Chapter 1 - Perhaps there is a second chance

'What led up to this?'

These were his thoughts. He didn't know what else to think at this moment. It was a complex situation indeed. After all, humans value their lives. But he did not. Not anymore at least.

'At least this is for the better… whatever that may be.'

He was unsure of many things in life. He had yet to experience a lot of things that life had to offer. He was too young to have such thoughts… Still being young has nothing to do with intelligence. Being young has nothing to do with experience. Being young doesn't protect you from cruelty, despair, pain, loss… Life is unfair. He knew that better than anyone else.

'What a funny result. I am still too naive perhaps. I was such an idiot back then. Thinking that I would finally be free, me out of all people.'

He didn't know why he had such thoughts at this moment. Was it guilt, sadness, complain. He did not know. He also did not care to know at this moment.

'Yet here I am. On the verge of death, rethinking my life. Once a human always a human as they say heh. How pathetic…'

That was right. He was going to die. Alone with no one to mourn for him, no one to remember him and with nothing to leave behind to be remembered. Absolutely nothing. But why?

He was not injured, not suffering from any diseases and he was young. He had his whole life ahead of him. So why was he on the verge of death?

It was complicated to explain. His situation was a mess. A mess he did not wish to clean up. So he was going to run away from that mess. He was going to escape and be free from it. How? How else of course.

He looked towards the ground. It was far as it was supposed to be. Being on the rooftop of a 20 story building was high and the ground was supposed to be far below of course.

'That should do it, I hope…'

He did not like to hope. There was no point in hoping. It never resulted in anything good. But he did not care at this point if it would result in anything at all. He was going to jump and die. Who would stop him? Why would anyone stop him?

'Even if I fail to die I will try again so there is no point in overthinking it. Just jump already…'

As he thought that he took a step forward. A step towards the unknown. He had taken such steps in the past hoping to reach something better. Hoping for a better life. That never happened. But today he wasn't hoping for anything better. He just wanted to fall and leave this place once and for all. Was the world going to unfulfill that wish for him?

Well, he was going to find out. After all there was nothing to support him in front of him. So after that step he fell.

'This is it huh? What a waste…'

He was falling. These were his last moments in life. After that death was awaiting him. He was ready to face him. He didn't fear death. So this should be alright. Right?

He fell lower and lower.

Deeper and deeper.

Towards the… void!?

'What the…'

He was supposed to be falling towards the ground. No he was supposed to have hit the ground already. He was also sure that there were buildings around him. So where did they go? Where did the ground fall? Was he falling at all?

So many questions rose to his head. Answers and speculations rose too. But he was unsure. How could he be sure?

He was falling or perhaps floating in an empty void. He couldn't see anything around him. He could feel the air around him indicating that he was falling. So was he dead? Was this the so-called afterlife? An empty void with nothing but yourself in it?

He was uncertain. Uncertain if he died or not. Uncertain if this was supposed to be the afterlife or just a part of it. But he was also confused about all this. The void, the fact that he was floating and more importantly the fact that he still had a body, clothes and basically everything he fell with was still with him. Why?

"What a… confusing situation…"

He didn't know what else to say at this point. What else was there to say?

"Confusing indeed."

His eyes widened as he looked around. Someone spoke and it was not him this time. He was surprised to hear someone else speak. Were there other people in the void?

As he looked around, he spotted a distant figure floating a safe distance away from him. That figure seemed to belong to a human, a male to be more specific. He looked young, around the age of 16, he had silver hair and had pure white skin. His clothes were also white with a bit of gray here and there. His eyes were also white surprisingly and also not so surprisingly. He was also very handsome at a point that some may question if he was the same species as a human.

'How can there be someone else here?'

That and lots more questions rose to his head while looking at the strange person in front of him.

Before he could say anything though to respond the other party spoke again.

"Did I scare you that much? You seem a lot more lively now considering you were about to commit suicide, don't you agree?"

His tone was rather… comical? He spoke as if he was accustomed to being in the middle of nowhere with a stranger as company.

'How does he know that I was about to off myself? Is this thing his doing? Is he the one who got me here? How did he even manage to get me here? Is he a human?"

Questions, questions and questions. Only more and more questions kept rising to his head with no answers. He couldn't understand what was going on and could only speculate at this point. Or ask.

Not wanting to make the other party wait he responded.

"Why am I here?"

There were lots of questions he could ask but he decided to go with this one. Asking about the future is more useful than about the present at this point. A few minutes ago he thought he didn't have any left after all…

The other party smiled after hearing the question.

"Cutting straight to the case. As expected of you. I always make the right choices after all."

'Choices? What choices is he talking about?'

He decided to go ahead and ask.

"Right choices?"

"That's right! I, Zero chose a mortal to get a second chance! Who in this case is you!"

He frowned as he heard that.

'Second chance? You gotta be kidding me?'

But this wasn't new to him. He was used to experiencing such unexpected events in life. Life never treated him fair. It was no surprise that death would never treat him fair too, wasn't it?

'I can't even kill myself now huh? How fucking great! I bet I must be so goddamn lucky!'
