Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Beneath the Surface

The city bustled with its usual chaos, but Jiang Xia's mind was elsewhere. The notebook left by her father had stirred something deep within her—a combination of dread, curiosity, and a growing determination. She couldn't shake the feeling that her father's disappearance and the Rift Project were inextricably linked. What had he uncovered, and why had it cost him his life?

She stepped into the elevator at Envision Technologies, her pulse quickening as the floors ticked by. It was 9:30 a.m., and she was already dreading the day ahead. After her encounter with the shadowy man the previous night, she couldn't help but feel she was being watched. The office, once a space of productivity and focus, now felt suffocating, every corner hiding a potential threat.

A Meeting of Shadows

As she reached her desk, her colleague Wei Lin leaned over the partition. His casual demeanor couldn't hide the curiosity in his eyes.

"Did you hear?" he asked.

"Hear what?" Jiang Xia replied, already booting up her computer.

"There's some kind of security lockdown happening in the lower levels. Nobody's allowed down there without clearance."

Jiang Xia stiffened. The lower levels were where the Rift Project's experiments were supposedly conducted. She had never been granted access, but now, with her father's notes fresh in her mind, the restricted areas seemed to call to her like a siren's song.

"Any idea why?" she asked, feigning disinterest.

Wei Lin shrugged. "Probably something to do with that secret project. Rift something? Whatever it is, they've got the higher-ups on edge."

Before Jiang Xia could respond, her computer chimed with a calendar notification. It was another meeting—this time, with Mr. Gao himself. The subject line was cryptic: "Strategic Briefing: Project Implementation."

She clenched her fists under the desk. If Mr. Gao wanted to involve her further in the Rift Project, she needed to tread carefully.

The Briefing

The boardroom was dimly lit when Jiang Xia arrived, the atmosphere oppressive. Mr. Gao stood at the head of the table, his commanding presence dominating the room. Behind him, the massive digital screen displayed swirling patterns of energy—undoubtedly a visualization of the Rift.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Mr. Gao began, his voice calm yet brimming with authority. "We are on the cusp of a breakthrough. The Rift Project has advanced beyond our expectations, and with your help, we will bring this vision to life."

Jiang Xia's stomach churned. She kept her expression neutral, but her mind raced as Mr. Gao continued.

"Our tests have confirmed that the Rift is stable enough for controlled access. Soon, we will be able to harness its potential, not just for exploration but for reshaping our world."

He gestured to the screen, where an abstract diagram of the Rift's structure appeared. Jiang Xia's eyes widened. It was eerily similar to the sketches in her father's notebook. Her heart pounded as she took in the intricate web of lines and nodes, each labeled with cryptic terms like "Temporal Anchor" and "Dimensional Convergence."

"Ms. Jiang," Mr. Gao said, his gaze locking onto hers. "Your expertise will be crucial in shaping public perception. The world must see the Rift as a beacon of progress, not a threat."

Jiang Xia nodded mechanically, her thoughts a whirlwind. Public perception? Was he planning to announce the Rift to the world? The implications were staggering—and terrifying.

A Glimpse Behind the Curtain

The meeting ended, but Jiang Xia lingered in the hallway outside the boardroom, her mind buzzing with questions. She needed answers, and there was only one place she could think to start: the lower levels.

That night, she waited until the office was nearly empty. She slipped into the stairwell, her heart pounding with each step downward. The air grew cooler as she descended, and the hum of machinery grew louder, filling the silence with an almost hypnotic rhythm.

When she reached the lowest level, a heavy metal door blocked her path. A keypad glowed faintly beside it, demanding an access code. Jiang Xia hesitated. She had no clearance, but she had prepared for this. Taking a small device from her bag—a hacking tool she had borrowed from an old contact—she connected it to the keypad and prayed it would work.

After a few tense moments, the keypad beeped, and the door slid open with a hiss. Jiang Xia stepped inside, her breath catching as she took in her surroundings.

The room was massive, filled with towering machines and glowing screens. At the center stood a circular platform, surrounded by a swirling vortex of light—the Rift itself. It was both beautiful and menacing, an otherworldly phenomenon that seemed to pulse with life.

Jiang Xia approached cautiously, her eyes fixed on the Rift. She felt a strange pull, as if it were calling to her. But before she could get closer, a voice startled her.

"You shouldn't be here."

She spun around to see a man emerging from the shadows. He was tall and lean, with sharp features and piercing eyes. It was the same man who had confronted her outside the office.

"Who are you?" Jiang Xia demanded, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her chest.

The man smirked. "A friend, if you'll let me be. My name is Qin Chuan. I used to work on the Rift Project—before I realized what it truly was."

"What are you talking about?" Jiang Xia asked, narrowing her eyes.

"The Rift isn't just a doorway," Qin Chuan said, stepping closer. "It's a weapon. A tool for manipulation, not discovery. The people running this project don't want to explore—they want to control."

Jiang Xia's mind raced. Could this man be telling the truth? And if so, what did it mean for her father?

---

The Truth Unveiled

Qin Chuan gestured for her to follow him, and they moved to a quieter corner of the room. There, he produced a tablet and began showing her files—schematics, reports, and video footage. Each piece of evidence painted a chilling picture.

"They've been conducting experiments for years," Qin Chuan explained. "Not just on objects, but on people. Volunteers, they called them, but most didn't know what they were signing up for."

Jiang Xia's hands trembled as she scrolled through the files. The reports detailed strange phenomena: people vanishing, others returning from the Rift disoriented and broken, their memories fragmented.

"My father…" she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "Was he one of them?"

Qin Chuan hesitated before nodding. "Jiang Yuan was one of the first. He was brilliant—one of the few who truly understood the Rift. But when he realized what they were planning, he tried to shut it down. That's when he disappeared."

The weight of his words hit her like a tidal wave. Her father hadn't just been a victim—he had been a martyr, sacrificing himself to stop something far larger than he could control.

A Plan Takes Shape

Jiang Xia took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. "If what you're saying is true, we have to stop them."

Qin Chuan nodded. "I've been working on a plan, but I can't do it alone. The Rift is too complex, and the security around it is nearly impenetrable. But with your access and my knowledge, we might have a chance."

Jiang Xia glanced back at the swirling vortex, its light reflecting in her eyes. "What do we need to do?"

"First, we need to gather evidence," Qin Chuan said. "Enough to expose them to the world. Then, we find a way to shut the Rift down for good."

"It won't be easy," Jiang Xia said, her voice firm. "But I'm in."

The First Step

As they exited the lower levels, Jiang Xia felt a renewed sense of purpose. The answers she had been seeking her entire life were within reach, but so were the dangers that had claimed her father.

The battle for the truth had begun, and Jiang Xia knew there was no turning back.
