Chapter 3 - Shock

The cold wind that blew through the academy courtyard felt like a cruel reminder of Sean's place in the world. The other students, fully immersed in their magical practices, didn't seem to mind the chill. For them, the wind was nothing more than a *natural element* to manipulate. For Sean, it was just another symbol of his *powerlessness*—a force that could be controlled by everyone but him.

He trudged through the academy, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, trying to ignore the sounds of laughter and magic that echoed in the distance. His classmates were all preparing for the upcoming *sparring match*, a showcase of their magical skills that would determine the strongest student in the academy. Sean had no interest in it—he was used to being the *spectator*, not the participant.

As he passed by one of the practice fields, he caught sight of *Kai* again, surrounded by his usual group of followers. Kai's *flames* were dancing in the air, swirling in intricate patterns as he showed off. His confidence was blinding, his cocky smile making Sean's stomach turn.

"Hey, Sean!" Kai called out, noticing him from across the field. "Still planning on sitting this one out, huh? Or maybe you'll surprise us all and make some *magic* appear? Or is that too much to ask?"

Sean clenched his jaw, trying to ignore him. He knew it was pointless to respond. Kai's taunts were like a broken record, always the same—always designed to make Sean feel small, insignificant.

But today, something inside him was different. The anger that had been simmering within him for so long was rising. He could feel the familiar *heat* in his chest, like a burning ember waiting to ignite.

He turned on his heel and walked away quickly, his heart pounding in his chest. If he stayed any longer, he might actually lose control. He couldn't let that happen.

*Classroom Tension*

The rest of the day felt like a blur. *Magical Theory* was no different from any other class. The students demonstrated their abilities, conjuring spells and performing magical feats that left Sean feeling more isolated than ever.

When it was his turn to demonstrate anything, he always found an excuse. There was no point in trying—he had nothing to show.

But today was different. Today, *Professor Ilona* had announced that the final *sparring match* for the semester would take place that afternoon. The entire class would be paired up, and each pair would face off in front of the others, showcasing their mastery of elemental magic.

Sean's heart sank at the thought. He had no magic to show. He had never participated in one of these matches, and he had no intention of doing so now. But as the class ended and the students gathered in the courtyard for the matches, he felt the pressure building in his chest.

He couldn't hide forever.

As he walked out of the classroom, his gaze shifted to the *sparring field*. The students were already gathering, pairing up with their opponents. Kai was talking animatedly with a group of *fire mages*, all of them laughing and joking, their flames casting an orange glow over the courtyard.

Lira, who had been talking with some of the other students, caught sight of Sean and waved him over.

"Are you going to join in?" she asked with a gentle smile, her silvery hair flowing in the breeze.

Sean hesitated. He didn't want to go. He didn't want to be reminded of how *worthless* he felt. But there was something in Lira's eyes—something that made him feel like he couldn't just walk away.

"I don't know if I can," Sean replied quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't have magic."

Lira stepped closer, her hand resting lightly on his arm. "Magic doesn't define you, Sean. You have more to offer than you think. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. Just… try. Do it for yourself."

Her words were kind, but they didn't make him feel any better. Sean had heard them all before. He had tried to prove himself, to find something—anything—inside of him that would make him feel like he was worth something. But it had never worked.

He looked over at the other students, all of them eagerly preparing for their matches. And then there was him—standing on the sidelines, an invisible spectator in a world full of magic.

Kai's voice rang out again, this time louder, more directed. "Hey, Sean! You going to finally make some magic, or are you just going to keep standing there like a *dead weight*?"

The taunt cut through him like a knife. Sean clenched his fists, feeling the *burning frustration* rise in his chest. He couldn't take it anymore. His head was pounding, his vision blurring as the anger surged through him.

Before he knew it, he was walking toward the sparring ring, his body moving on its own. He didn't know what he was doing. He didn't know why he was doing it. But something inside him—something *dark*—was pushing him forward.

*The Beginning of Change*

The crowd parted as Sean reached the center of the sparring field. The other students stopped talking, their eyes falling on him.

Kai raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "So, the *magic-less wonder* finally decided to join in. What are you going to do, Sean? Show us some *non-magic* moves?"

Sean stood there, his fists clenched at his sides. His mind was racing. The pressure of the moment felt suffocating. He had no magic to show. He had nothing.

But then, something shifted. The anger inside him didn't feel like just *anger* anymore. It was something darker—something more intense. His breathing quickened, and his heart pounded in his chest. The air around him seemed to grow *heavier*, and his vision blurred even more.

Without thinking, he raised his hand.

A *dark shadow* seemed to swirl around him, forming like a mist. It crept up his arm, swirling in tendrils that twisted and coiled like something alive. The crowd gasped, stepping back in fear.

Kai's confident grin faltered as he took a step back. "What the hell is this?"

The shadows around Sean thickened, wrapping around his arm like a dark shroud. His eyes burned with an unfamiliar intensity as he stared at the *darkness* forming around him. He couldn't control it. He couldn't stop it.

"What… is this?" Sean whispered to himself, his voice shaking.

The shadows surged forward, crashing into the ground with a force that sent the nearby students stumbling backward. The ground beneath Sean's feet cracked open, the dark energy pulsing from him like an unstoppable force.

The crowd was silent.

Lira's voice broke through the tension. "Sean… what's happening to you?"

Sean looked down at his hands, the shadows swirling around his body, and for the first time in his life, he felt something that he had never felt before: *power*.
