Chapter 61 - Echoes of the Storm

The trio walked in silence through the dense forest that bordered the Hidden Sanctuary, their senses attuned to every sound and movement. Despite their victory over the Shadow Abyss Sect, an unspoken tension lingered among them. Each of them had experienced profound changes within the sanctuary—changes that had yet to settle.

The forest canopy grew denser as they ventured deeper, the light of the fading storm casting eerie shadows. Lin Xuan's gaze swept the surroundings, his sharpened instincts catching faint disturbances in the air. He raised a hand to signal a halt.

"We're being followed," he said, his voice low but steady.

Yu Mei and Li Fengxian immediately fell into defensive positions, their weapons ready. Yu Mei tilted her head slightly, listening for the faintest rustle of leaves or snap of twigs.

"Four... no, five," she murmured. "And they're skilled at hiding their presence."

Li Fengxian smirked, his grip on his spear tightening. "Skilled or not, they won't catch us off guard."

Lin Xuan nodded, his eyes narrowing. "We'll split up and surround them. They think they're the hunters, but they're about to become the prey."

The group moved silently, their steps as light as the wind. Lin Xuan circled to the left, his movements concealed by the shadows. Yu Mei vanished into the foliage, her presence so faint it was as if she had melted into the forest. Li Fengxian, ever the bold fighter, remained in plain sight, acting as bait.

Minutes passed in tense silence before the first attacker revealed themselves. A black-clad figure lunged at Li Fengxian from the treetops, wielding twin daggers that gleamed with a sickly green light.

"Poison," Li Fengxian muttered, dodging the strike with ease. "How unoriginal."

He retaliated with a sweeping strike of his spear, the golden energy crackling as it struck the attacker. The man barely managed to block the blow, but the force sent him crashing into the ground.

Before the others could react, Yu Mei struck from the shadows. Her daggers flashed, disarming one of the attackers with precision and leaving a deep cut across his arm.

Lin Xuan emerged from the opposite side, his sword slicing through the air with a hum. His first strike took one of the attackers by surprise, severing their weapon in half. The figure stumbled back, their expression one of shock.

"You should have stayed hidden," Lin Xuan said coldly, his blade reflecting the faint light filtering through the trees.

The battle was brief but intense. The attackers were skilled, but they underestimated the trio's newfound power and synergy. Lin Xuan's swordplay was swift and lethal, each strike calculated to end the fight quickly. Yu Mei moved like a shadow, her attacks precise and relentless. Li Fengxian's sheer strength and unyielding spirit overwhelmed their enemies, his spear a blur of golden light.

One by one, the attackers fell. The last remaining figure, realizing the futility of the fight, dropped their weapon and raised their hands in surrender.

"Mercy," the man gasped, blood dripping from a cut on his cheek. "We were only following orders."

Lin Xuan stepped forward, his expression cold and unyielding. "Whose orders?"

The man hesitated, his eyes darting nervously between the trio. "The Shadow Abyss Sect... they sent us to eliminate anyone leaving the sanctuary. They know you've obtained something valuable."

Yu Mei's eyes narrowed. "And how did they know we would be here?"

The man shook his head quickly. "I don't know! They have informants everywhere. Please, I've told you everything I know!"

Lin Xuan's grip on his sword tightened. He had no tolerance for loose ends, but he also knew that leaving a trail of corpses could attract more attention. He glanced at Yu Mei and Li Fengxian, gauging their thoughts.

"Let him go," Yu Mei said finally. "But mark him."

Li Fengxian grinned, stepping forward to carve a deep symbol into the man's arm with the blunt end of his spear. The man winced in pain but didn't resist.

"If we see you again," Lin Xuan said, his voice icy, "you won't get a second chance."

The man nodded frantically and fled into the forest, disappearing into the shadows.

As the trio regrouped, Yu Mei spoke, her tone serious. "The Shadow Abyss Sect won't stop. They've tasted blood, and now they'll want everything."

Lin Xuan nodded, his expression grim. "We need to move quickly. Staying in one place for too long will only make us easier targets."

Li Fengxian hefted his spear over his shoulder. "Let them come. We'll cut down anyone who gets in our way."

Despite his bravado, the tension was palpable. The Shadow Abyss Sect was a powerful force, and their interest in the sanctuary's secrets meant that the trio's journey would only grow more perilous.

As they resumed their journey, Lin Xuan's thoughts turned inward. The techniques he had learned in the sanctuary had made him stronger, but they also came with a weight of responsibility. His path was becoming clearer, but it was also fraught with danger.

The distant sound of thunder rumbled once more, as if the heavens themselves were watching.

For Lin Xuan, Yu Mei, and Li Fengxian, the storm was far from over.
