Chereads / Player Zero: The Rise of a Hero / Chapter 13 - Dawn of the Battle

Chapter 13 - Dawn of the Battle

The dawn arrived with an uneasy stillness that hung over Dawnstead. The usual hum of activity in the marketplace was subdued, replaced by the muted conversations of adventurers preparing for the inevitable. The Core of Shadows had been moved to the heart of the guild, its volatile energy contained within layers of protective wards. Yet, the tension was palpable.

Ryan adjusted the straps of his newly acquired armor, a lightweight set infused with faint enchantments for agility. The blacksmith had assured him it would help balance his speed and defense, and he hoped the man wasn't exaggerating. Beside him, Arya inspected her quiver of arrows, each tipped with a shimmering, magical alloy.

"Nervous?" Arya asked without looking up.

Ryan nodded. "A little. But I'm ready."

Grent let out a booming laugh, his massive shield slung over his back. "Good! Fear keeps you sharp, kid. Just don't let it freeze you."

A horn blared from the eastern wall, its deep, mournful sound echoing through the city. Every head turned toward the source, and the guildmaster's voice rang out above the din.

"To arms! The enemy is approaching!"

The eastern wall was a flurry of activity as adventurers and guards took their positions. Ryan, Arya, and Grent joined a squad stationed near the gate, their eyes fixed on the dark forest beyond. The treeline was unnervingly still, as though the forest itself was holding its breath.

Then, they came.

Shapes emerged from the shadows, at first a trickle and then a flood. Wolves, stalkers, and other twisted creatures poured out of the forest, their glowing eyes like embers in the gloom. At their center, a hulking figure loomed, its silhouette barely visible through the haze.

[Nightmare Titan] - Level 15

"Of course," Ryan muttered, gripping his sword tightly.

Arya's gaze narrowed. "Stay focused. We've handled worse."

"Speak for yourself," Ryan said under his breath, earning a smirk from Grent.

The Nightmare Titan let out a deafening roar, and the ground trembled beneath their feet. The creatures charged, their movements chaotic but coordinated. The battle began.

Ryan activated [Quick Strike], darting into the first wave with his sword flashing as it found its mark on a wolf's neck. The creature dissolved into particles, but another immediately took its place. Grent stepped forward, his hammer swinging in wide arcs to hold the line, while Arya's arrows rained down from above, each one striking with deadly precision.

"Keep it tight!" Arya shouted. "Don't let them separate us!"

Ryan nodded, his focus narrowing to the enemies in front of him. His HUD highlighted weak points on a group of stalkers, and he moved with precision, cutting them down one by one.

"They just keep coming!" Ryan yelled, his voice straining over the chaos.

"Then we keep fighting!" Grent bellowed, slamming his hammer into the ground and creating a shockwave that sent the creatures sprawling.

The Nightmare Titan moved closer, its massive frame towering over the battlefield. With every step, the earth shook, and its glowing eyes locked onto the gate. The defenders' efforts seemed insignificant in the face of its overwhelming presence.

"We have to take that thing down," Arya said, her voice tight with urgency. "Ryan, Grent, distract it. I'll aim for the core."

"Distract it?" Ryan asked incredulously. "How?"

"With guts and glory!" Grent roared, charging toward the Titan.

Ryan hesitated for only a moment before following. His sword glowed as he activated [Power Slash], a high-impact attack designed to break through tough defenses. The Titan swung one massive arm, and Grent barely managed to block it with his shield. The impact sent him skidding back, but he held his ground.

"Over here, you ugly bastard!" Grent taunted, slamming his hammer into the Titan's leg. The creature roared, shifting its attention to him.

Ryan seized the opening, darting around the Titan's side and targeting a glowing weak point on its knee. His sword struck true, and the Titan stumbled, its movements slowing.

Arya's arrows flew, each one striking the glowing core in the Titan's chest. The creature roared in pain, swiping at her position but missing as she leapt to another vantage point.

"It's weakening!" Arya called. "Keep the pressure on!"

Ryan and Grent worked in tandem, their attacks chipping away at the Titan's defenses. Every strike brought the creature closer to collapse, but it fought back with relentless fury. A stray swipe caught Ryan, sending him tumbling across the ground. His health bar flashed red.

"Ryan!" Arya shouted, loosing another arrow.

"I'm fine!" Ryan gritted out, downing a healing potion and forcing himself to his feet. The Titan's movements were slower now, its glowing core exposed and pulsating erratically.

"Finish it!" Arya yelled.

Summoning all his strength, Ryan charged forward, his sword glowing brightly. In a moment of desperation, his HUD flashed with a new ability: [Final Strike]. The description appeared briefly: A devastating, energy-draining attack that channels all of the user's strength into a single, high-impact blow. He leapt into the air, pouring all his energy into the attack, and drove the blade into the Titan's core. The creature let out a deafening roar before collapsing, its body disintegrating into a massive cloud of light and shadow.

+500 XP. Level Up! (Ryan is now Level 8)

The battlefield grew quiet as the remaining creatures fled back into the forest. The defenders cheered, their voices echoing through the walls of Dawnstead. Ryan stood over the fading remnants of the Titan, his chest heaving but his spirit soaring.

Arya and Grent approached, both looking equally exhausted but triumphant.

"Not bad, kid," Arya said, a rare smile crossing her face. "You're really starting to pull your weight."

Grent clapped him on the back, his laughter booming. "The kid's a hero now! First round's on me tonight."

Ryan managed a tired grin, the weight of the battle lifting as he looked around at the grateful faces of the other adventurers. For the first time, he truly felt like he belonged.

"This is just the beginning," Arya said, her tone serious despite her smile. "There's more coming. This was only a taste."

Ryan stood silently for a moment, staring at the dark treeline in the distance. The enemy may have been beaten back, but he knew the war was far from over.
