Chapter 7 - Minjin and Physics

Minjin's curiosity flourished when she joined the Science Club. Surrounded by bright and enthusiastic students, she found a vibrant space packed with energy and ideas. Here, no question was too small, and no problem too big to tackle.

From the beginning, everyone in the Science Club recognized Minjin's natural talent for understanding complex concepts. She learned quickly, and her reputation as a "genius" soon spread throughout the club.

The other members soon encouraged her to represent their school in national competitions, recognizing her potential to significantly impact their school.

With Mr. Underwood, their science teacher, Minjin explored fascinating scientific experiments. They observed bubbling chemical reactions, built small circuits that lit up and studied the balance of ecosystems in the school garden.

Mr. Underwood's captivating stories about the giants of science included a memorable account of Albert Einstein. One afternoon in the science lab, he not only discussed Einstein's famous theories, like relativity and space-time but also shared details about his struggles and curiosity. Mr. Underwood painted a vivid picture of a man whose unique perspective and questions shaped modern science.

Minjin was then mesmerized.

"Did you know that Einstein envisioned riding a beam of light? This idea led him to consider how light travels and how time bends. It's about more than just numbers; it's about imagination," Mr. Underwood said.

Minjin's curiosity was sparked when she realized that physics went beyond calculations and facts—it was a way to understand the universe's mysteries. She began borrowing books on physics from the library and spent her weekends at the bookstore, surrounded by titles on black holes, quantum mechanics, and the cosmos.

Over the months, Minjin's curiosity transformed into a deep fascination with physics. She constantly thought about it—during meals, walking to school, and even at night. Her perspective shifted as she began to notice the physics in everyday phenomena, like the arc of a thrown ball and water spiraling down a drain.

Mr. Underwood recognized her growing interest and decided to mentor her. He guided her through advanced concepts, exploring Newton's laws, quantum physics, advanced calculus, and the equations that describe the universe. He encouraged her to ask questions, no matter how simple or complex.

As each day passed, Minjin's fascination with physics deepened. She felt on the verge of an important discovery and was no longer intimidated by her lack of knowledge. Physics ignited a new passion in her, making her heart race with excitement.

Minjin also loved music. When her homeroom teacher suggested she join the Glee Club, she happily accepted it. It quickly became one of her favorite places, where she met Tony Long, a talented Chinese-American guitarist.

Tony had a relaxed demeanor and a talent for putting people at ease. He often strummed his guitar, his fingers dancing across the strings, enchanting Minjin with the music.

One day, after practice, Minjin approached Tony with a shy smile. "Hey, Tony, could you teach me how to play the guitar?" she asked.

Tony smiled and said, "Of course! I'd love to help."

Their guitar lessons began after school in the music room, where Tony taught Minjin how to hold the guitar, the basic chords, and strumming techniques.

As time passed, their friendship grew stronger. Tony admired Minjin's dedication and curiosity while she appreciated his patience.

One afternoon, after an especially enjoyable lesson, Tony asked, "Hey, would you like to come for dinner sometime? My mom makes amazing dumplings, and I think you would really enjoy them."

Eager for new experiences, Minjin agreed to join Tony at his home for dinner. His family welcomed her warmly, and she enjoyed trying fragrant dumplings, spicy mapo tofu, and sweet sesame balls for the first time.

Curious, Minjin leaned over to Tony and whispered, "What are they saying?"

He chuckled softly and translated a few phrases, providing the context of their conversation.

After dinner, while they were clearing the dishes, Minjin turned to Tony with a grin and said, "Hey, how about teaching me a Chinese song during our guitar lessons next time?"

Tony smiled. "A Chinese song? I've got the perfect simple one to start with."

The next time they met, Tony brought a Mandarin song's lyrics and guitar chords. He patiently taught Minjin the pronunciation, laughing when she stumbled.

Minjin was fascinated by the song's melody and the complexity of the language. That night, she couldn't stop thinking about it.

Minjin sat at the dinner table and said to her parents, "Appa, I want to learn Mandarin."

Her parents looked surprised. "Mandarin? Why do you want to learn it now?"

Minjin smiled and shrugged. "I think it's an interesting language, and I want to try something new. Tony's family speaks it, and I thought it would be fun."

After thinking for a moment, her mother smiled. "We will support you if that's what you want. It's good to learn another language."

Her father nodded. "It might be useful someday."

The next Saturday, Minjin started her Mandarin lessons. She was in a small classroom with about twelve other students. At first, she felt nervous, but soon, she felt excited as the lessons began. The teacher taught the basics: the four tones, the characters, and simple phrases.

Each week, Minjin learned to recognize characters, practice tones, and write simple sentences. Her notebook was filled with rows of carefully written characters. In her free time, she practiced her pronunciation and sometimes hummed the Chinese songs that Tony had taught her.

As months passed, Minjin's confidence grew. She began to understand more of what Tony's family said at dinner and could even respond with simple Mandarin phrases. She felt proud of taking on this challenge and was thankful for Tony's friendship, which opened up a new world for her.
