Chapter 99 - The Aftermath 2

The first rays of dawn broke over the horizon, casting a soft golden light across the camp. Lin Xuan stood at the edge of the clearing, his gaze fixed on the distant mountains. The weight of the fragment pressed against his chest, not just a physical burden but a reminder of the responsibility he had taken upon himself.

Behind him, the camp stirred to life. Xiao Lan was sharpening her spear, her movements precise and focused. Fang Yun was busy inspecting their supplies, his sharp eyes catching every detail. Yun Xi prepared a simple breakfast, her gentle humming adding a sense of normalcy to the otherwise tense atmosphere.

Lin Xuan's mind, however, was far from the present. The encounter with Harrow and the mention of the Council of Shadows weighed heavily on him. Their enemies weren't just powerful—they were organized, resourceful, and relentless. He couldn't afford any mistakes.

Fang Yun approached, breaking Lin Xuan's thoughts. "You're up early," he said, his tone casual but his eyes sharp.

Lin Xuan nodded, his gaze never leaving the mountains. "I couldn't sleep. Too much on my mind."

Fang Yun followed his gaze. "The Council?"

"Among other things," Lin Xuan admitted. "We're walking a fine line, Fang Yun. One misstep, and we're done for."

Fang Yun's lips quirked into a faint smile. "When have we ever had the luxury of an easy path? You've led us through worse, Lin Xuan. This is just another challenge."

Lin Xuan finally turned to look at him, a glimmer of determination in his eyes. "And we'll face it. Together."

The two shared a brief moment of understanding before Yun Xi called them over. Breakfast was ready, and the group gathered around the fire to eat.

As they ate, Lin Xuan laid out his plan. "We can't afford to stay in one place for too long. The Council will be looking for us, and we're too exposed here. We need to keep moving."

Xiao Lan frowned. "Running isn't my style, Lin Xuan. If they want a fight, I say we give it to them."

"We're not running," Lin Xuan replied calmly. "We're repositioning. There's a difference. If we fight them on their terms, we lose. But if we choose the battlefield, we have a chance."

Yun Xi nodded thoughtfully. "Do you have a destination in mind?"

Lin Xuan hesitated for a moment before answering. "There's a place. An old ruin in the mountains. It's hidden, and its natural defenses will give us an advantage. But it's a long journey, and the path won't be easy."

Fang Yun's brows furrowed. "The Mountain of Shadows?"

Lin Xuan nodded. "You know it?"

"I've heard of it," Fang Yun said. "A dangerous place, filled with ancient traps and beasts. But if we can make it there, it could be the perfect stronghold."

Xiao Lan smirked. "Sounds like my kind of challenge."

Yun Xi looked less enthusiastic but nodded in agreement. "If it's our best option, then we'll make it work."

With their destination decided, the group began packing up the camp. Each member moved with purpose, their roles clearly defined. Lin Xuan felt a surge of pride as he watched them. They weren't just allies—they were his family, bound together by shared struggles and unwavering loyalty.

As they set out, the forest around them seemed to close in, the shadows growing darker with each step. The air was heavy, the silence oppressive. It was as if the land itself was warning them of the dangers ahead.

Lin Xuan led the way, his senses sharp. He could feel the fragment's energy pulsing faintly, a constant reminder of their mission. The others followed closely, their weapons ready, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger.

Hours passed, and the terrain grew more treacherous. The forest gave way to rocky paths, and the air grew thinner as they ascended. The group moved in near silence, their focus unwavering.

It wasn't until they reached a narrow ridge that the first sign of danger appeared. A low growl echoed through the mountains, sending a chill down their spines.

Lin Xuan raised a hand, signaling the group to stop. "We're not alone," he said quietly.

From the shadows emerged a pack of creatures, their forms barely visible in the dim light. They were lean and muscular, their fur a mottled gray that blended perfectly with the rocky terrain. Their eyes glowed with a sinister red light, and their movements were unnervingly silent.

"Mountain Stalkers," Fang Yun said, his voice low. "Predators. They hunt in packs, and they're relentless once they've marked their prey."

Xiao Lan tightened her grip on her spear. "Then let's make it clear who's the predator here."

Lin Xuan drew his sword, its blade catching the faint light of the setting sun. "Stay close. Watch each other's backs."

The first Stalker lunged, its movements impossibly fast. Lin Xuan met it head-on, his sword slicing through the air with precision. The creature dodged, its claws raking across his shoulder, but Lin Xuan countered with a powerful strike that sent it sprawling.

The others joined the fray, their coordinated attacks keeping the pack at bay. Xiao Lan's spear danced like a whirlwind, her strikes precise and deadly. Fang Yun's bow sang as he loosed arrow after arrow, each shot finding its mark. Yun Xi moved gracefully, her staff glowing with a faint light as she cast protective barriers and healing spells.

The battle was fierce, the Stalkers relentless, but the group held their ground. When the last creature fell, the ridge was silent once more.

Lin Xuan surveyed the battlefield, his chest heaving. "Is everyone alright?"

The others nodded, their exhaustion evident but their spirits unbroken.

"We'll need to move quickly," Fang Yun said. "The scent of blood will attract more predators."

Lin Xuan nodded. "Then let's not waste any time."

As they continued their ascent, Lin Xuan couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The Mountain of Shadows awaited, its secrets and dangers shrouded in mystery. But he knew one thing for certain: whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.

And they would prevail.
