Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: A Horrifying Discovery

As the first rays of dawn began to flood the forest, everything was emitted in a pale light, dew drops glistened like rubies. Elara never grows tired of breathing in the perfume of clear pine and muddy earth, the air being icy bringing an absolute fine sensation. Gone is the idea of the day being monotonous, as the birds belt out their sweet tune making the enchanting woods come alive.

Leading the way, in his armor Kael was displaying the mark of an experienced warrior with years of combat experience written on his face. Against her broad build Elara appeared tender, the pair dynamic is quite unique with years of combat experience enrolled with a novice magic user, she was eager to prove her magic skills while simultaneously being infatuated with the sorcerer so she trailed closely behind, gradually drawing in closer to him. They were brushing aside foliage in hopes to traverse into a part of the forest which have even scarcely seen by people, marking the furthest the pair has gone before.

As they trekked into the heart of the forest, the stir of leaves, the chorus of birdsong and the sound of forest animals, appeared like a symphony to accompany their movement. It was clear Kael's instincts were heightened as his experience told him there is a potential threat behind every tree and bush. In contrast, Elara was beset with curiosity by every new sight and sound, as she was simply enchanted by this new setting.

Before long, they found themselves in a tiny cove where the first daylight flickered between the boughs and warmed the soil. At the center of this cove was an object, buried halfway in dirt in the middle of the cove. The object in question was glowing faintly, its pulse illuminating the surroundings with many shades of green. Never before had they set their eyes on something like this. It was an ancient artifact.

"Elara, you need to tread carefully. This object has tremendous power, and power always comes with great risk," Kael said solemnly before looking directly at her.

Elara's curiosity regarding the artifact was peaking which made her step closer to the artifact and ask Kael, "I have never seen anything like it. What is it?" Kael spoke to her while observing the artifact with his hand sort of touching it, "I am not entirely sure what we are dealing with but we have to be cautious. There are individuals who would want to use this for their own purposes." As they began to look upon the artifact, out of nowhere a wizard began to attack with the intent of killing them. Their leader - the burly individual standing tall in the dark robe began sneering.

The forest once again had an overbearing presence with the still air shadowing the unnatural birdsong that continued for a while. The uncanny silence that surrounded all of them aided only in portraying the sense of wrong that was building up in their gut. Just then a bizarre sight began to form, rogue sorcerers had started appearing out of thin air where Elara and Kael were standing, further unsettling the atmosphere.

"There's no way you can get an artifact," the leader said with an uncompromising tone that became increasingly admonitory as he finished his statement.

"We aren't handing over anything," Kael said while pulling out his sword and standing his ground, "So you better leave now or stay here and curse yourself."

The battlefield was once a serene clearing, but now, it was a horrid mess. Elara and Kael had a luminous read of the sky while their enemies summoned a plethora of spells at them. Kael was cutting down adversaries while Elara was erecting magical barriers and blasting them with bursts of energy. Sure, she wasn't as experienced as Kael, but she held her ground.

Kael was blown away and a spell reverberated in the air, which left Elara petrified. Seeing her mentor fall sent an immense wave of fury in Elara and she was certain of one thing she would do anything to protect Kael and the artifact.

With all the resolve she could comprehend, she shouted "Kael you better stay strong because I will fight with the last breath in my lungs to protect it."

Elara's dogged pursuit of remaining effervesced forces off spurred up her to use the energy of the artifact to cast a protective shield around them thus staving off her assailants. As the last of the sorcerers fled into the forest, Elara rushed to Kael's side, her hands trembling.

"Are you ok, Kael?" She asked in a gentle voice as she struggled to hide her worry.

Kael grimaced as he raised his body, seemingly in pain. "I will be fine Elara, you acted well, now we have to protect the artifact and further investigate it."

The artifact they had acquired had a lot of secrets to it and had been in possession of them for a short time. Kael and Elara came to realize that it was only the beginning. They had to protect the artifact from falling into the wrong hands by understanding its nature and what it was capable of.

The relic was from the remains of a civilization that was both advanced in magic and technologically advanced. It is said that the artifact had the means to alter time, but such power had to be paid for. There are stories of an underground civilization which operated with such artifacts attempting to seize the world only to be defeated due to their greed.

Kael said with authority and firmness when he spoke, "We have to tread lightly. This artifact is far stronger than we ever hoped to have it. There are people who would go to an unmatched extent trying to retrieve this."

Elara inquired resolutely, "Then what do you suppose we do next, Kael?"

"We must go out and try to find the Arcane Council. They might have information regarding this artifact and its history. However, we need to be on guard. The renegade mages will not be the sole individuals pursuing it," Kael said.

Elara impressed Kael throughout their journey, be it with her courage or the ability to think on her feet, she made a captivating apprentice who started to show signs of growth as a powerful warrior ready to become a leader. Following that, Elara started to have a newfound trust in herself and her ability to wield heavy power. They both on the other hand, started to view Kael in a different light, not just a mentor, but a friend and a partner they could rely on.

The chapter was filled with explosive combat scenes, magical battles and an intense chase through the woods that had everyone at the edge of their seats. Fighting to defend the artifact was not an easy task and fire and magic was required to execute the mission. The chapter came to a suspenseful end as Kael and Elara were teleported to an unknown area through an artifact that attracted otherworldly force.

In a radius of a bright light that sparked to life, the artifact gave off an unimaginable amount of energy. When the glow dimmed down, they woke up in a mysterious and ancient ruin that was not where they originally were. The artifact had drained itself and lay motionless but gave the two a fiery sense of adventure as they were in an unfamiliar place with no clue on how to get back.

"W – where exactly are we, Kael?" Elara's voice bore the conscious blend of fear and deep admiration.

"I cannot ascertain where we are, but it seems necessary to find it out. There are mysteries hiding in this location, and we need to delve into them if we expect to fathom what the relic is capable of," Kael's voice was unyielding despite everything, even in light of the uncertainty.

The chapter depicted the elements of growth and responsibility, focusing on how the two characters developed during the crises. It stressed the need to be aware of the repercussions of one's deeds, in addition to the process of becoming a better person that accompanies every evil.
