Chapter 1 - A Failure

"This boy has no potential- He is useless". The cold words of the examiner was like a crisp slap on Ray's face.

The condescending look of scorn and a subtle grin of mockery, was like a sharp knife edging itself deep into Ray's heart.

"But..but how!"

"Oh stop your yelling lad, and get out of line, don't make ACTUAL potential gifted ones wait". The man sneered; the scorn visible on his face as he looked at Ray. And with a causal wave of his hand, Ray found himself outside the building.

Ray's eyes, once brimming with hope and energy, now lay empty and hollow. His gazing assessing the building that seemingly decided his destiny and future path in this life.

After war broke out between the gods, many years ago, the inhabitants of earth suddenly gained abilities, each ranging from well F- Rank, all the way to the legendary SSS- Rank. These individuals were referred to as..Gifted.

With these abilities, humans were able to break the limits and transcend to be come "gods". But everything comes with a cost. The large influx of energy from a world above, bright upon large spatial fissures that monsters; creatures from the underworld used to breach into Earth.

Of course with these new abilities, Earth defended. Although defence came at a cost. Loss of millions of lives.

But well, a small price to pay for salvation.

With more deaths, and more struggles, gifted ones grew; harnessing their abilities and were eventually able to push these "creatures of hell", as they called it, back.

The classes that stood up for humanity: The mages, or magicians, also known as an archmage, magus, magic-user, spellcaster, enchanter/enchantress, sorcerer/sorceress, warlock, witch, or wizard. Beings capable of harnessing energy from nature. Be it the common elements like Air, Water, Wind, or earth , or the uncommon elements like Lightening, Plant, Healing, Fire. The Rare Elements like Darkness or Light. The legendary Elements like Chaos and and Order. Or the Mythical elements like Space, Time

, Fate and Karma. Theses beings focus on high explosive power hut with a weak body build.

Next, were the:

Archers; masters of the bow an arrow. Capable of dealing massive long range damage to enemies alongside their counterparts:- The Assassin's.

Assassin is a character who is trained and skilled to kill. Beings capable of high explosive melee damage unlike the long range Archers.

However like the mages, have low defence although their strength lies in speed.

Next!

The swordsman. A being equipped with attributes made for defence, speed and agility. While leaving no way for magical abilities. Beings who have become one with the sword and capable of welding any melee weapon. Although blessed swordsmen are capable of awakening elements. Although energy to use them is low.

And Lastly the Tanks!

Humans with bulk like build. Capable of ramming houses, buildings, heck! Even mountains to the ground.

With medium grade explosive power and magic ability, nature makes up for it with a nigh- impenetrable defence. The perfect cannon folder, as one would call them.

_______

Ray Skimmed through his memories as his gaze lingered on the tall dark building of the Test House. All he hoped and dreamt for was to awaken an ability. Even if it was a somewhat weak one; even if it was an F-Rank. At least his life would have been a tad bit better than whatever shit hole he was going to call "life" when he eventually returned back to his home.

'My plan was set!' Ray thought.

His goal,? Awaken a talent, find a grade F fissure and kill some damned cretaures. Sell their cores, make some money, buy some sick gears, go back! Kill some more monsters, rinse and repeat.

And after a few years, say five or six,...he would settle down, have a kid or two, and live happily ever after.

Yeah...not the best plan- but it was all he wanted. The life of an orphan from birth made him not wish for too much lest he be disappointed.

'i still did wish for more though, didn't I'. Ray thought. As tears threatened to flow form his already hollow eyes. He was betting on awakening and proving everyone wrong- that he wouldn't end up as just that- An orphan!

But what did he get, lady luck laughed at him and spat on him. The insults and scorns from his torturers from his 'humble abode' played out in his head; like a broken radio that refused to stop.

'You are a failure'

'A disappointment '

' A disgrace'

'Worthless'

'Lowlife'

He endured to make these people cower in fear upon his return. To shove these words they said up their ass.

But now...

"AGGHHHHHH!!"

Ray screamed. His leg connecting with a small rock lying on the ground in a bid to send it flying of into the distance in a way to calm his grieved and broken heart. But such scene did not occur. Rather,

'CRACK'

The sound of bones being shattered rang out. As another ear splitting scream rang out.

"AGGGHHH!"

Grabbing his foot- or what was left of it, Ray begrudgingly started limping off. The weight of today's activities while heavy on his mind, the pain he felt right now was even worse.

' I can't go back to that shit hole

Those people would skin me alive

I won't survive if I go back'.

"Fuck it".

'I need to get myself healed up then make my way to the bar or something.

You can't feel pain if you're dead drunk can you?'

Subtly chuckling to himself at his crude on -the-spot joke.

Ray managed to drag his body into a nearby infirm.

"Hello sir, how may I hel-". The receptionist, visibly busy with her work, gazed up to see the person she had managed to sense immediately he entered.

But upon a quick scan with her ember eyes. Her gaze turned cold. - with a subtle hint of initiation. 'How dare this filth stain my eyes with his presence'.

Of course with a tattered shirt, torn trousers and with holes in his shoes, and a body reeking of foul odour, Ray was not exactly pleasing to the eye. And although he knew that. He was not that financially independent to do anything about it. Heck, he had only 30 bronze coins to his name. He wasn't broke

..

He was poor!

Quickly masking her irritation and trying to revert to her usual polite manner she had before. She strained a smile and continued.

"Sir, what may i help you with".

Ray, already noticing her visible scorn and disdain in her eyes- a common occurrence to him at this point, locked eyes with this receptionist who painstakingly tried to pull her facade together.

With a scoff at her tone she tried to hide, Ray simply pointed to his leg.

"It's broken". He said simply.

"Oh" came the word of the receptionist.

"No need to disturb the higher ups about this, I alone am enough" She said. Pride visible in her tone.

Simply stretching her hands, she shot a green stream of healing energy towards Ray leg. The bones destroyed and broken, mending themselves in a way that looked like time reversed.

Ray was in awe. 'this is more powerful than Becky own powers in the orphanage' Ray thought. His thoughts drifting towards a Chestnut golden eye girl in his orphange who awakened a healing ability.

"It is done". The receptionist smiled, or at least tried to; the underlying scorn in her tone suggested she wanted nothing more than for Ray to get his smelly ass out of this establishment.

Ray, not giving two shits either, simply walked off. His feet, now back to normal, he had no reason to remain in front of that rash woman.

'On to the bar!' Ray thought. His hand reaching for the infirm door when a loud alarm flared. Red light illuminating the room in a frenzied manner. In an instant, the door locked. And the shout of a woman made Ray snap his neck back in fury.

The receptionist, now with a face red with anger, shouted.

"You dare treat our infirm as a charity centre?,

Pay up you damn theif".
