Chereads / The Regressor's Oath / Chapter 2 - Veil Of Truth

Chapter 2 - Veil Of Truth

Mikhail couldn't understand what was happening right now.

He had just entered this world, how the hell did he make an oath?

And what were all these blue interfaces in front of him?

He tried passing his hand through them but apparently, only he could see them.

It was all confusing for him.

However, he could at least make sense from what was written in the windows.

The first window showed his 'Essentia' or in other words, his elements.

He knew all of them so it was nothing new.

There were a total of 5 ranks for a mage.

Magus, Warden, Herald, Monarch, Archon.

The same ranks were used for elements. The rank indicated the highest rank for which you could execute spells from an element.

Any higher, and it would potentially risk your life.

Of course, your current rank as a mage was the actual rank you could only use spells for.

The element ranks just told you the limit.

However, having the Rosaryth for Otharis, there was no limit for Mikhail in that element.

It was one of the many benefits of a Rosaryth.

Moving on though, it was where everything made no sense.

The system or whatever it was had said that his regression assimilation was complete.

He didn't know what it was supposed to mean.

He had regressed but what did it mean by assimilation?

Did it mean that his soul had successfully merged with his past self or something else?

He doubted that was the case because if so, he would have got his memories back.

'I'll think about it later, I don't have enough time right now.'

He had to report outside.

Moving forwards was where it got even more confusing.

From the time that he got here till present, Mikhail couldn't remember a single second where he had even thought about making an oath.

What's worse was that he didn't even know the conditions for it.

But the penalty being [Death] was enough for Mikhail to know that it was a life-changing oath.

The bigger the oath, the higher you had to set the penalty for it.

And in all his previous life, Mikhail had never made an oath that required him to set the condition as his death.

The only clue he had to this oath was the window where it said [Low Character Progression].

From the words, he concluded that it could mean progression of this body.

And being new to this, he had no idea how to increase it so he could see the condition.

Except…

That last window that he had just seen.

The conditions and rewards made it seem like it was a mission of some sort.

Or a 'Chronicle' as the system termed it.

However, from what he could see currently, it was the only way to increase his character progression.

'And also his mana…?'

As he said it, a small interface opened up in front of him.

—————〔Information〕—————

• Character Progression 0%

• Mana: 6400/6400 [Dragma]

—————————————————–

'Oh.'

So it was just a numeric value of the mana he had.

There was nothing else in the window that he didn't know.

Dragma was just the ability a person was blessed with when awakening their Essentia.

For now, Mikhail moved back to the concerning part before he moved back outside.

The condition for the Chronicle.

It stated that he had to uncover the assassin and save the academy from getting destroyed.

Despite regressing, it wasn't like Mikhail remembered every detail from his previous life on what happened.

So he had to think.

'The year is 2093…think, think.'

Mikhail tried to remember any important events that happened in that year.

And instantly, the most nearest and most important one clicked in his mind.

The visit of the newly appointed Dominique.

And it was right around the corner.

If he remembered correctly, it was supposed to be April 13th. Just a week away from today.

'Hmm…'

Mikhail quickly set out to think.

Even though Dominique was visiting, it wasn't for this reason Mikhail considered it important.

No. In fact, Dominique used to visit an academy every year so it was normal.

It was because of the attack that would take place on the same day.

Mikhail could still remember it vividly as his squadron had come close to dying.

However, he couldn't remember any assassinations carried out that day on the Dominique.

Matter of fact, it was just a normal wormhole leakage.

The only difference on that day, was that there was multipl-

Click.

It instantly clicked in his mind.

The unusual amount of wormhole leakages that day…

They weren't just an accident.

No.

They were intentionally staged.

By someone right inside the academy.

A slight chill ran down Mikhail's spine but his expression remained calm and composed.

This wasn't the first time he was going through these situations.

It was true that the same event would happen again.

However, someone had a chance to change it this time.

And that was him.

Mikhail's gaze landed on his two pistols on the corner table in the tent.

He still didn't know what caused him to regress back here.

He didn't know why he had regressed back.

And honestly, he couldn't care less about everyone else in the camp besides his family.

But…

Mikhail picked his brown overcoat from the corner stand in the tent and flung it over his shoulder.

If these quests could bring him ever so slightly closer to knowing what was his purpose of regressing back in time then…

It was all worth it.

Strapping his guns to his waist, Mikhail moved outside.
