Chapter 15 - Chapter Fifteen: The First Business Venture

The cool winter air carried a quiet buzz of determination as James and Tommy unloaded the first vending machine from the back of their father's truck. It was a bulky, heavy piece of equipment, but to James, it represented the start of something bigger—a tangible step toward his future.

Tommy wiped his brow and looked at his younger brother with a smirk. "You better hope this thing makes some real money, kid. I'm not breaking my back for nothing."

"It will," James replied confidently. "We've got the perfect location. The community center is busy every day—kids, parents, sports teams. It's the ideal spot."

Tommy chuckled and shook his head. "You've got a big brain for this stuff, I'll give you that. But I'm still charging you for labor."

"Deal," James said with a grin, and they both laughed.

Finding the Right Locations

Setting up a vending machine wasn't as simple as James had imagined. It required not just the machine itself, but also negotiating space, permissions, and contracts. The community center had been his first target, and after a polite yet firm negotiation with the manager, James secured a prime spot near the basketball courts for a small monthly fee.

The second location, however, proved more challenging. James had his eyes on a local high school, where students swarmed the hallways and lingered after class. But convincing the school principal to allow a vending machine wasn't easy.

"Mr. Robinson," James said, sitting across from the principal in his modest office. "I can promise the students will appreciate having snacks and drinks available. Plus, I'll ensure the machine is always stocked, and a percentage of the profits will go toward school programs."

Mr. Robinson leaned back in his chair, studying James carefully. "You're very persuasive for a sixteen-year-old," he said, finally. "All right, we'll try it for a trial period. But if I hear one complaint, the machine goes."

James nodded eagerly. "Thank you, sir. You won't regret it."

Building the Business

With the machines in place, James spent the next few weeks managing inventory and troubleshooting any issues. He quickly learned that vending machines were more work than he had initially thought. Drinks occasionally jammed, candy bars needed to be replaced with fresh stock, and there was always the challenge of balancing prices to keep both customers and profits happy.

Tommy was a big help, offering practical advice and occasionally stepping in to assist with restocking. "You're running this like a pro," Tommy said one evening as they loaded crates of soda into the truck. "Dad would be proud, you know."

James smiled. "I hope so. This is just the beginning, though. I want to grow this into something bigger."

Moments with Lily

Between managing his new business and keeping up with school, James still made time for Lily. She had been a steady source of encouragement, always curious about his progress and offering her support.

One Friday afternoon, they sat on a bench in the park, the cool breeze rustling the trees around them. James had brought her one of the chocolate bars from his vending machine, and she unwrapped it slowly, smiling at him.

"How's it going with the machines?" she asked, biting into the bar.

"Better than I expected," James said. "The community center machine is doing great, and the school one's picking up. But it's a lot of work."

"I can tell," Lily said, her tone gentle. "You've been a little distracted lately. Not that I blame you—you've got a lot on your plate."

James looked at her, his expression softening. "I'm sorry if I've been distant. I just… I have so many plans, and sometimes it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day."

Lily reached over and placed a hand on his. "I get it, James. I really do. But don't forget to live a little, too. You're sixteen—you don't have to solve the world's problems just yet."

Her words stayed with him as they walked back to her house, the streetlights flickering on one by one.

Looking Ahead

That night, James sat at his desk, reflecting on the day. His business was off to a solid start, thanks to his careful planning and the help of those around him. But Lily's words echoed in his mind.

He opened her notebook and wrote a single line at the top of the page: Balance is the key to everything.

James leaned back in his chair, letting the thought sink in. His ambitions were as strong as ever, but he realized he needed to cherish the moments in between—the laughter with Tommy, the quiet talks with Lily, and even the challenges of running a business.

The path to success wasn't just about reaching the destination. It was about the journey, too.
