Echoes of the Abyss
The night sky stretched endlessly above Akane as he rode through the desolate wasteland, the faint stars twinkling like distant memories. His mare's hooves thudded softly against the cracked, barren ground, the sound swallowed by the oppressive silence. The southern border was as lifeless as Adewan had described, yet Akane couldn't shake the feeling of being watched.
He tightened his grip on the reins, his crimson eyes scanning the horizon. Shadows danced in the periphery of his vision, fleeting and insubstantial. Was it paranoia? Or had the Oblivion Order anticipated his arrival?
"Focus," he muttered to himself, his voice barely audible over the soft whistling of the wind.
As the barren landscape gave way to jagged cliffs, Akane dismounted, his boots crunching against loose gravel. He led the mare to a narrow alcove, tying her reins securely to a dead tree twisted into a grotesque shape by the elements. The blade at his side felt heavier than usual, its weight a constant reminder of what awaited him.
With a deep breath, he began the climb up the cliffside. Each step was deliberate, his movements as silent as the shadows that seemed to gather around him. Reaching the top, Akane crouched low, his gaze sweeping the terrain below. What he saw made his blood run cold.
In the distance, faint lights flickered—fires, arranged in a pattern too precise to be natural. Encampments. The Oblivion Order was here, and they weren't hiding.
Akane's lips curved into a grim smile. "They really do want to be found."
But why? The question nagged at him as he slipped back into the shadows, retreating to a safer vantage point. He needed to learn more before reporting back. Whatever the Oblivion Order was planning, it was bigger than a mere border skirmish.
Elsewhere: Kane's Gambit
The clash of blades echoed through the dense forest as Kane's battle raged on. His opponent, the masked scout, moved with unnatural speed, his strikes imbued with a dark energy that seemed to pulse in rhythm with his jagged blade.
Kane sidestepped a vicious swing, his own blade slicing through the air with precision. Sparks flew as their weapons collided, the force of the impact sending shockwaves through the ground. Sweat dripped down Kane's brow, but his focus remained unbroken.
"You're better than I expected," the scout sneered, his voice distorted by the mask. "But it won't matter. You'll die here."
Kane didn't respond. Words were a waste of energy in a fight like this. Instead, he shifted his stance, his movements fluid and deliberate. The scout lunged again, and this time, Kane didn't dodge. He parried the blow and countered with a strike aimed at the man's exposed side.
The blade connected, but instead of flesh, it met resistance—an invisible barrier that flared to life, shimmering with dark energy. The scout laughed, his voice a mixture of mockery and triumph.
"You think I'd come unprepared for the likes of you?"
Kane's jaw tightened. This wasn't an ordinary scout. The dark energy surrounding the man wasn't just a weapon—it was a shield, a curse, and a source of power all in one.
Before he could react, the scout slammed his palm against the ground, releasing a surge of energy that sent Kane flying backward. He landed hard, the impact driving the air from his lungs. For a moment, the world spun, but Kane forced himself to his feet, his blade steady in his grip.
"Impressive," the scout said, his tone mocking. "Most would be dead by now."
Kane's eyes narrowed. "I'm not most."
With a roar, he charged, his blade gleaming in the moonlight. The scout met him head-on, their weapons colliding in a storm of sparks and fury. But this time, Kane wasn't just fighting to survive. He was analyzing, studying his opponent's movements, searching for a weakness in the dark energy that protected him.
And then he saw it—a faint flicker in the shield's glow, a momentary lapse with every attack the scout unleashed. It wasn't much, but it was enough.
Akane: Into the Lion's Den
Back at the border, Akane crept closer to the encampment. The fires burned brighter now, illuminating the figures gathered around them. Soldiers in black armor moved with military precision, their voices low but purposeful. At the center of the camp stood a massive tent, its entrance guarded by two imposing figures.
Akane's instincts screamed at him to retreat, to return to the clan and report what he had seen. But something about the scene compelled him to stay. He needed to know what lay inside that tent.
Summoning his power, Akane faded into the shadows, his presence vanishing like smoke in the wind. He moved with the silence of a predator, slipping past the guards and into the tent's interior.
The sight that greeted him was unlike anything he had expected. A massive void crystal hovered in the center of the space, its surface pulsing with dark energy. Around it, figures in black robes chanted in a language Akane didn't recognize. The air was thick with malevolence, the kind that seeped into your bones and refused to let go.
Akane's heart raced as he took in the scene. This wasn't just a scout mission or a small operation. This was a ritual, a gathering of power on a scale that threatened to consume everything in its path.
Before he could slip away, one of the robed figures turned, their glowing eyes locking onto him. A shout rang out, and chaos erupted.
The Turning Tide
Back in the forest, Kane seized his chance. As the scout unleashed another wild strike, Kane sidestepped and drove his blade forward, aiming for the flickering point in the shield's glow. The blade pierced through, shattering the dark energy and plunging into the scout's chest.
The man staggered, his eyes wide with shock. "How…?"
Kane twisted the blade, his expression grim. "You underestimated me."
With a final push, he pulled his blade free, and the scout crumpled to the ground. Kane stood over him, his breath ragged but victorious.
