Chapter 7 - °•° Forest Chapter 1 °•°

Evalith's heart pounded in her chest. Her fingers trembled, her powers flickering weakly, but the guardian's presence seeped into her very soul. She could feel the truth in its words—this was no ordinary trial. This was the beginning of something far greater, something she couldn't walk away from.

Kael fought alongside the king, both of them slashing through the advancing wolves, but even they could see the growing desperation in their position.

The magical creatures were relentless, tearing at their defenses, cutting through soldiers with ease. Lives fell—some to the claws, others dragged into the shadows by unseen forces. Blood stained the once-pristine forest grass.

The air thickened—filled with a tangible fear, the kind that gnawed at their minds and hearts. Every attack seemed to drain more than just energy—it drained hope, leaving nothing but a lingering dread. Eryndor's face was pale, beads of sweat gathering on his brow as he continued to chant, holding the ancient book before him, but even his power was faltering against the sheer strength of the creatures.

"This...this isn't a fight we can win alone!" Kael shouted, spinning his sword in a wide arc, cutting down several wolves, but more kept flooding in. "We need to retreat—find shelter!"

"No!" the king roared, his eyes blazing with defiance. "We cannot retreat! The kingdom's fate rests on our shoulders. We press forward—or die trying!" His voice boomed through the forest, but even his words were met with growing doubt among the soldiers.

Suddenly, the guardian moved—not toward them, but deeper into the shadows of the Forbidden Forest. Its presence lingered, watching, waiting. The soldiers exchanged confused glances—what was it planning?

"Its power—it's retreating!" Eryndor gasped, staring after the creature. "It's waiting to test us further. This isn't over. It's gauging our resolve…our will to continue!"

The realization hit like a cold wind. The guardian didn't want to destroy them immediately—it wanted to see how far they would go, whether they had the strength to press deeper into the forest. And with every step forward, more challenges would come—not just physical but emotional, moral.

The true price wasn't just survival, but what they would have to sacrifice to claim the book and unlock the power within.

The king gritted his teeth, his face hardening as he surveyed the scattered bodies of fallen soldiers—men and women who had given their lives. "This…this will not be in vain!" His voice echoed across the darkened clearing. "We will prevail! We will find that book, and we will save our kingdom!"

Eryndor approached cautiously, still clutching the cursed book. His eyes scanned the battlefield, dark with worry, but his mind focused on the next move. "Your Majesty…we can't do this without more strength. The prophecy…we must have more than courage. We need clarity, precision, and strategy."

The king turned sharply to him. "What do you mean?"

"There's a power in the Forbidden Forest… something beyond even this guardian," Eryndor explained. "But we must tread carefully—this forest is alive, and it won't give up its secrets without a cost."

"And what cost would that be?" the king asked, his voice low and dangerous.

"It will require a blood sacrifice—one that even your own daughter may not escape from." Eryndor's words hung heavy in the air, like the portent of doom. "The forest… it demands balance. The guardian isn't the only force here. The very roots of the Forbidden Forest have their own price—one that may very well alter the fate of the kingdom."

The king's fists clenched, his face grim. "So be it. If blood is the price, then we will pay it—none will stand in the way of saving my people. We will uncover this forest's secrets, no matter what it takes."

Evalith, hearing her father's words, felt her heart twist. She stepped forward, her voice steady despite the tremors in her legs. "Father… I will not stand by and let you sacrifice anyone. If blood must be spilled, then it will be mine—but I will not allow others to die in my place."

The king's gaze softened slightly, but there was steel behind his eyes. "You are brave, daughter… but this is the cost we must bear. If the forest calls for blood, it will be yours—unless we find another way."

"But what if there is no other way?" Eryndor asked softly, fear seeping into his voice. "If the prophecy is true, if this forest has already marked its path… what chance do we truly have?"

The king looked toward the horizon, where shadows stretched endlessly beyond the forest's edge. The darkness called to them—darker forces lurking deeper within. He knew that this was only the beginning of a journey far greater than he could have ever imagined.

"We must press on," the king declared. "Every step forward… every choice we make… will shape the fate of our kingdom. And we will face whatever comes—together."

With that, the group—king, princess, prophet, and surviving soldiers—pressed forward into the heart of the Forbidden Forest. The land was not simply a labyrinth of trees and shadows, but something alive—watching, waiting, hungering for what they sought.

The real trials had only just begun...
