Chapter 174 - Chapter 174: Numbness

"Crazy!"

"They're all really crazy!"

Nicole and Penelope watched the dispersing crowd and finally realized what they had done before. For a moment, they were both shocked and angry, filled with disappointment, unable to accept it.

After fighting so hard for half a day, everyone had desperately protected them from harm, yet the ones they were protecting not only showed no gratitude but stabbed them in the back instead. This truly broke their hearts.

In the field, only Anna and Mulan remained relatively calm about this.

Anna, being a local, was well aware of the nature of the townspeople and found it unsurprising, so her reaction was quite subdued.

Mulan had a cold temperament; nothing could cause her emotions to fluctuate too much. She found the townspeople's behavior contemptible but it did not stir any strong feelings in her.

Zhao Lun, however, was angry. He was furious that these people dared to confront them; it was simply overestimating their own capabilities! How foolish!

If it weren't for Anna speaking up, he wouldn't have wanted to initiate this slaughter either. He was trying to control himself, and if he hadn't, he might have set that seemingly gentlemanly guy ablaze, turning him to ashes.

"There's nothing strange about this."

Zhao Lun expressed his understanding.

"Why?"

"When survival is threatened, a person's true nature will be revealed! In order to survive, they will disregard morals and everything else..."

"These people are almost mad! Is it worth it to get angry with these madmen?"

This was said for Nicole and the others to hear, but also for himself.

In a world filled with overwhelming information, there is nothing unusual that hasn't been seen or reported; it's just that seeing it often does not equate to experiencing it personally. Before, there was no feeling; now that he had gone through it himself, the feeling was naturally profound.

In this world, the hardest choice is death. How many people can face death calmly?

The townspeople had been ordinary folks facing such choices for almost four centuries. Those who managed to survive were likely those with the strongest desire to live, and perhaps they had already made some "wise" decisions long ago. Now, they were making such choices again for survival, which was understandable.

Zhao Lun could understand this. Understanding it didn't mean he wasn't also angry.

Even though they hadn't caused them any harm.

In the sky, there was a flash of lightning, and a few seconds later, a rumbling thunder followed, accompanied by a torrential downpour.

"Let's head back!" Zhao Lun said.

He had originally planned to attack the monster's nest today, but after the earlier events, he was already unhappy. Now, with the sudden thunderstorm, Zhao Lun decided to halt this action.

Let them suffer for another day! Zhao Lun couldn't help but have such a thought.

He didn't like the residents of this town at all. If it weren't for the effects on his family, he wouldn't have stayed to save them; after all, he wasn't some kind of saint.

The group temporarily halted their actions and returned to Anna's house.

The heavy rain continued to pour down. It should have been daytime, but it had turned dark again. Even if it stopped momentarily, it was still pitch black outside.

The terrible weather made Nicole and the others feel a bit agitated. Being newcomers, apart from Anna, the townspeople were very unfriendly, making her dislike this place even more.

If things had gone according to her wishes, they would have come here, smoothly dealt with the monsters, and then returned home. Reality, however, was full of twists and turns, not aligning with her desires.

At the moment, the quietest was Mulan, who was staring blankly in one direction.

"What are you looking at?" Zhao Lun asked.

"That mountain... it's very evil," Mulan pointed and said.

It was dark over there, and nothing could be seen clearly.

"Yeah, I know." Zhao Lun replied.

While others couldn't see, Zhao Lun could discern some extraordinary things with just a glance. The place Mulan pointed to was exactly the monster's nest they were supposed to go to. In that direction, the clouds were swirling, and malevolent energy was erupting, appearing as if an evil monster was about to emerge, making it impossible not to take it seriously.

"One monster died today; it might have angered the boss inside," Zhao Lun said.

As night fell, the mournful howls of wolves outside the town reappeared.

"They're back!"

The familiar howls quickly alerted Anna.

"Yes, they're back! They must be scouting the situation to avenge the deceased vampire bride, Mariska!"

"But the moon tonight seems really full!"

"The moon! So full!"

Zhao Lun approached the window and looked up at the sky. Among the dark clouds, a bright round moon hung high.

"This situation seems off; why has the moon been so full these past few days?"

"Don't talk about the moon; we have trouble tonight."

"Trouble? Are you talking about the moon?"

"Not entirely, half of it. Werewolves will be harder to deal with because of this moon. Tonight is a full moon, the worst time to control them. They might come here to cause trouble, so you all need to be careful!"

Werewolves are uncontrollable chaotic beings; even the strongest-willed werewolf will lose their reason and turn into a vicious beast on a full moon, driven by destructive desires, causing chaos in the world.

On a full moon, except for a few werewolves, almost all will be controlled by their beastly nature.

Zhao Lun found this world perplexing; full moon nights kept appearing, and due to the thick clouds, there were few moments when they could see the moon.

"Are you saying that tonight, werewolves will come to cause trouble!?"

"Yes, but with us here, the werewolves won't escape."

"What do we need to do?"

"We don't need to do anything; just wait."

"Just wait?!" Anna shot him a glance and then began preparing to welcome the guests of the night.

At that moment, Frankenstein also emerged. Hearing about the arrival of the blood-sucking monster made him very uneasy. Even though he knew Zhao Lun and the others had eliminated one, it didn't alleviate his fears; he was even more terrified.

"You guys better let me go! Or kill me!"

Dracula had left a significant shadow over him. Even witnessing Zhao Lun and the others' performance didn't ease his worries, and he couldn't even enjoy the delicious dinner.

"We were originally going to eliminate it today, but with the arrival of the blood-sucking monster... it's good that these little monsters have come; after we handle the 'guests,' we can go meet this count," Zhao Lun said.

As they spoke, the dark clouds dispersed, and a bright moon illuminated the small town.

On such a beautiful night, no one came out—oh! Someone did come out! A gentleman in a top hat was quietly digging a pit. Apart from him, the entire town was silent.

Awooo!——

A long wolf howl made the entire town tremble. Zhao Lun felt as if the townspeople shrank back at that sound, holding their breath, not daring to make a sound.

Several people's eyes lit up, and they quickly got to their feet, silently preparing for action. (To be continued.)
