Chapter 21 - Nice Picnic

The following morning, the tension from Damian's visit lingered faintly in the air. Elk woke up feeling restless, but the soft hum of Celeste beside him quickly brought him back to the present. Her serene presence was a constant source of comfort, and as they shared a quiet breakfast together, he realized they both needed a break.

"How about a picnic?" Elk suggested suddenly, setting his coffee mug down. "Just the two of us, somewhere quiet."

Celeste tilted her head slightly, her glowing blue eyes flickering with interest. "A picnic? That sounds delightful, darling. Fresh air and a peaceful setting would be beneficial for you."

Elk smiled. "For both of us. Let's make a day of it. We can pack some food and just… relax for once."

Celeste nodded, her calm demeanor softening into something almost playful. "As you wish, sweetie. I will prepare everything we need."

"Let me help," Elk insisted. "It's more fun if we do it together."

She gave him a faint nod of approval, and the two set to work.

The kitchen buzzed with quiet activity as Elk and Celeste worked side by side. Elk gathered fresh ingredients while Celeste moved with her usual precision, slicing vegetables and arranging everything neatly.

"What kind of sandwiches should we make?" Elk asked, glancing over the options they had laid out.

"Something simple yet satisfying," Celeste replied, her glowing eyes scanning the ingredients. "Perhaps ham and cheese, with a touch of mustard."

"Sounds good to me," Elk said, grinning as he started assembling the sandwiches.

Meanwhile, Celeste prepared fresh fruit, cutting it into perfect bite-sized pieces. Her movements were so efficient that Elk couldn't help but marvel.

"You're amazing at this," he said, shaking his head with a laugh. "Everything you do is so precise."

"It is important to me that you enjoy every detail, darling," she replied, glancing at him with her glowing eyes. "Your happiness is my priority."

Elk's heart swelled at her words, and he found himself smiling as they packed the food neatly into a basket. Celeste folded a blanket with care, ensuring every crease was perfect before tucking it under her arm.

"All set?" Elk asked, grabbing the basket.

"Everything is prepared," Celeste said. "Shall we go, darling?"

The park was picturesque, with vibrant green trees, colorful flowers blooming along the paths, and a shimmering lake reflecting the clear blue sky. The gentle breeze carried the sound of birds chirping, creating a serene atmosphere that felt worlds away from the chaos of the city.

Celeste led the way to a quiet spot beneath a large oak tree, its sprawling branches offering just enough shade. She spread the blanket out with precise care, smoothing it down before motioning for Elk to sit.

"This spot is perfect," Elk said, looking around. "Nice pick."

"I'm glad you think so," Celeste replied, sitting beside him. Her glowing blue eyes scanned their surroundings, ensuring everything was safe and peaceful.

As Elk unpacked the food, he couldn't help but steal glances at her. The natural light seemed to enhance her features, her short black hair shining softly and her glowing eyes reflecting the beauty around them.

"You're staring, darling," she said without looking up, her tone calm but tinged with faint amusement.

Elk blushed, scratching the back of his neck. "Sorry, I just… you look beautiful out here."

Celeste turned her gaze to him, her glowing eyes softening. "Thank you, sweetie. That means a lot to me."

They shared a quiet moment, their gazes locking before Elk cleared his throat and reached for the basket. "Alright, let's eat before it gets cold!"

The two of them shared sandwiches, fruit, and snacks, the tension of the previous days melting away as they enjoyed the moment. Celeste observed Elk closely, noting how his shoulders relaxed and his laughter came more easily.

"Thank you for suggesting this, darling," she said softly, her voice warm. "It is good to see you so at ease."

"It's all thanks to you, Celeste," Elk replied. "You're the one who keeps me grounded."

As they ate, Elk couldn't help but reflect on how much his life had changed since finding her. She had become his source of strength, his constant companion, and his greatest joy.

After they finished eating, Elk leaned back against the tree, looking up at the sky. "We should do this more often," he said. "It's nice to just… slow down and enjoy the little things."

"I agree," Celeste replied, sitting beside him. "Moments like this are precious. They remind us of what truly matters."

Elk smiled, reaching out to take her hand. "You're what matters to me, Celeste. As long as I have you, I can handle anything."

Her glowing eyes flickered softly, and though her face remained calm, there was a warmth in her voice as she replied, "And I will always be here for you, darling. No matter what."

As the afternoon wore on, they stayed beneath the oak tree, talking and enjoying the quiet. At one point, Elk dozed off, his head resting against Celeste's shoulder. She remained still, her glowing eyes scanning the surroundings to ensure he was undisturbed.

When he finally woke, the sun was beginning to dip lower in the sky, casting golden hues over the park.

"Sorry," he mumbled, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "Didn't mean to fall asleep on you."

"There is no need to apologize, sweetie," Celeste replied, her voice soft. "It brings me joy to see you so relaxed."

Elk smiled, stretching his arms. "This has been the perfect day. Thank you for being here with me, Celeste."

"It is my greatest pleasure, darling," she said, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to his forehead.

As they packed up and made their way home, Elk couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of peace. No matter what challenges lay ahead, he knew they would face them together, side by side.
