, grateful for his lightheartedness.
By the time they returned to class, the tension she'd felt earlier had eased—until her eyes drifted back to the boy with the green eyes. He was leaning forward now, his elbows resting on the desk, his gaze fixed on her once more.
Her pulse quickened, but she forced herself to look away, focusing on the lecturer's words instead.
When the class finally ended, Alena gathered her things and prepared to leave. But as she walked toward the door, a tall girl stepped in front of her, blocking her path.
"Hi," the girl said, her voice confident and friendly. "I'm Emma."
Alena blinked, startled by the sudden introduction. "Oh, um, hi. I'm Alena."
Emma extended her hand, her smile widening. "I think we should be friends. What do you think?"
The directness of her words caught Alena off guard, but she nodded slowly. "Sure… no problem."
"Great!" Emma said, pulling her into a quick hug before turning on her heel and walking away, leaving Alena speechless.
Shaking her head, Alena hurried to find Lexy, who was waiting for her near the entrance. "Sorry to keep you waiting," she said, slightly out of breath.
Lexy smiled, his blue eyes warm. "It's fine. Just don't make it a habit."
He walked her to the girls' dormitory, and as she watched him drive away, her thoughts drifted back to the boy in the classroom. His green eyes haunted her, refusing to leave her mind.
"Maybe a shower will help," she muttered, heading to the bathroom.
But even under the stream of water, she couldn't escape him. His gaze, his smirk, his very presence seemed to follow her everywhere.
"This is ridiculous," she whispered, rubbing her temples.
A sudden knock at the door startled her, breaking her reverie. She grabbed a towel and called out, "I'm coming!"
But when the doorknob began to twist, her breath caught in her throat.
