Chereads / Evelyn : The White Wolf / Chapter 4 - Lunar Shadow

Chapter 4 - Lunar Shadow

Evelyn's breaths came in short, panicked gasps as she stared down at her transformed body. The white fur glimmered faintly in the moonlight, unnervingly pristine against the dirt and blood surrounding her. Her limbs trembled with a mix of exhaustion and shock. The rogue wolf was gone, but she could still feel the ghost of its claws tearing into her shoulder.

"What's happening to me?" she whispered to herself, though no sound came from her wolf mouth.

Before she could piece together the strange, terrifying reality she'd just been thrown into, a rustling sound came from the trees behind her. Evelyn tensed, her instincts sharpening again, though her mind screamed at her to run.

A figure emerged from the shadows, his movements fluid and deliberate. The man was tall, with dark hair that caught the silver of the moonlight, and eyes that glowed faintly gold in the darkness. He was dressed simply, in black jeans and a jacket, but there was an otherworldly air about him—something ancient and dangerous.

"Easy," the man said, his voice calm but commanding. "I'm not here to hurt you."

Evelyn growled, a low, warning sound that surprised even her. She took a step back, lowering her head in a defensive stance.

"I'm Kael," he continued, holding his hands up in a show of peace. "And if you don't want to get ripped apart by more rogues, you'll let me help you."

She hesitated, her wolf instincts warring with her human thoughts. Who was this man? Why was he here?

Kael took a cautious step closer, his glowing eyes meeting hers. "You don't understand what's happening to you yet, do you?" he asked, his tone softening slightly. "This isn't just some random wolf attack. You're more than a werewolf, Evelyn. You're the Lunar Shadow."

The words meant nothing to her, but the way he said them made her stomach twist. She shook her head, trying to focus, to demand answers, but the effort sent a wave of exhaustion crashing over her.

Kael moved quickly, catching her as she stumbled. His touch was firm but careful, and despite herself, Evelyn felt an odd sense of safety. Slowly, she lost consciousness.

"Come on," he said, his voice steady. "We need to get you out of here before more show up." He muttered to himself more than to Evelyn.

He helped her to her feet—or rather, her paws—and guided her toward the edge of the clearing. Evelyn could feel the strength radiating from him, a quiet power that made her both wary and curious.

As they moved through the trees, until he found a perfect spot. He knew her body would begin began to shifting soon so Kael shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her. "You'll get used to that," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. "Eventually."

After what seemed like forever, Evelyn's eyes fluttered open, the world around her spinning as she slowly came to her senses. She was lying on a soft, unfamiliar surface, her body aching with a dull, persistent throb. The cold was gone, replaced by the warmth of a fire nearby, crackling softly.

She shot up into a sitting position, her heart racing as she looked around. Panic gripped her, but her body was still and quiet. For a moment, she thought she might still be dreaming, but the soreness in her muscles and the confusion in her mind told her otherwise.

Her breath hitched as she instinctively pulled the jacket Kael had draped over her around her naked body. She shot a wary look at him, his presence still as unsettling as before. He sat across from her, leaning casually against a large tree, eyes glowing faintly in the dim light.

Evelyn's chest rose and fell quickly, her hands clenched at her sides, ready to fight if she needed to. She couldn't shake the memory of what had just happened— the transformation, the rogue wolf, the overwhelming surge of power coursing through her. What was she? She clearly couldn't remember.

Kael didn't react to her sudden movement, his gaze calm, almost detached, as though he had expected her to be on edge.

"You're awake," he said simply, his voice low and steady, almost like a lullaby in the silence of the woods.

Evelyn didn't know what to say. Her heart raced, her thoughts clouded with fear and uncertainty. "What did you do to me?" she demanded, her voice shaking.

Kael raised an eyebrow but didn't move from his spot. "I didn't do anything to you, Evelyn. You did this to yourself."

She clenched her fists, frustration building. "I didn't choose any of this!" She paused, eyes narrowing. "What does that even mean? 'Lunar Shadow'? Why do I feel—" she swallowed hard, her voice faltering, "—why do I feel like I'm not in control of my own body?" How do you know my name?"

