The forest around them seemed to pulse with an unnatural rhythm, as if the trees themselves were listening, watching. The group moved cautiously through the Shaded Expanse, their nerves on edge after the encounter with the shadow beast.
Soren, still weak from his earlier collapse, limped alongside them. His pale face was drawn tight with fear. "We need to find the Heartstone. It's the only way to close the rift."
"Heartstone?" Kael asked. "What's that?"
Soren glanced at him, his eyes shadowed with unease. "It's a crystal of immense power. It can seal the rift between realms—but it's hidden deep within the Veil Fortress. No one's dared go there for centuries."
"Sounds promising," Finn muttered. "A fortress, a heartstone, and no one's been there for ages. What could go wrong?"
Tessa shot him a look. "If you're done cracking jokes, maybe we can focus on getting out of here alive."
"I like my jokes, Tessa," Finn replied with a grin. "They help me survive."
Nyx rolled her eyes, but Kael couldn't help but chuckle. Even in the midst of everything, Finn had a way of lightening the mood.
But the laughter didn't last long. As they continued deeper into the forest, the atmosphere grew more oppressive. The air thickened, and the ground beneath their feet began to tremble slightly.
"This doesn't feel right," Nyx muttered, her hand tightening around her dagger.
Kael's heart pounded in his chest as he glanced at the artifact. Its glow had dimmed considerably, its energy almost... erratic.
"You're right," Kael said, his voice low. "Something's coming."
Before anyone could respond, the trees ahead of them parted with a violent crack. A figure emerged from the shadows—tall, cloaked in black, with a mask covering its face.
"Another one of these guys?" Finn said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Seriously, how many dark, masked figures are there in this place?"
The masked figure spoke, its voice cold and menacing. "You've ventured too far, child." It looked directly at Kael, its gaze penetrating. "The Shadow King has seen you."
Kael's blood ran cold. "The Shadow King? Who—what is that?"
The figure took a step forward, its hand raising slowly. "The Shadow King is the ruler of the dark realms—the one who controls the shadows that seek to consume all worlds." The figure's tone was filled with disdain. "And you are playing with forces far beyond your understanding."
Soren's eyes widened. "We can't stay here. If the King's servant found us, we're already too late."
The masked figure raised its hand, and suddenly, the ground began to crack. Dark tendrils of shadow shot up from the earth, wrapping around Kael and his companions. The shadows pulled at them, draining their strength with every passing second.
"Get ready!" Finn yelled, swinging Jeffrey wildly to cut through the shadows.
Tessa fired a bolt, but the shadows seemed to absorb it, vanishing into the dark tendrils.
Kael's grip on the artifact tightened, and he called out to it, "Help us!"
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, with a pulse of energy, the artifact flared to life. The shadows recoiled, screeching in pain as the artifact's light grew brighter.
The masked figure hissed in anger, retreating into the shadows. "You may have won this round, but you cannot escape what's coming."
With a final, furious gesture, the figure disappeared, leaving the forest silent once again.
Kael, gasping for breath, turned to his companions. "What was that?"
Nyx's eyes were sharp. "That was a servant of the Shadow King. And that warning wasn't just talk. We've attracted their attention."
Soren gripped his side, still pale but standing. "We have no time to waste. The Heartstone is our only chance now. If the King's servants know we're here, they'll stop at nothing to prevent us from reaching it."
"We'll get to the Heartstone," Kael said, his voice firm. "We have to. It's the only way to stop this."
Tessa nodded. "Let's move out."
They walked in silence for a time, the weight of the encounter settling in. Kael couldn't shake the feeling that the battle had only just begun. The Shadow King's servants were relentless—and the closer they got to the Heartstone, the greater the dangers would become.
But Kael was determined. The artifact pulsed with energy in his hands, and he could feel the power building inside of him. It wasn't just about surviving anymore. It was about stopping the darkness that threatened everything he knew.
Finn broke the silence with a grin. "So, when do we get to fight some actual monsters? Because this is starting to feel like a really bad tour of a haunted forest."
Nyx glared at him.
