Chapter 73 - The Forest

The glowing forest loomed ahead, its luminous trees casting eerie, shifting shadows. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and faintly sweet flowers, but beneath the beauty lay an unmistakable tension. Every sound—every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig—set their nerves on edge.

Lin Xuan held the shard tightly in his palm, its faint pulses synchronizing with his heartbeat. "Stay alert," he said softly, his voice barely audible over the ambient hum of the forest. "This place feels alive, and not in a welcoming way."

Li Fengxian hefted his spear, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "Alive or not, anything that tries to stop us will regret it."

Yu Mei gave him a sidelong glance. "Confidence is good, but overconfidence will get you killed here." She gestured toward a vine that moved unnaturally, slithering back into the underbrush as though it had been watching them.

---

They moved cautiously, their footsteps muffled by the mossy ground. The trees seemed to lean closer the deeper they ventured, their glowing trunks emitting a soft hum that resonated in their chests. The shard began to pulse faster, guiding them toward the forest's heart.

Xu Yan broke the silence, his voice tinged with unease. "Have you noticed the sounds? Or rather, the lack of them?"

Lin Xuan stopped, realizing Xu Yan was right. The forest, which had been alive with faint whispers and rustling moments before, had gone utterly silent.

"It's a trap," Lin Xuan said, his voice firm. "Prepare yourselves."

---

The ground beneath their feet trembled, and the glowing trees seemed to shudder in response. From the shadows, creatures began to emerge—beings made entirely of light and shadow, their forms shifting and amorphous. Their glowing eyes fixed on the group, and a low, guttural growl echoed through the forest.

Yu Mei's daggers were in her hands in an instant. "I knew this place wasn't as peaceful as it seemed."

One of the creatures lunged at her, its form stretching unnaturally as it closed the distance. She sidestepped gracefully, her dagger slicing through its body. The creature dissolved into sparks of light but reformed almost immediately.

"They can't be killed conventionally!" she shouted, her tone sharp with urgency.

---

Lin Xuan stepped forward, raising the shard. Its light flared, and the creatures recoiled, their forms flickering. But instead of retreating, they circled the group, their movements predatory and deliberate.

"They're testing us," Lin Xuan murmured. "This isn't just an attack—it's another trial."

Xu Yan slashed at an advancing creature, his blade passing harmlessly through its shifting form. "A trial? What kind of trial pits us against enemies we can't even hit?"

Lin Xuan closed his eyes, focusing on the shard. Its pulses grew stronger, syncing with the hum of the forest. A vision flickered in his mind—images of the glowing trees, their roots intertwining deep beneath the earth, forming a vast network.

"The forest is connected," he said, his voice calm despite the chaos. "The shard is showing me… their weakness lies in the roots."

---

Li Fengxian planted his spear in the ground. "Then we take out the roots. Simple enough."

Lin Xuan shook his head. "Not so simple. The roots are protected by the creatures. We'll need to divide our efforts—some of us hold them off while the rest strike at the source."

Yu Mei stepped up beside him. "I'll handle the creatures. Xu Yan, Li Fengxian—stay with me. Lin Xuan, if you've got a plan, make it quick."

Lin Xuan nodded, his gaze sharp. "The shard will guide me. Cover me until I can reach the roots."

---

The battle was intense. The creatures attacked relentlessly, their forms shifting and reforming with each blow. Yu Mei moved like a shadow, her daggers striking with precision, while Li Fengxian and Xu Yan used their weapons to hold the line.

Lin Xuan focused on the shard, its light forming a protective barrier around him as he moved deeper into the forest. The hum of the trees grew louder, almost deafening, as he approached a massive tree at the center of the forest. Its roots pulsed with light, spreading out like veins into the earth.

"This is it," he whispered, placing his hand on the tree's bark.

The shard reacted immediately, its light merging with the tree's glow. A surge of energy shot through Lin Xuan, and he felt the forest's consciousness—an ancient presence, both wise and wary.

"Why have you come?" a voice echoed in his mind, deep and resonant.

"We seek the shard's power," Lin Xuan replied, his tone resolute. "Not to destroy, but to protect."

---

The presence was silent for a moment, then spoke again. "The power you seek comes with a cost. Prove your worth."

The tree's roots began to writhe, and a surge of energy flowed through the forest. The creatures attacking his companions grew more aggressive, their movements faster and more coordinated.

Lin Xuan gritted his teeth, channeling his energy into the shard. Its light intensified, spreading through the roots and into the forest. The creatures froze mid-attack, their forms dissolving into harmless motes of light.

The presence spoke once more. "You have passed this trial, but your journey is far from over. Go forward, and may your resolve remain unbroken."

---

The light from the shard faded, and the forest returned to its quiet hum. Lin Xuan rejoined his companions, who were catching their breath and tending to minor injuries.

"Did it work?" Xu Yan asked, his voice tired but hopeful.

Lin Xuan held up the shard, its glow steadier and brighter than before. "We've unlocked the next piece of its power. But this forest was only the beginning."

Yu Mei sheathed her daggers, her expression grim. "If this was a test, I can't imagine what the final trial will be like."

Lin Xuan looked toward the horizon, where the forest gave way to towering mountains shrouded in mist. The shard pulsed in his hand, pointing them onward.

"Whatever lies ahead," he said, his voice firm, "we'll face it together."

The group pressed forward, their resolve strengthened by the trials they had overcome, but the weight of what lay ahead lingering heavily in their minds.
