Chapter 79 - The Guardian's Gate

Emerging from the oppressive valley, the group stepped into a new landscape. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine and wildflowers. Rolling hills stretched before them, dotted with ancient ruins and broken columns, remnants of a civilization long forgotten. At the center of this expanse stood an enormous gate carved from obsidian, its surface shimmering faintly in the sunlight.

The gate loomed ominously, its intricate carvings pulsating with a faint energy. Two towering statues of armored warriors flanked it, their stone gazes seeming to follow the group's every move.

---

"That must be the next trial," Yu Mei said, her voice tinged with weariness.

Xu Yan stretched his arms, his twin blades strapped across his back. "At least it's not more fog. I've had enough of creepy whispers to last a lifetime."

Li Fengxian's eyes narrowed as he examined the gate. "This place is different. It feels... alive."

Lin Xuan stepped forward, his hand instinctively resting on the hilt of his sword. "There's an aura here, strong and ancient. Be on guard."

---

As they approached, the air grew heavier, charged with a strange energy that prickled their skin. The carvings on the gate seemed to move, shifting and twisting as if responding to their presence. The group stopped a few paces away, unsure of how to proceed.

Yu Mei pointed to an inscription etched into the base of the gate. "Look there. It might be a clue."

Lin Xuan knelt to examine the text, his sharp eyes scanning the ancient script. The symbols were similar to those they had seen in the valley but more elaborate.

"It's a riddle," he said after a moment. 'Only those who possess wisdom, courage, and unity may pass. Prove your worth, or face the Guardian's wrath.'"

Xu Yan groaned. "Another test? Can't we just fight something and move on?"

Li Fengxian smirked. "Careful what you wish for."

---

Suddenly, a deep rumble echoed through the hills. The statues flanking the gate began to move, their stone joints grinding as they came to life. Their eyes glowed with a fiery light, and each raised a massive weapon—one a sword, the other a warhammer.

The ground trembled as the statues stepped forward, their immense size dwarfing the group.

"Looks like we're fighting after all," Yu Mei said, drawing her daggers.

Lin Xuan's expression was calm but focused. "This isn't just about strength. We need to outthink them. Stay sharp."

---

The statues moved with surprising speed for their size. The sword-wielding one lunged at Lin Xuan, its blade cutting through the air with a deafening whoosh. Lin Xuan dodged to the side, his own sword flashing as he deflected the attack. The impact sent a shockwave through the ground, nearly toppling Xu Yan.

Yu Mei circled behind the warhammer-wielding statue, her daggers seeking weak points in its stone body. She struck at the joints, but her blades barely scratched the surface.

"These things are tough!" she shouted, leaping back as the hammer came crashing down.

Li Fengxian joined the fray, his spear aimed at the statue's glowing eyes. The strike connected, shattering one of the orbs and causing the statue to stagger. "Aim for the eyes!" he called out. "It's their weak spot!"

---

The group coordinated their attacks, each playing to their strengths. Xu Yan and Yu Mei focused on distracting the statues, using their agility to evade and strike from unexpected angles. Li Fengxian's powerful thrusts targeted their vulnerable points, while Lin Xuan observed the battle, looking for an opportunity to end it.

"They're connected to the gate," Lin Xuan realized, his eyes narrowing. "If we disrupt the energy flow, they'll fall!"

He pointed to the carvings on the gate, which pulsed in time with the statues' movements. "Cover me. I'm going to sever the link."

---

While the others kept the statues occupied, Lin Xuan sprinted toward the gate. The energy radiating from it grew stronger as he approached, pressing against him like a physical force. His sword glowed as he channeled his spiritual energy, cutting through the resistance.

Reaching the base of the gate, he plunged his sword into the ground, sending a surge of energy through the carvings. The patterns writhed and twisted, their glow faltering.

The statues froze mid-attack, their movements jerky and uncoordinated. Taking advantage of the opening, Yu Mei and Xu Yan struck with precision, shattering their remaining weak points. The statues crumbled into piles of stone, their fiery eyes extinguished.

---

The gate groaned, its surface rippling as the energy within it settled. The carvings rearranged themselves, forming a new inscription.

Lin Xuan stepped back, breathing heavily. "It's done. Let's see what it says now."

Yu Mei joined him, reading aloud. "'The path forward is open to those who stand united. Step through, and may your bond remain unbroken.'"

The gate began to part, revealing a shimmering portal of light. Beyond it lay a dense forest, its towering trees glowing faintly with an ethereal light.

---

Xu Yan sheathed his blades, a grin on his face. "Finally, some progress. Let's get this over with."

Li Fengxian chuckled. "You say that now, but who knows what's waiting for us in there?"

Lin Xuan turned to the group, his gaze serious. "Whatever it is, we face it together. Let's move."

As they stepped through the gate, the light enveloped them, and the whispers of the valley faded into memory. With each challenge, their resolve grew stronger, their unity unshaken. But the trials ahead would test them in ways they could not yet imagine.
