Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Quiet Before the Chaos

Aria strolled through the busy pack house. She radiated warmth and stability. Pack members grinned and said hello as she walked by. Their nods and waves showed how much they respected and cared for her.

"Luna Aria!" yelled young Liam one of the newer wolves in the pack. He trained with a group of others. "Check this out! My shifting skills have improved!"

Aria grinned at his eagerness. "I noticed that Liam. Keep it up. Remember, you get better with practice."

Liam glowed, his chest swelling with pride. "I will, Luna! I swear!"

As Aria walked on, she felt proud of her pack. They had become strong under her and Damon's guidance, and she treasured the unity they shared. Her eyes softened when she saw Damon near the pack house entrance, in conversation with some warriors. The sight of him always comforted her, but today, something seemed different.

She walked up to him, her heart raced with affection as she said his name. "Damon."

He looked at her, a slight grin on his face, but his eyes seemed far away. "Aria," he said, his voice warm yet unfocused.

"How's it going?" she asked taking his hand.

Damon paused before he answered. "Hectic. I have a lot to deal with right now."

Aria's smile weakened a bit. "I can lend a hand if you want. We're partners, right?"

Damon's smile tightened. "I know, Aria. But some things... I need to tackle by myself."

She nodded but worry started to fill her heart. "Okay, but if you need me, I'm here."

"Sure," he answered, but his eyes already drifted away, his mind elsewhere.

As the day progressed, Aria couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Damon's aloofness was subtle, yet it left a growing worry in her stomach. She tried to concentrate on her tasks talking with pack members and watching over the training, but the sense of worry stayed casting a cloud over her cheerful day.

Aria made her way to Damon's office in the late afternoon. She wanted to talk with him about some choices for the upcoming full moon ceremony.

As she got close to the office, she heard talking Damon and someone else. She stopped knowing the other voice belonged to Selena, her best friend and closest confidant.

"She can't know about this yet," Damon said in a quiet but strong voice.

Aria's heart jumped. Know about what? She put her ear near the door, her heart beating faster.

"Don't worry," Selena answered sounding just as serious. "We'll take care of it. But we need to watch our step."

Aria's thoughts jumbled. What conversation did they have? And why did they keep her in the dark? She rapped on the door trying to seem casual.

The talking ceased. After a moment, Damon pulled the door open, his face giving nothing away. "Aria," he said, his tone betraying a bit of shock. "I didn't notice your approach."

"I didn't intend to disrupt," Aria said putting on a grin. "I just wanted to discuss the full moon ritual."

"No problem," Damon answered moving to allow her entry. "We had almost wrapped up."

Selena emerged from behind the desk. Her smile appeared forced, and she avoided eye contact with Aria. "Luna," she said in an official tone. "We had a discussion about pack business."

"Should I know anything?" Aria asked aiming to sound casual.

"Nothing crucial," Damon replied. "Just everyday concerns."

Aria nodded, but her worry grew. The room felt tense, and she sensed they withheld information from her. She chose not to dig deeper, yet doubt lingered in her mind refusing to fade.

Once Aria left the office, she felt deep down that something was off. She needed advice from someone she trusted. She decided to visit Elder Malachai's rooms. The old wolf had guided her since she became Luna, and his insights always brought her peace.

"Elder Malachai," Aria said bowing when she saw him in the library. "Can we talk?"

The elder looked up from the old book he read, his eyes kind and open. "Sure, Luna. What's on your mind?"

Aria paused trying to find the right words. "I... I've seen some changes in Damon and Selena. They're hiding things from me, and I can't get rid of the feeling that something's not right."

Malachai listened looking thoughtful. "The connection between mates is powerful, but even the strongest connections can face challenges. Trust your gut Aria. If something seems off, it is. But watch out. Don't do anything until you know all the facts."

Aria nodded appreciating his advice. "Thanks, Elder. I'll be careful."

In the following days, Aria felt more and more uneasy. She noticed a change in Selena's actions. Her once best friend now seemed far away almost icy. They no longer shared easy laughs. Instead, they had awkward quiet moments and short brief talks.

"Selena," Aria said one morning as they got ready for a council meeting, "are you okay? You've been acting... strange."

Selena looked up from her paper review. "I'm okay, Aria. Just busy with all the pack duties."

Aria scowled, unconvinced. "There's more to it. You've kept your distance. We used to share everything."

Selena lifted her eyes to meet Aria's, but her stare was cold. "People grow, Aria. We're adults now. We have duties."

Aria felt shocked by the edge in her tone. "I get that, but our friendship still stands. At least, I believed it did."

"Friends," Selena echoed, as if the term sounded strange to her. She exhaled massaging her forehead. "Listen, I've had a lot to think about. I didn't intend to shut you out."

Aria wanted to trust her, but Selena's icy stare revealed something else. She tried to push it aside, to tell herself she was reading too much into it, but the uncertainty lingered.

At the same time, Damon became harder to reach. He spent more time away from the pack house often leaving without telling Aria his destination. When she asked him about it, he dismissed her with unclear responses claiming it was pack related.

One evening, as Aria waited in bed for his return, the quiet in their room felt overwhelming. When Damon came back long after midnight, he noticed her before getting into bed and turning his back to her.

"Damon," Aria said, her voice shaking from fear and sadness. "What's going on with us?"

He stayed quiet, and she soon noticed he had dozed off. Her eyes welled up as she gazed at the ceiling. The man she loved, the man she had put her faith in, was drifting away, and she couldn't figure out why.

The next day, Aria cleaned up Damon's office after he met with some pack leaders. As she sorted through papers on his desk, she touched something hidden under a pile of documents. She pulled it out a letter with worn edges.

She recognised the handwriting. Selena had written it.

Aria's heart raced as she opened the letter and read its contents. The message lacked details, but it still gave her goosebumps.

"...we need to act fast. If we delay, she might discover our plan. All our efforts will be in danger. I know you're reluctant, but this is the right thing to do..."

Aria's hands shook as she read the letter again. The words blurred as fear took over. Damon and Selena were talking about her. They had a secret plan that would alter everything.

She let go of the letter, her thoughts spinning. How could they betray her like this? Damon was her mate, the man she trusted and loved most. And Selena was her closest friend, the one she told everything to.

Betrayal. This word rang in her thoughts causing her great sorrow. She had a feeling as if someone had yanked the earth from beneath her feet making her tumble into a pit of hopelessness.

Aria sank into the chair behind Damon's desk, tears streaming down her face as the reality of the situation crashed over her. The people she loved most in the world had turned against her. The storm she had sensed brewing had finally arrived, and it was about to destroy everything she held dear.
