Chapter 1 - chapter one

Ikenne, a vibrant town in Ijebu Remo, would often come alive with excitement whenever a new bride was preparing for marriage. As soon as a spinster, ripe for marriage and formally betrothed, began making elaborate arrangements for her big day, the entire community would buzz with anticipation and joy.

Efunyela was a ravishing young lady whose breathtaking beauty and captivating charm had garnered admiration from a multitude of eligible bachelors. Her exceptional physical attributes, combined with her innate elegance and poise, rendered her a true gem in the eyes of many a suitor.

As fate would have it, Efunyela had been betrothed to Shopolu, a handsome and industrious young man of modest stature, who had established himself as a successful entrepreneur in the realm of agriculture and timber production. As a farmer, Shopolu had cultivated a thriving agricultural enterprise, reaping bountiful harvests that not only sustained his community but also contributed significantly to the local economy.

In addition to his agricultural pursuits, Shopolu had also diversified his interests by venturing into the timber industry, where he worked as a skilled sawyer. His exceptional work ethic, coupled with his innate business acumen, had enabled him to build a thriving timber business, which provided employment opportunities for numerous individuals in the community.

Shopolu's remarkable industriousness, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering dedication to his craft had earned him a reputation as a respected and accomplished young man, whose prospects for a bright and prosperous future appeared exceedingly promising. As Efunyela's betrothed, Shopolu was deeply committed to ensuring their forthcoming union would be filled with joy, prosperity, and a deepening love for one another.

In anticipation of her forthcoming nuptials, Efunyela, like many brides of her era, eagerly embarked on the preparations for her wedding ceremony. With a sense of excitement and purpose, she began to make arrangements for the requisite materials and rituals, diligently informing her parents of her needs.

As the wedding preparations gained momentum, Efunyela realized that she would need to venture beyond the confines of her hometown, Ikenne, in order to procure some of the essential items for the ceremony. This necessitated a journey to neighboring towns or markets, where she could acquire the requisite goods and services to ensure a memorable and joyous celebration.

"I've decided to travel to Lagos to purchase the necessary materials for my upcoming wedding," Efunyela informed her mother, her voice filled with excitement and anticipation.

Her mother, offering words of wisdom and caution, replied, "Very well, my dear. May you have a safe and successful journey. Be sure to return on time, as we have much to prepare for before the wedding ceremony."

Following a successful excursion to Lagos, where she procured all the necessary items for her forthcoming nuptials, Efunyela returned home, eager to embark on the next chapter of her life. In a relatively short period, the highly anticipated traditional wedding ceremony between Efunyela and her beloved Shopolu took place, surrounded by their immediate families, esteemed relatives, and close friends.

As the joyous occasion unfolded, the atmosphere was filled with an abundance of love, warmth, and well-wishes. The families of the bride and groom came together to bless the newlywed couple, showering them with heartfelt prayers, wise counsel, and sincere felicitations.

The elderly patriarch of the family, a revered and wise elder, offered a poignant and heartfelt prayer, beseeching the divine powers to abundantly bless the union. "May your marriage be fruitful and blessed with offspring," he fervently prayed. "May your children be the epitome of excellence, upholding the family's noble name and heritage with dignity and honor. May they be the shining stars that illuminate the family's legacy, guiding generations to come."

As the elderly patriarch's words resonated deeply, the gathering erupted into a joyful chorus of cheers, applause, and ululations, celebrating the union of the lovely couple. With tears of joy streaming down their faces, Efunyela and Shopolu basked in the love and adoration surrounding them, their hearts overflowing with gratitude and anticipation for the bright future that lay ahead.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Efunyela's eyes welled up with tears as she humbly received the heartfelt prayers and blessings from her family and friends. The poignant moment was a testament to the love and support that surrounded her, and she felt deeply grateful for the outpouring of affection.

As the sun began to set on the joyous wedding day, Efunyela was escorted to her new home, accompanied by a vibrant procession of her friends and relatives. The air was filled with the sweet sounds of melodious songs, the rhythmic beating of drums, and the lively rustling of feet as the group danced and sang in celebration of the newlywed couple.

With each step, Efunyela felt herself being welcomed into her new life, surrounded by the people she loved and cherished. The infectious joy and merriment of the occasion lifted her spirits, and she couldn't help but smile as she embarked on this new chapter with her beloved husband, Shopolu.

One year after the joyous celebration of their union, Efunyela's love and devotion to Shopolu were blessed with the miracle of new life. She discovered that she was expecting a child, and the anticipation of parenthood filled their home with excitement and joy.

As the months passed, Efunyela's pregnancy progressed smoothly, and she was finally rewarded with the ultimate blessing: the birth of a healthy, adorable baby boy. The arrival of their precious son brought unparalleled happiness to the young couple, and they were both deeply grateful for the gift of parenthood.

