Chapter 16 - Ch-6 : Beneath the surface

The Quickdrive ship hummed softly as it streaked across Mars's vast, rocky plains, its path set for the next mine. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was quiet but charged, each team member lost in their own thoughts about the recent revelations and their growing stockpile of resources.

Brady leaned against the command console, staring out at the red horizon. "We've been through hell these past days. We're wanted by a whole planet and now we're scavenging mines for scraps to build a ship that might be our only shot at survival." He sighed. "Sometimes, it feels like we're just chasing shadows."

Jason glanced up from cleaning his Sonic Steel Hive weapon. "You're not wrong, but those shadows are hiding something. That rogue Periclusapien meeting the mayor of A-7? That wasn't just random. There's more to it."

Brady rubbed his temple. "I already told you. Rogues are loyal to money and power. The mayor probably hired him as a paid assassin or a bodyguard. Nothing more."

Viktor, sitting silently in the corner, finally spoke, his voice measured. "Maybe. But something about that meeting doesn't sit right with me."

Caleb, adjusting the settings on a portable scanner, looked up. "Why not?"

Viktor leaned forward, his tone cold and analytical. "Think about it. When the invasion happened, the Periclusapiens completely ignored Mars. They focused all their efforts on Earth. If Mars wasn't even on their radar during the invasion, how would a rogue find out about the existence of Martian society, let alone be hired by one of its mayors?"

The room fell silent as the weight of Viktor's words settled.

"Maybe he stumbled onto Mars by accident?" Jason suggested, though his voice lacked conviction.

Viktor shook his head. "Periclusapiens don't stumble. Even a rogue operates with purpose. And if this one was cut off from their society, it wouldn't have the resources or knowledge to navigate Mars's secretive networks."

Brady frowned, the logic starting to sink in. "So, what are you saying? That someone told him about Mars?"

Viktor's piercing gaze met Brady's. "Not just someone. The Periclusapiens must have known about Mars all along. And if they spared Mars during the invasion, there's only one explanation—they struck a deal with someone already here."

---

The realization hit like a thunderclap. Brady slammed his fist on the console, his gauntlet sparking faintly. "Damn it! You're saying humans are behind this?"

Jason's expression darkened. "If that's true, it means the Periclusapiens weren't even our real enemies. It's the secret society pulling the strings, selling out Earth to save their own skin."

Caleb looked pale as he processed the implications. "But why? Why would they betray humanity? What could possibly be worth the destruction of Earth?"

Brady's jaw clenched. "Power. Control. These secret society types—whoever they are—probably thought they could bargain their way into safety by offering Earth as a bargaining chip."

"And Mars?" Jason asked.

"They likely promised the Periclusapiens something more valuable," Viktor said, his voice cold. "Earth was expendable to them."

The team sat in grim silence, the weight of the truth pressing down on them. The idea that humanity's downfall wasn't entirely alien-driven but orchestrated by their own kind was a bitter pill to swallow.

---

Brady broke the silence. "If what you're saying is true, then there's a leader behind all this. Someone at the top of the chain pulling the strings."

Jason nodded slowly. "It makes sense. An operation of this scale would need someone calling the shots."

Caleb, always the pragmatist, added, "And if we're going to stop this, we need to find them. We need to understand what they're after."

Viktor leaned back, his mind racing. "The blueprint. That starship design wasn't just lying around on some random artifact. The Iron Chief was using it for something."

"To excavate resources to build the ship," Caleb concluded. "That's why he was in the mine. He wasn't just protecting it—he was collecting materials."

Brady's eyes narrowed. "But why a Hyperdrive starship? What makes it so important?"

---

Viktor gestured toward the blueprint display Angie had projected earlier. "The Hyperdrive starship's main feature is its resilience. It's designed to withstand extreme pressures. That's what makes it the most practical ship for exploring Jupiter."

"Jupiter?" Jason frowned.

Viktor nodded. "It's not a law that you need a Hyperdrive starship to go there, but it's the ideal choice. The pressure in Jupiter's atmosphere and the conditions of its moons would crush anything less."

Brady's mind raced. "So, the secret society is building a ship to reach Jupiter. But why? What's on Jupiter that's worth all this effort?"

Caleb chimed in, his voice tense. "Jupiter's moons are rich in rare elements and energy sources. If the secret society has a base there or is mining resources, it could explain their power and influence."

"And their willingness to betray Earth," Viktor added. "If they control Jupiter's resources, they control the most valuable real estate in the solar system."

---

The team stared at the map, the realization sinking in. Brady finally broke the silence. "We have to get to Jupiter."

Jason raised an eyebrow. "That's a tall order. We don't even have a finished Hyperdrive starship yet."

Brady's voice was firm. "Then we finish it. We collect every resource we need, build this ship, and find out what the secret society is hiding on Jupiter."

Caleb nodded, determination in his eyes. "The mines on Mars should have enough materials for the rest of the ship. We'll need more hyperalloy, energy cores, and advanced circuitry."

"And weapons," Viktor added. "If the secret society is guarding Jupiter, they'll have defenses."

Brady turned to Angie's holographic display. "Angie, plot a course for the next mine. We're not stopping until this ship is complete."

"Command acknowledged," Angie replied. "Setting course. Estimated arrival: 37 minutes."

---

The Quickdrive ship descended slowly onto the dusty red surface, the landing gear hissing as it touched down near the next mine entrance. The structure was massive, with towering metal gates covered in rust and grime. Automated turrets flanked the entrance, their sensors scanning the barren landscape for intruders.

"Angie, status report," Brady said, his voice sharp.