Kael sighed, glancing around as if checking for threats before meeting her gaze again. "Because I've been looking for you," he said simply. " As I said, Evelyn. You're something much rarer, much more powerful. You're the Lunar Shadow—a wolf born under a lunar eclipse, destined for a grave responsibility."

Evelyn shook her head, stepping back. "No. No, this has to be a mistake. I'm just... I'm just me. I didn't even know werewolves were real until—"

"Until tonight," Kael finished for her, his voice grim. "I know this is overwhelming, but you don't have time to deny it. You're still adjusting. This power— it's a part of you now. It's always been there, but tonight... it woke up. The rogue wolf that attacked you? It wasn't a coincidence. Someone sent it, hoping to kill you before you realized what you are."

Her heart pounded in her chest as his words sank in. "Kill me? Why?"

"Because of what you represent," Kael said, his tone serious. "The Lunar Shadow is said to have the power to tip the balance between the packs. You could bring peace—or you could destroy everything."

Evelyn stared at him, her mind spinning. This couldn't be real. This had to be some kind of nightmare. And yet, the memory of her transformation, of the raw power coursing through her veins, made it impossible to dismiss.

"I don't understand. I was just... me. A normal girl. How could this happen? Why me?" Her voice cracked with desperation.

Kael sighed, standing up from his spot and walking slowly towards her. "You're not just a normal girl, Evelyn. You never were. You were born for this—born to carry the power of the Lunar Shadow." He paused, watching her carefully. "And because of that, there are people who will stop at nothing to destroy you."

Kael stepped closer, his gaze steady. "I don't have all the answers. But I do know this—you're in danger, and if you want to survive, you'll need to trust me."

Evelyn swallowed hard, her gaze flicking to the forest beyond. The sounds of distant wolves still echoed through the trees, haunting and dangerous. She could feel their presence—almost as if they were waiting, watching.

"Why, it still doesn't make sense. Why kill me?" she whispered, her voice almost lost in the crackling of the fire.

Kael hesitated, his eyes darkening with something Evelyn couldn't quite read. "Because there are those who want to use the power of the Lunar Shadow... and others who want to destroy it before it can be used."

The weight of his words settled heavily on her chest. Her mind swirled with the implications, but before she could voice another question, a sharp pain shot through her body. She gasped, her head spinning as the world blurred again.

Kael moved quickly, his hand steady on her shoulder as her body began to shift again. Her muscles rippled beneath her skin, her bones cracking and contorting, but this time, the transformation was more controlled, less painful. The white fur spread across her body, and she could feel the power coursing through her once again.

She let out a strangled cry, collapsing back into the soft earth as her limbs trembled with the effort to maintain her human form. She could still feel the wolf inside her, pushing to break free, but for a moment, she held it back.

Evelyn's mind raced, her breathing uneven. Her skin was cold, and the jacket she had clutched around her body now lay discarded beside her. She was trembling—not from fear, but from the overwhelming power she could no longer ignore. She was both human and wolf—straddling two worlds, neither fully one nor the other.

Kael stood at a distance, his gaze unwavering as he watched her. "You'll get used to it," he said, his voice low. "The transformation. The power. Everything."

Evelyn's eyes burned with frustration and confusion. She wasn't sure if she could handle this, if she could survive it. She had no choice but to trust Kael— but how could she trust someone who seemed to know everything about her when she didn't even know who she was anymore?

But in the end, as her body settled back into its human form, one thing became painfully clear: She couldn't go back. There was no going back to the life she once had. Whatever she was now, it was a part of her, and she would have to learn how to live with it.

Kael's voice cut through her thoughts. "Get some rest," he said. "We'll figure this out together."

Evelyn glanced at him warily. She didn't know if she could trust him completely, but right now, he was the only one who could help her make sense of this twisted reality.

And as she lay back, closing her eyes, she wondered just what kind of power she had unlocked—and what kind of future awaited her as the Lunar Shadow.