"Thank the Almighty for this precious gift to our family," exclaimed Shopolu, beaming with pride and joy as he cradled his newborn son in his arms. He breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that the birth had been without complications, and that his beloved Efunyela and their child were both healthy and thriving.

But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Just five short months after the baby's arrival, tragedy struck, and the young child's life was cruelly cut short. The devastating loss sent a tidal wave of grief crashing over the family, leaving Shopolu and Efunyela heartbroken and shattered.

Efunyela, in particular, was consumed by an overwhelming sorrow, her emotions raw and un containable. "Oh, my precious child, my precious child, my precious child..." she wailed, her voice cracking with anguish as she wept uncontrollably, her body wracked with sobs. The pain of losing her child was almost too much to bear, and she felt as though her heart was shattered into a million pieces.

Shopolu, with a heavy heart, attempted to console his grieving wife, his voice trembling with emotion. "My dear Efunyela, please don't cry anymore. Your tears, as painful as they are, will not bring back our beloved child. But we must find strength in each other and in the hope of a brighter future. In just one year's time, we shall celebrate the arrival of another precious child, and our joy will be renewed."

With these words, Shopolu tried to instill hope and comfort in his wife's sorrowful heart. And, as if fate had smiled upon them, his words proved prophetic. Efunyela gave birth to another beautiful baby boy, on March 6, 1909. The infant arrived, healthy and robust, filling the family's home with renewed joy and gratitude.

"Congratulations, my dear Efunyela!" Shopolu exclaimed, beaming with joy. "I told you that our sorrow would soon give way to smiles and laughter, and now, here we are, blessed with this precious little one. This baby is our ray of sunshine, our source of joy and happiness. Just look at him, so handsome and healthy, a perfect bundle of love!"

As Shopolu cradled the baby in his arms for the first time, he couldn't help but gaze lovingly into his tiny face. His eyes shone with wonder and adoration as he took in every detail of his newborn son. "What a loving child you are," he whispered, his voice filled with emotion. "You have brought so much joy to our lives, and we are forever grateful."

As the family and friends gathered to celebrate the arrival of the new baby, a close relative couldn't help but notice the striking resemblance between the newborn and their first child. "This little one is the spitting image of our dear departed child," they observed. "But mark my words, this child will not suffer the same fate. He will grow strong and thrive, and will one day carry on the family's legacy and name."

As the family rejoiced, they bestowed upon the baby a name that would shape his identity and destiny: Obafemi Oyeniyi. This naming ceremony marked an important milestone in the child's life, and the family prayed that he would grow up to be a worthy bearer of the name.

It's worth noting that Obafemi's father, Shopolu, had undergone a significant transformation in his life. In 1896, he had converted to Christianity, and a year later, in 1897, he was baptized, taking on the Christian name David. From then on, he was known as David Shopolu Awolowo. Efunyela, too, had become a regular attendee at church services and a devoted contributor to the community. Although it took some time, she eventually agreed to be baptized, deepening her commitment to her faith.

At the tender age of three months, Obafemi Oyeniyi underwent baptism, and his baptismal name, Jeremiah, was added to his existing names, resulting in the full name Jeremiah Obafemi Oyeniyi Awolowo.

Growing up in a traditional and disciplined society, Obafemi was raised within a strict yet loving framework. His childhood was spent surrounded by extended family members who resided with his parents, creating a vibrant and supportive community.

While Obafemi was undoubtedly showered with love and affection by his relatives, he was also taught valuable life lessons through a balanced approach to discipline and praise. Whenever he misbehaved, he was corrected and punished accordingly, but when he demonstrated good behavior, he was lavished with praise and encouragement, instilling in him a strong sense of responsibility and morality.

In the harmonious community where Obafemi grew up, love and kindness were palpable, and peace prevailed due to the overwhelming majority of law-abiding citizens. On one particular day, Obafemi accompanied his mother to the bustling market, where they chanced upon a peculiar sight.

As they navigated through the crowded stalls, Obafemi's curious eyes spotted two robust men carrying a white young man in a hammock, reminiscent of a basket used to transport yams. With childlike wonder, Obafemi exclaimed to his mother, "Mother, look! Two men are carrying a white man in a hammock, just like a basket of yams!"

Efunyela smiled knowingly as she explained to Obafemi, "That, my dear child, is the customary manner in which high-ranking government officials, particularly those of European descent, are transported when they visit our humble community." Obafemi's curiosity was piqued, and he inquired further, "But why must they be carried? Are they incapable of walking like everyone else?"

Efunyela's response was enlightening, "This mode of transportation is actually the most convenient and efficient way to convey them to distant locations, especially considering the terrain and climate of our region." She added, "It's not that the white man is unable to walk; it's simply that there are explicit instructions to provide him with this special treatment."

