Chapter 4: Into the Unknown

The morning sun filtered through the thick canopy of trees, casting long shadows across the mansion's overgrown garden. The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and leaves, a stark contrast to the sterile, bustling city Haruto Takeda had once known. It was the first full day of their new reality, and there was no time to waste.

Haruto stood outside the mansion's front door, his hand resting on the hilt of the sword at his side, eyes scanning the surrounding forest. The landscape was eerily quiet, a stillness that felt unnatural. He wasn't sure what awaited them beyond the mansion's walls, but one thing was certain: it was dangerous out there.

"Ready to go?" Haruto called to his two companions, who were emerging from the mansion's entrance.

Sakura, who had managed to get a little sleep despite the unsettling atmosphere, nodded. "I guess we don't have a choice. We can't just hide here forever."

Miyu was already packing her bag, adjusting her gear. "We'll be fine. We've got weapons, supplies, and each other. We just need to stay sharp."

Haruto gave a small nod, though his thoughts were far from calm. He wasn't worried about his own safety—after all, his father's training had equipped him with the skills to fight and survive. But the girls were different. He had to protect them, keep them safe, and the weight of that responsibility weighed heavily on him.

"Let's move out," Haruto said, his voice firm.

The trio made their way down the narrow path that led deeper into the forest. The mansion quickly faded from view as they ventured further away from civilization. The trees grew taller and denser, blocking much of the sunlight, casting the forest floor in a perpetual twilight. Haruto's instincts were on high alert, every rustle in the underbrush making his muscles tense.

Miyu, always eager, walked slightly ahead, her eyes darting around. "Do you think there are any other survivors out here?"

"I don't know," Haruto answered honestly. "We'll find out soon enough. The system mentioned gathering allies, so we need to keep our eyes open."

"And if we don't find anyone?" Sakura asked, her voice soft but filled with uncertainty.

"Then we'll keep going. We'll survive. But we're not giving up," Haruto said, his tone unwavering. "Not until we figure out what's happening."

The day passed slowly as they walked deeper into the forest, the quiet surroundings providing little comfort. They stopped for breaks when needed, and Haruto made sure to keep an eye on their supplies, rationing them carefully. Water was plentiful in the forest, but food was another matter entirely. They would need to find more if they were going to last.

Around midday, Haruto heard something—an unsettling growl in the distance.

His hand instinctively went to the gun at his side, and the girls stiffened beside him. "Stay close," Haruto whispered. He motioned for them to take cover behind a large tree.

The growl grew louder, followed by the unmistakable sound of something large moving through the underbrush. Haruto's heart beat faster, his senses sharp.

Out of the trees emerged another creature—larger than the one they'd encountered in the city. It was a hulking, twisted monstrosity with sharp claws and teeth that glinted in the dim light. Its body was covered in patches of spiny armor, and its eyes glowed with an eerie red hue.

Haruto's grip tightened on his handgun, but he didn't make a move yet. The creature seemed to be sniffing the air, unaware of their presence.

Miyu's voice was barely a whisper. "What do we do?"

"We wait," Haruto murmured. "I'll take the first shot. Stay behind me and stay quiet."

The creature moved closer, its snout twitching as it detected something in the air. It was close now—too close. Haruto's mind raced. The creature was a danger, and they couldn't afford to let it get any closer.

With a swift motion, Haruto pulled his gun from its holster and aimed at the creature's head. His finger tightened on the trigger.

Bang!

The shot rang out, hitting the creature square in the forehead. But to his horror, it barely flinched. The bullet seemed to have little effect on the monstrous beast. Instead, it let out a screeching roar and turned toward them, its glowing eyes now fixed on Haruto.

"Shit," Haruto cursed under his breath. The creature was fast, much faster than he had anticipated. It lunged toward them with terrifying speed.

"Move!" Haruto shouted, grabbing Sakura and Miyu by the arm and pulling them out of the creature's path.

The three of them scrambled into the underbrush, but the creature wasn't far behind. It charged through the trees, its claws slashing at the air. Haruto's heart pounded in his chest as he fumbled for his sword, pulling it free from its sheath just in time.

"Haruto!" Sakura cried out, her face pale as she stumbled behind him.

"Stay back!" Haruto ordered, positioning himself between the creature and the girls. "I'll handle this."

The creature roared again, swiping at him with its claws. Haruto ducked and sidestepped with impressive speed, his sword flashing as he slashed at the creature's exposed side. The sword cut deep into its armor-like hide, but it didn't stop. The creature was relentless.

Haruto's breathing quickened. He was faster, more skilled—but this creature was tough. It took everything he had just to keep it at bay.

"Haruto, watch out!" Miyu screamed.

He didn't have time to react. The creature swung its massive claw toward him with terrifying speed. Haruto barely managed to raise his sword to block the attack, the force of the blow sending him stumbling back.

Clang!

The sword scraped against the creature's claws, but Haruto was thrown off balance. He crashed into a nearby tree, pain shooting through his body. His vision blurred for a moment, but he didn't have time to dwell on it. The creature was already moving in for the kill.

Just as it was about to strike, a loud bang rang out from behind him.

Haruto's heart skipped a beat. The creature staggered back, a bullet hole in its skull. It fell to the ground with a heavy thud, dead.

Haruto turned to see Sakura standing with the handgun in her hand, her face determined.

"Don't you dare get hurt on me, Haruto," she said, her voice calm but filled with fire.

Haruto stared at her for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest. He had been so focused on protecting them that he had nearly let his guard down.

"Thanks," he said breathlessly, pushing himself up from the ground. "You're a lifesaver."

Miyu gave a small chuckle, though she was clearly shaken. "You two are unbelievable."

Haruto glanced down at the creature's corpse. It was a terrifying reminder of what awaited them in this new world. They couldn't afford to underestimate the dangers out here.

"We need to keep moving," Haruto said, his voice steady. "We'll rest once we're farther into the forest. But right now, we're not out of danger yet."

Sakura and Miyu nodded, their expressions determined. The group continued on, moving deeper into the forest, the encounter with the creature weighing heavily on them. It was clear that survival in this new world would not be easy, but they had already proven something important: together, they could face anything.

And Haruto knew, without a doubt, that they would continue fighting—for each other, and for the future.
