Chapter 5 - Hidden in plain sight

He managed to avoid an attack from those things hidden in the bush, but his escape truly wasn't over.

After all, their eyes were locked onto him. It was clear that they weren't planning to let him get away.

Yohan: Crap!

He continued to run away. He considered himself lucky for the opportunity to escape. He could see the light at the end, his freedom was soon to come.

That is, it would only come after he lost these things that were chasing him, to which it became a lot harder.

Yohan: I shouldn't have gone through here. Dammit!

He failed to consider the fact that past the bush he jumped over, their was tall grass he had to trek through. Unfortunately, these things were still using the grass to hide their presence. And because of that, he couldn't tell when they would attack. Freedom felt further away than he thought.

Yohan: Fucking hell. Fast... er...

Forgetting to save his breath, he began panting. He needed to get to the other side of the tall grass, before those things kept him there forever. Ar that moment, they could pounce on him, but they haven't yet.

Were they hiding. Maybe they were, and Yohan wanted to test that theory out.

Creak!

Nearby him was a tree branch. He at first questioned it's durability, but the moment was too urgent for such a thing.

And so, he used that branch as leeway to get onto the tree next to him. He jumped to the point were his hands could grab onto the long branch, and he did exactly that. He immediately followed up with a pull-up to which he arrived on the tree by placing his leg on it. With his experience in adventuring, simple parkour like this was no problem. And by luck, that branch turned out to be strong enough to help him climb up. Of course, it wasn't a testament to his weight, but to the tree branches strange properties.

Well, it couldn't truly have be called a tree anyway, after all, the textures were very unusual from the usual smooth or rough textures he usually felt with his hands.

Yohan: Urgh... that hurt less than expected.

And his injured leg told a similar story. His wound should've caused him to writhe in pain while it grinned onto the bumpy surface of the tree. Worst case scenario was that a few microscopic pieces of wood would enter his wound, causing the worst splinter known to mankind.

However that didn't happen. The surface of the 'tree' didn't harm in the slightest. It must've been a relief, but it raised some flags.

This was proof that he was in a different place, or maybe a different world. He didn't want to think of that, or else he would have to face the reality of his biggest nightmare. He didn't want to, especially when he had a different nightmare below him to deal with.

Yohan: Now we wait...

Though, he didn't have to do anything further. He just needed to stay there and watch those things move around. He needed to figure something out.

Yohan: Cowards.

He stood there for a couple of minutes. He heard the grass rustle and watched those things move away. He checked to see if the coast was clear.

After all, these things were truly hiding themselves. That was why they only attacked from the confines of the tall grass, and for a brief moment. Were they simply covert beings, or was it some ulterior motive?

Whatever it was, those things finally acknowledged their failure and went their separate ways. That's what he realized when the sounds of the grass rustling moved further away from him. Finally, an opportunity arose.

Yohan: Finally gone. Now I gotta get away from h--

Yohan turned his face behind him and looked at the monster, which stood close to him than before.

!!

Yohan: Woah.

He had failed to notice the screeching sounds of that monster from before. This whole time he was on the tree, the monster moved closer and closer. After all, Yohan did give 'consent' to the monster to approach him.

Yohan: Shit! Gotta go!

He was sure that those things were no longer hiding in the bush, so realistically he just had to get away from the huge monster. So he descended from the tree by swinging on the branch with one hand, but before he could land on the tall grass, he was stopped.

Bam!

Creak!

Creak!

Snap!

The impact was super painful. He was suddenly headbutted in his stomach by something. The attack transferred so much force throughout Yohans body that the branch he grasped had snapped in his hand.

There seemed to another one of those things, that was hudden in the grass the entire time. Simply waiting for Yohan to lower his guard. It had two yellow eyes like the rest of them. But that was not all.

He saw more than those eyes. It had black fur, four feet, six claws on each of its paws. It had a deformed smile in its mouth, which was in the form of a zigzag.

It was apart of those things that hid in the tall grass. However, it was an exception. It wasn't a coward like those other ones. After all, it wouldn't be right in front of his view if it wasn't.

It looked like a wolf, but was it truly a wolf?

Yohan: Hell no...

And it was that same thing that brought Yohan to the monsters feet.

That thing didnt seem to be the only one with a strange smile. So did the huge monster, which smiled with excitement. It had found a new meal to indulge in. It couldn't contain it happiness, to the point where it opened its wide mouth.

And that's when Yohan saw one of the terrors on the body of that disgusting mother. It's mouth was long, even longer than it's face.

And it truly held purpose, since that abundance of teeth in all four directions wouldn't fit in a regular sized mouth.

Yohan: Aargh!

The 'bug' bite from before, the huge wound on his leg, the headbutt to his stomach. All those pains joined together across his body, making him writhe in pain. He didn't move at all. The pain made him lose focus.

And that would cause another pain to join his body.

Chomp!
