Chapter 7 - Testing Boundaries

Qingxue woke the next morning with a plan forming in her mind. It wasn't enough to sit back and wait for Yanran's moves—she needed to assert herself. But her approach had to be subtle, calculated, and unassailable.

At breakfast, she found herself seated across from Yanran. The elder Xu daughter was effortlessly composed, sipping her tea with the grace of someone who had mastered the art of being observed.

"Sister," Yanran began, her tone sweet, "Mother mentioned you'd be meeting with some of the social circle ladies soon. It's quite an adjustment to step into their world. If you need tips on etiquette or conversation, I'd be happy to help."

Qingxue smiled politely, setting down her chopsticks. "That's kind of you, Yanran, but I think I'll manage. I may not have had the same experiences as you, but I learn quickly."

Yanran's smile didn't falter, but Qingxue caught the brief flicker of irritation in her eyes. "Of course. I'm sure you'll do wonderfully."

Later that day, Qingxue sought out Xu Zhaoyang in his study. It was a space dominated by dark wood, leather furniture, and towering bookshelves—a clear reflection of the family patriarch's authority.

"Father," she began, stepping inside, "may I have a moment of your time?"

He looked up from his desk, setting aside a stack of documents. "Qingxue, come in. What's on your mind?"

She approached cautiously, her heart pounding. "I've been thinking about how I can contribute to the family. I know I have a lot to learn, but I'd like to get involved with the company."

Xu Zhaoyang's expression shifted to one of surprise, followed by approval. "That's a bold request. Are you sure you're ready for such a responsibility?"

"I'm ready to learn," Qingxue said earnestly. "I know I don't have the experience yet, but I want to prove that I belong here—not just as your daughter, but as someone who can contribute meaningfully."

Zhaoyang studied her for a moment before nodding. "Very well. I'll assign you a position in one of our subsidiary departments. It will be a starting point, nothing too critical, but it will give you a chance to learn and observe how the company operates. How does that sound?"

Qingxue's heart lifted. "Thank you, Father. I won't let you down."

Zhaoyang gave her a small smile, a rare show of warmth. "I expect you to work hard and not take shortcuts. It won't be easy, Qingxue, but if you're willing to put in the effort, I believe you'll do well."

The news of Qingxue's request quickly spread throughout the household, and by the time she returned to her room, she already felt the weight of her decision. As expected, Yanran wasn't pleased.

That evening, Yanran appeared at Qingxue's door, her usual pleasant demeanor in place, but her smile didn't quite reach her eyes.

"I heard you spoke to Father about joining the company," Yanran said, stepping inside uninvited.

Qingxue closed the book she'd been reading and set it aside. "Yes, I did. I think it's a good opportunity for me to contribute."

Yanran tilted her head, feigning curiosity. "Don't you think it's a bit… early for that? You're still adjusting to life here, and the corporate world can be overwhelming, even for someone with experience."

"I'm aware of the challenges," Qingxue replied calmly. "That's why I want to start now. The sooner I begin, the sooner I can learn."

Yanran's smile wavered for a fraction of a second. "Of course. Just be careful, sister. It's easy to make mistakes when you rush into things."

Qingxue met her gaze evenly. "Thank you for your concern, Yanran. I'll keep that in mind."

Yanran lingered for a moment before leaving, her composure intact but her frustration palpable.

The next morning, Qingxue arrived at the subsidiary office where she had been assigned. The building was sleek and modern, a stark contrast to the traditional elegance of the Xu estate. As she stepped inside, she was greeted by a young assistant who introduced herself as Lin Yi.

"Miss Xu, welcome," Lin Yi said with a warm smile. "Mr. Xu has instructed me to show you around and help you settle in."

"Thank you," Qingxue replied, grateful for the kindness.

As they toured the office, Qingxue took in the bustling environment—employees hurrying to meetings, stacks of reports being reviewed, and the hum of conversation filling the air. It was intimidating but also exhilarating.

Lin Yi stopped by a desk near the corner of the office. "This will be your workstation for now. You'll primarily be observing and assisting with small tasks. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me."

Qingxue nodded, her resolve strengthening. She was determined to prove herself, not just to her family but to herself as well.

Later that day, as she familiarized herself with her new environment, she noticed a group of employees whispering nearby. When she approached, they quickly fell silent, their eyes darting away.

It didn't take long for her to realize why. Being the real daughter of the Xu family came with a reputation, one she hadn't yet earned. Some people looked at her with curiosity, others with skepticism.

But Qingxue reminded herself of Tianhao's words: "Don't let them intimidate you. You've got more spine than most people here."

As she sat at her desk, reviewing a stack of documents, she made a silent promise to herself: she would prove her worth, no matter how many obstacles were placed in her path.
