Chapter 35 - The Price of Eternity

The air grew thick with the unspoken tension as the companions stood in the heart of the Forgotten Realm. Erynn clutched the hourglass tightly, its glow dimming as though it, too, sensed the weight of the decision ahead. The figure had disappeared into the swirling void, leaving only their cryptic words echoing in the silence.

Kaelis stepped closer to him, her golden eyes burning with concern. "Erynn..." Her voice was softer than usual, almost hesitant. "What do you think it meant? The choice."

Erynn stared at the hourglass, his fingers tracing the edges of the ancient artifact as he tried to process the implications of what they had just heard. Time, the key to their victory and the very thing they were fighting against, had been placed in his hands. But the price what price would he have to pay?

"I don't know," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "But we can't stop here. We have to push forward. Whatever this choice is… we'll face it together."

Braegor grunted, rubbing the back of his neck. "You're not alone in this, lad. We've all been through hell and back. We'll stand with you, whatever comes."

Isla nodded, her usual sharpness gone in the face of this unknown terror. "We've made it this far. We're not backing down now."

Orion's eyes, glowing faintly with arcane light, shifted from the hourglass to Erynn. "But we must understand the stakes. Time is the foundation of all things, but it's also the most fragile. If the hourglass is truly what the figure says it is, then whatever choice Erynn makes could change everything not just for us, but for the entire multiverse."

Kaelis' gaze softened as she stepped closer to Erynn. "We know you, Erynn. You wouldn't let anything destroy what we've fought for. But you don't have to make this choice alone."

Erynn looked at the hourglass one last time, its faint pulse growing in rhythm with his heartbeat. As he turned the glass over in his hands, a sudden surge of memories hit him faces of people he had loved and lost, battles fought and won, and a future that hung in the balance. The weight of it all was almost unbearable. How could one decision, one choice, change everything?

His grip tightened. "I can't do this alone."

"No one is asking you to," Kaelis said softly, her voice steady despite the chaos swirling around them. "But you must make the final call. We trust you."

For a moment, everything around them seemed to fade, leaving only Erynn and Kaelis in the heart of the Forgotten Realm. Her golden eyes locked with his, a depth of understanding passing between them. No words were necessary they had both seen the same things, felt the same fears.

Kaelis stepped closer, reaching for his hand. "Whatever happens, we'll face it together. You don't need to carry this alone, Erynn. Not anymore."

Erynn's heart thudded painfully in his chest. For all the times they had fought together, stood side by side, this was different. This moment, the decision hanging before them, was a choice that no one could make but him.

But in that moment, the weight of the choice wasn't just about time it was about the people who had become his family, the ones who had stood by him, and the love that had grown between them all. Kaelis, who had once been a force of fire and fury, had become someone he couldn't imagine life without.

With a trembling hand, he reached for her, pulling her into an embrace. Her warmth, the heat of her flames that had always burned so fiercely, was the grounding force he needed in the storm of uncertainty.

"I don't know what will happen," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "But I do know one thing."

"What's that?"Kaelis asked, her voice soft against his ear.

"I can't lose you," he said, his voice breaking. The words hung in the air between them, raw and vulnerable.

Kaelis' heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her chest. She pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, her golden gaze searching his face. "Erynn... you won't lose me. No matter what happens, I'll be here. We'll face this together."

For a long moment, the world around them stood still. The constant rumble of the Forgotten Realm, the swirling chaos of time itself all of it faded into the background. It was just the two of them, their hearts beating in unison, their souls intertwined in a bond that had only grown stronger with time.

But as the moment passed, a cold wind swept through the expanse, reminding them of the peril that still loomed. The decision had to be made. Time was slipping away.

Erynn turned to face the group, his resolve hardening. "We move forward. Whatever this choice is, we make it together. I trust all of you now more than ever."

Braegor gave him a nod of approval. "Let's get this done, then. Whatever the cost."

Isla smirked, though there was a weariness in her eyes. "We've been through worse, right? At least this time, we know what we're fighting for."

Orion raised their staff, the runes glowing brighter as they stepped forward. "The path ahead is uncertain. But we have the strength to face it. Together."

With a final glance at Kaelis, Erynn nodded. He felt the weight of the hourglass, its sands stirring restlessly. He had to make the decision, and there was no turning back.

As they walked deeper into the heart of the Forgotten Realm, the very air seemed to shift, thick with the weight of time itself. The shadows around them stretched and writhed, reaching toward them as though trying to hold them in place. But they pressed on, their resolve firm.

Suddenly, the ground began to crack beneath their feet, splitting wide open, revealing a chasm that stretched into the void. A light shone from below, radiating a warmth that seemed to beckon them.

"The choice is here," Orion said quietly, raising their staff toward the chasm. "You must decide, Erynn."

Erynn stood at the edge of the chasm, his heart racing. The moment had come. The path forward lay before him, but the consequences of his decision were still unclear. The hourglass pulsed in his hands, its glow brighter than ever, urging him to choose.

Kaelis stepped up beside him, her hand brushing his, grounding him. "Whatever you choose, we're with you."

Erynn took a deep breath, his mind racing with every possibility. The fate of their world, and every world, hung in the balance. There was only one way forward one decision that could restore what had been lost or unravel everything.

He stepped forward, heart pounding in his chest, and as he held the hourglass high, he made his choice.

The light from the chasm engulfed him, and for a moment, there was only brilliance.
