The penthouse felt extra cold. Tension filled the space between Ethan and Claire. Every day made it worse. Claire was pulling away, trying to handle it all by herself. Ethan's silence was tough to bear. It made her rethink everything—their marriage, their future, and if any of it had ever been real.
Then one day, Ethan got a surprise call. It was Katherine.
"Hey, Ethan! Long time, no talk," Katherine said, her voice sweet but a bit creepy.
Ethan tensed at the sound of her voice. He tightened his grip on the table. Claire sat nearby, lost in her book, completely unaware. He thought about ignoring the call. Katherine loved stirring up trouble. But he answered anyway.
"Katherine," he said, keeping his voice flat. "What do you want?"
"Is that how you greet an old friend? We used to be close," she said, sounding fake nice. "I just wanted to see how things are going. I've heard some rumors…"
Ethan's heart raced. "Rumors?" he said, trying to stay calm. Was this about Claire? Was Katherine behind it?
"Yes," Katherine said, her tone almost pitying. "I know things have been rough for you. A lot has changed, right? But I'm sure you can handle it, Ethan. You've always been good at keeping things under control." She paused. "But I wonder if you are… in control."
Katherine had a way of making him doubt himself. She didn't hesitate to use Claire as a weapon against him.
"Is this necessary?" he asked, trying to sound steady.
"Oh, I think so," she replied, her voice smooth. "You've got a lot going on—Blackwood Enterprises, rumors, and your beautiful wife…" There was a pause. "But I can't help but feel you're losing control of your marriage, Ethan. Claire isn't like the others, is she?"
Ethan's heart dropped. He thought of Claire—her quiet determination, shutting him out. He'd been distant, caught in his mess. But Katherine was right. He had lost control of what mattered most. Was this her plan? To weasel back into his life?
"I'm fine, Katherine. You don't need to worry about me," he said, feeling colder. "But please stop the rumors. They're unnecessary."
Katherine let out a soft laugh. "I'm not spreading rumors, Ethan. Just looking out for you. If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here."
Her words felt toxic, and he couldn't shake the feeling she wasn't done with him.
The next few days got even colder between Ethan and Claire. He tried to focus on work, but Katherine's words lingered like a shadow. Claire seemed distant too. She had her struggles, but her glances held too much-unspoken emotion. Katherine's games began to chip away at their marriage. Every moment together felt like a performance, hiding real tension. And Katherine wanted back in.
One evening, while Claire and Ethan sat in the living room, the doorbell rang. Ethan's stomach dropped when he saw Katherine's name on his phone.
"Excuse me," he said quietly, stepping out for privacy. Claire watched him leave, a sense of dread creeping in. She sensed something wasn't right.
She got up and went to the kitchen, trying to distract herself. But her mind kept drifting back to earlier. Ethan had been so distant. Was Katherine behind it?
Frustration bubbled up inside her, and she slammed a glass on the counter. Why did Katherine have to come back? What game was she playing?
In the living room, Ethan paced, fighting to keep calm as Katherine's voice rattled around. "Ethan, I know you're going through a lot," she said calmly. "But I can help. Just let me back in. You know you can't do it alone."
He clenched his fists. Katherine's words hit harder than he liked. He was struggling. His marriage felt like a ticking time bomb. Was she trying to play him?
"No," he said, cutting her off. "I don't need your help."
But Katherine wasn't finished. "You've always been fine. But are you happy? I can give you what you need—what Claire can't."
The next morning, the air was thick with unspoken tension. Ethan barely spoke to Claire. She felt it—the distance was real. But she had no idea how to bridge the gap. Katherine's manipulations were soaking into their marriage. Every word felt like an attempt to split them apart, to make Ethan doubt his love for Claire.
Claire couldn't ignore it anymore. She knew something was wrong. Katherine was playing games, trying to worm her way back into Ethan's life. She needed to confront it.
That evening, with the sun setting and darkness settling in, Claire decided it was time to talk. She couldn't pretend anymore. Not while feeling like she was losing Ethan to his past.
Ethan was on the balcony, staring out at the city. He didn't notice Claire until she spoke, her voice steady yet urgent.
"What's going on?" she asked. "You've been distant. And I know Katherine is behind it."
Ethan stiffened but didn't turn around. "Claire, we don't need to discuss this now."
"Yes, we do," she insisted, stepping closer. "I'm tired of pretending. You've been talking to her, haven't you?"
His silence told her everything. Her heart sank as the truth hit home. Katherine was back, plotting trouble. And Ethan was letting it happen.
"Why, Ethan? Why are you letting her back in? What does she have over you?" Claire asked, frustration rising.
"It's not like that, Claire. She's been there for me," he said, finally turning to face her. "But I'm not choosing her. It's you."
Claire shook her head. "You say that, but can I trust it? Every time she comes around, it feels like you drift away from me. Do you even see what she's doing?"
He stepped closer, his voice softer now. "I don't want to lose you. I'm trying to keep everything together, but Katherine... she's always been there."
Tears filled Claire's eyes. "And I've always been here. But I can't keep fighting when it feels like you're pushing me away for her. I won't play her games."
The air thickened, heavy with everything they hadn't said before. Claire could feel the walls closing in. Katherine's return had turned everything upside down.
As night fell, both knew things couldn't go on like this. Their future was uncertain, filled with doubt and hurt. Claire made up her mind. She wouldn't let Katherine dictate their story.
But could Ethan let go of the past? And could Claire trust him again?
As city lights twinkled outside, they both faced the same question: Could they save their relationship, or had Katherine already won?
Time will tell.