Angie's hologram flickered to life on the console. "Scans indicate six automated turrets and a dozen guards stationed within the outer perimeter. Defensive measures appear standard but require caution."

Jason smirked, loading his Sonic Steel Hive. "Standard means we've seen worse."

Brady nodded. "Stick to the plan. Viktor, Caleb, you're with me. Jason, cover the rear. Angie, disable the turrets if possible. We move in fast and quiet."

The team exited the ship, their boots crunching on the Martian soil. As they approached the mine entrance, Angie worked her magic, tapping into the mine's systems remotely.

"Turrets disabled," Angie reported. "However, guards remain alert."

"Good enough," Brady muttered, gripping his Impact Iron Gauntlets tightly. "Let's move."

The team slipped into the shadows, their movements precise and coordinated. Viktor, with his Electric Micro Blades, took point, silently neutralizing the first pair of guards near the gates. Brady and Caleb followed, taking out two more with quick strikes from their weapons.

Jason held back, his Sonic Steel Hive primed for crowd control. When a group of three guards came running toward the commotion, he unleashed a wave of sonic energy, sending them sprawling to the ground.

"Clear the rest quickly," Brady ordered, his voice calm despite the intensity of the situation.

Viktor moved like a shadow, his blades flashing as he dispatched the final two guards. The area was silent once more, the only sound the faint hum of machinery coming from inside the mine.

"Area secure," Viktor reported.

Brady motioned toward the entrance. "Let's get to work. Caleb, start scanning for resources. Jason, keep watch. Viktor, you and I will handle the heavy lifting."

---

Inside the mine, the air was thick with the metallic scent of ore and dust. Massive veins of hyperalloy glimmered faintly under the dim lights, their value immediately apparent. Crates of energy cores and advanced circuitry were stacked against the walls, ready for transport.

Caleb whistled softly, his scanner beeping. "This place is a goldmine—literally. Hyperalloy veins are rich, and these energy cores are in excellent condition. With this haul, we'll be one step closer to finishing the ship."

Brady activated the Rank-4 Impact Driller, the machine roaring to life in his hands. "Then let's not waste time. We'll need everything we can carry."

The team worked tirelessly, drilling into the hyperalloy veins and extracting chunks of the rare metal. Caleb cataloged the energy cores, ensuring they were undamaged, while Viktor and Jason loaded the crates onto a hover cart.

"Angie, how are we looking on time?" Brady asked, sweat beading on his brow as he wrestled the driller.

"Estimated time before reinforcements arrive: 22 minutes," Angie replied.

"Plenty of time," Jason said, wiping dirt off his hands. "Let's clean this place out."

As they worked, Caleb paused, examining a particularly dense section of hyperalloy. "This vein is unusually pure. If we extract it carefully, it could serve as the primary frame for the Hyperdrive starship."

"Then prioritize it," Brady said, adjusting the driller's settings. "We need the best materials we can get."

The team focused their efforts on the pure vein, extracting it with meticulous precision. Chunks of hyperalloy were loaded onto the hover cart, along with the energy cores and circuitry.

---

As they neared the end of their mining session, Viktor spotted something unusual in a side chamber. "Brady, over here."

Brady joined him, his eyes narrowing as he saw what Viktor had found—a heavily secured container marked with strange symbols.

"What do you think it is?" Viktor asked.

Brady frowned. "Angie, can you scan this?"

Angie's hologram appeared, projecting a grid over the container. "Scan complete. The container holds a concentrated power source—likely a prototype reactor. It could be used to enhance the Hyperdrive starship's efficiency."

"Or it could be a trap," Caleb warned.

Brady considered their options. "We can't leave it behind. Viktor, help me open it. Caleb, keep scanning for any hidden security measures."

With careful precision, Brady and Viktor pried the container open, revealing a glowing core pulsating with energy.

"Bingo," Jason said, his eyes widening.

"We'll need to stabilize it before moving it," Caleb said, already adjusting his equipment.

The team worked quickly, securing the reactor and loading it onto the cart.

---

"Reinforcements incoming," Angie warned, her tone urgent. "Multiple vehicles approaching from the east."

Brady cursed under his breath. "Time to move! Everyone, back to the ship!"

The team pushed the hover cart toward the exit, their movements swift and coordinated. As they reached the surface, the rumble of approaching vehicles grew louder.

Jason turned, his Sonic Steel Hive ready. "I'll hold them off. Get the cart to the ship!"

"Negative," Brady said. "We're not splitting up. Angie, prep the ship for a quick takeoff."

"Command acknowledged. Engines warming up," Angie replied.

The team sprinted toward the Quickdrive ship, dodging incoming fire from the reinforcements. Viktor threw an explosive charge behind them, creating a cloud of debris that slowed their pursuers.

They reached the ship just as the first vehicle crested the hill. Brady and Jason fired back, covering the others as they loaded the resources onto the cargo bay.

"Go, go, go!" Brady shouted, leaping aboard as the ship's ramp closed.

Angie launched the ship into the air, the engines roaring as they sped away from the mine.

---

Inside the ship, the team collapsed into their seats, exhaustion etched on their faces.

"Good haul," Caleb said, his voice tinged with relief. "We've got more than enough hyperalloy and energy cores to finish the ship."

"And that reactor is going to give us an edge," Viktor added.

Brady nodded, a rare smile crossing his face. "We're one step closer to Jupiter."

Jason grinned, leaning back in his seat. "Not bad for a day's work."

As the Quickdrive ship disappeared into the Martian horizon, the team prepared for the next leg of their journey. They knew the road ahead would be even more dangerous, but with every step, they were inching closer to uncovering the truth—and striking back at those who had betrayed humanity.