Obafemi's eyes widened as he scanned the scene, taking in the commotion surrounding the white man. He observed, "Mother, I see two men dressed in police uniforms accompanying him." Efunyela nodded thoughtfully, "Yes, it's not surprising. The presence of law enforcement is a standard precautionary measure whenever high-ranking officials visit our area."

As they watched, a crowd of onlookers, comprising people of all ages and backgrounds, began to gather around the white man. Efunyela remarked, "You see, Obafemi, it's a rare occurrence for a white man to visit Ikenne, and that's why everyone is so eager to catch a glimpse of him. The novelty of his presence is a source of fascination for our community, and people are naturally drawn to the excitement and curiosity that surrounds him."

"Mother, may I follow them to get a closer look at the white man?" Obafemi asked, his curiosity getting the better of him. Efunyela nodded, "Yes, you may, but don't linger too long. When you return, wait for me under the tree in the market. I need to purchase some garri and fish."

With his mother's permission, Obafemi trailed behind the two men carrying the white man in a hammock. The white man appeared to be in high spirits, casting brief, pleased glances at the gathering crowd. As Obafemi watched, he noticed the excitement etched on the faces of the people who had assembled around the white man, forming a small, buzzing throng.

The air was electric with curiosity, and Obafemi found himself swept up in the fervor, his eyes fixed on the white man as he smiled and acknowledged the onlookers. The scene was a fascinating spectacle, one that Obafemi would not soon forget.

With a sense of wonder, Obafemi strolled effortlessly behind the crowd, now mere yards away from the white man. As he listened in, a wise elderly man with a head full of grey hairs exclaimed, "Ah, this man possesses immense power, a truly formidable authority!" A younger onlooker nodded in agreement, adding, "Yes, sir, he represents the mighty King of England, a powerful monarch who reigns over a vast empire."

Another young man chimed in, observing, "The white man seems to be relishing his role, taking great pleasure in his work." As the crowd continued to buzz with excitement, Obafemi found himself at the forefront of the king's palace, where the carriers gently set down their distinguished passenger. The white man emerged from the hammock, stretching his limbs and taking in his surroundings, as the onlookers watched with bated breath.

As the white man's entourage dispersed, Obafemi continued to observe the scene before him. He spotted a few of his friends among the crowd of onlookers and exchanged brief greetings with them. However, mindful of his mother's instructions, he soon bid his friends farewell and sprinted towards the designated meeting spot under the tree.

Upon arriving, he spotted his mother laden with various items, and he hastened to assist her, eager to lend a helping hand. Obafemi was a young boy with strong family bonds, and he cherished the relationships he had with certain family members. His grandmother, Asefule, who was his father's mother, held a special place in his heart. She was his trusted confidante and protector, always offering guidance and support whenever he needed it.

In addition to his grandmother, Obafemi was also extremely close to his parents, whom he admired and respected immensely. To him, they embodied the ideal qualities of parenthood, providing love, care, and wisdom that helped shape him into the person he was becoming.

As the evening unfolded, Shopolu settled in beside Obafemi, and together they gazed up at the moon, now shining brightly in the night sky. Shopolu began to regale Obafemi with enchanting moonlight stories, weaving a spell of wonder and magic around his young son.

As the stories came to a close, Shopolu's tone shifted, becoming more serious and solemn. He turned to Obafemi, his eyes locked intently on his son's face. "Obafemi, my child, I want to speak to you about our family's heritage. You come from a long line of distinguished ancestors, and it's essential that you understand and appreciate your roots."

Shopolu paused, collecting his thoughts before continuing. "Your great-grandfather was a man of great honor and prestige, holding not one but two revered traditional titles: Oluwo and Losi. The title of Oluwo is one of the most esteemed and respected in all of Ikenne, while the Losi title is a cherished family legacy, passed down through generations."

Obafemi's father imparted wise words to his son, emphasizing the significance of their family's legacy and the importance of upholding its values. "As a member of our esteemed family, including our extended relatives, you have the potential to hold prestigious positions in the future," he said. "However, to excel in these roles, you must demonstrate exceptional leadership by setting a good example for others to follow."

He continued, "It is essential that you remain truthful at all times, fearless in the face of adversity, and unwavering in your commitment to shun hypocrisy. Let honesty and hard work be the guiding principles that shape your character and inform your decisions." Obafemi's father concluded his heartfelt advice, and his son expressed gratitude for the wisdom imparted.

With a sense of satisfaction, Obafemi's father dismissed his son, reminding him to remember their conversation and to pass on their family's legacy to his own children in the future. "It is crucial that they understand our family's history and heritage in Ikenne," he emphasized. With that, Obafemi's father retired to his bed, leaving his son to ponder the weighty words of wisdom he had shared.
