The air conditioner hummed softly in Ethan Blackwood's big penthouse. Claire sat at the edge of the fancy leather couch, staring out at the city. Her hands were tightly clasped on her lap as if she was trying to hold herself together. Ethan sat across the room, glued to his phone. His brow was furrowed as he typed away at emails.
Even though they shared the same space, it felt like they were miles apart. The peace they'd started to build was falling apart, thanks to Katherine and Victor.
Claire finally broke the quiet. "Ethan, we need to talk."
He looked up, sensing how serious she was. He put his phone down and focused on her. "What's up?"
She took a breath, picking her words. "I feel like we're losing the little progress we've made. Katherine and your dad—they're trying hard to come between us, and it's working."
Ethan sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I know. I'm trying to fix things, but they won't let up."
Claire stood and began to pace. "It's not just about them. It's about us. This marriage started as a business deal, but things are different now. I don't know where we stand, and I don't think you do either."
Her words hit hard. Ethan stood up too, his body language strong but not threatening. "I know this isn't what you wanted. But I'm trying—trying to protect you from all this."
She stopped and faced him, frustration in her eyes. "I don't need protecting, Ethan. I need you to be honest. If this is just a deal for you, say so. But if it's more, I deserve to know."
Ethan stepped closer, his eyes locked on hers. "It is more. It always has been, even if I didn't want to admit it."
His honesty surprised her. Claire looked into his eyes, searching for any lies, but saw none.
Just then, the elevator dinged, breaking the moment. Ethan turned to the door, his mood darkening. Katherine walked in without waiting for an invite.
"Am I interrupting?" Katherine asked, her voice dripping with fake sweetness as she looked between them.
"What are you doing here?" Ethan snapped, his patience running thin.
"Oh come on, Ethan. I just came to talk," she replied, pretending to be innocent.
"There is no us," he stated firmly, stepping in front of Claire to block Katherine. "You need to leave. Now."
Claire stood tall, though she felt shaken. "Why are you even here, Katherine? Haven't you done enough damage?"
Katherine smirked. "Oh, sweet Claire. You don't know what you're in for, do you? This isn't some fairy tale. Ethan doesn't belong with someone like you, and you know it deep down."
Ethan clenched his fists and stepped closer to Katherine. "Enough. Get out before I call security."
Katherine's smirk wavered for a second but came back. "Fine. Don't think this is over, Ethan. You're making a mistake, and you'll realize it sooner or later."
As the elevator doors shut behind her, Claire let out a shaky breath. Ethan turned back to her, his look softening. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, though she felt fragile. "I'm fine. But Ethan, this can't keep happening. Katherine and your dad... they're tearing us apart."
Ethan took her hands in his. "I won't let that happen. I'll handle my dad and make sure Katherine stays away. But I need you to trust me."
Claire wanted to believe him, but the heavy burden of their situation made it hard. She nodded slowly, hoping that Ethan could keep his promise.

The next morning, Ethan walked into Blackwood Manor with determination. Victor was in his study, surrounded by dark wood furniture and the smell of cigars.
Without greeting him, Ethan said, "This is not a plea. It's a warning. Stay out of my marriage, and stay away from Claire."
Victor didn't seem impressed. "And if I don't?"
"Then I'll walk away. From you, the company, everything."
Victor looked angry. "You wouldn't dare."
"Try me," Ethan shot back coldly. "I'm done letting you run my life. You've taken enough already. I won't let you take Claire too."
Victor stood up, trying to intimidate him. "You're throwing away your future for her? She won't survive the pressure, Ethan. She's not strong enough."
"You're wrong," Ethan insisted. "Claire is stronger than you know. And unlike you, she cares about me—not my money or my power, but me."
The room was tense, the air thick with electricity. Victor's voice lowered, sounding menacing. "If you walk away, don't expect to come back. You'll lose everything."
Ethan didn't hesitate. "Then so be it."
He turned and left, his heart racing, but his determination clear.
---
Back at the penthouse, Claire was busy planning an upcoming event. She loved event planning; it was a nice break from the chaos. When Ethan walked in, she could see he was tense.
"How did it go?" she asked gently.
Ethan flopped onto the couch, running a hand through his hair. "It's done. I told him I'll walk away if he doesn't back off."
Claire sat next to him, placing a hand on his arm. "Ethan, that's a big risk."
"I know," he said. "But you're worth it. I'd risk everything for you."
Her heart swelled, but fear lingered. "I just hope it's enough."
Ethan pulled her close. "It will be. We'll get through this together."
But even as they held on to each other, the trouble around them didn't seem to fade. Katherine and Victor were far from done, and their struggles were only beginning.

Later that night, Claire sat in front of her laptop. She was brainstorming ideas for her event planning business. It felt like a dream, but it kept her going. She could hear Ethan talking on the phone next door. His deep voice was calming, but the tension hung in the air.
She had spent so much time just getting by. Taking care of her family, worked hard at Blackwood Enterprises, and never gave herself a break. She had pushed her dreams aside, thinking she could wait. But now, with everything happening, she knew she couldn't ignore her path anymore.
Her heart hurt at the thought of disappointing Ethan. He had always supported her, but this was her future. Her dreams. Could she keep sacrificing what she wanted to stay in a marriage that wasn't based on love? The thought of losing everything she worked for was frightening.
Just as she was about to shut her laptop, Ethan walked in. His face showed no clear emotion. His hand rested softly on the back of her chair. "Claire, we need to talk."
She turned to him, feeling the weight of everything. "About what?"
Ethan hesitated. "About what comes next. I know this marriage is complicated, but I want to make sure we know where we're heading."
Claire's heart raced. "What do you mean?"
"I mean... we can't keep living like this. The pressure from my family, Katherine—it's tearing us apart. I need to know if you're with me. If you're willing to fight for us, no matter what."
A lump formed in her throat. She had feared this moment, knowing what it meant. Ethan wanted her to commit—to believe in their marriage and their future. But could she?
The storm brewed outside, but for the first time, she felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe they could fight for each other. Maybe they could face their challenges together and build something real.
But as Ethan waited for her answer, Claire couldn't shake the feeling that they were on the edge of something much bigger than themselves.
