Chapter 15 - Unexpected Allies

Claire had always been the strong one in her family. She took on a lot of responsibility. From a young age, she made sure everything was okay. She looked out for others and often put their needs before her own. She dreamed of starting her own event planning business. That dream kept her motivated, even when life got tough. But things didn't turn out the way she had hoped.

That evening, Claire sat at the kitchen table in the Blackwood mansion. The lamp above her cast long shadows. She stared at the paperwork in front of her—family estate stuff reports from Blackwood Enterprises, and a list of tasks that felt endless. It all felt overwhelming. Her dream of event planning now seemed so far away. She told herself if she worked hard enough, it would happen. But life was proving to be more difficult than that. The media pressure, her marriage to Ethan, and money issues made it hard for her to plan for her future.

She leaned back in her chair and sighed. The room felt too quiet. It was heavy, almost suffocating. Her thoughts raced from worry to worry, but nothing made sense. She tried to focus on the papers, but the words blurred together. All she could feel was how lost she was.

Just then, her phone buzzed on the table. The sound broke her focus. She saw a message from her sister, Margaret. A wave of relief washed over her. Margaret was the one person who understood her. She was the Claire before all the responsibilities and complications.

Margaret: Hey sis, how's it going? I haven't heard from you in a while.

Claire quickly replied, trying to hide her tiredness.

Claire: Just busy with everything. I'm fine. What about you?

A moment later, her phone buzzed again.

Margaret: You don't sound fine. Call me when you can. We need to talk.

Claire hesitated. She didn't want to add to Margaret's worries. But as she looked at the screen, she realized that Margaret wasn't just her sister. She was someone who saw her, the real Claire, not just the responsible one. Maybe it was time to lean on her.

Claire got up and rubbed her eyes. She felt tired, but she pushed that aside. She needed to talk to Margaret. She walked to the living room, plopped down on the couch, and called her sister.

It rang three times before Margaret answered.

Margaret: Claire, great to hear from you! Are you okay?

Claire felt warmth at hearing her sister's voice. There was care in her words.

Claire: I'm okay, just... tired. It's a lot, Margaret. I'm trying my best, but sometimes it feels too much.

Margaret's tone softened.

Margaret: I can only imagine. You don't have to do this alone, Claire. I'm always here for you.

Claire felt a lump in her throat. She realized how much she missed hearing that. How much she longed for someone to remind her she wasn't alone.

Claire: I know. I just don't want to be a burden.

Margaret: You're not a burden. You're human. You've handled so much. Let me help you. I'm not going anywhere.

Claire took a deep breath. For so long, she tried to do it all alone. Asking for help felt weak. But now she saw that Margaret was right. She didn't have to face everything by herself.

Claire: I just don't know what to do. Ethan and I barely talk. My family relies on me, and I feel lost.

There was a pause. Claire could hear her sister breathing, and then Margaret spoke up.

Margaret: You're still you, Claire. You're in a tough spot. You've always put others first. Now it's your turn.

Claire's heart sank. She had forgotten about herself. When was it time for her dreams or needs?

Claire: I feel like I'm failing at everything.

Margaret: You're not failing. You're doing what you can. Let yourself breathe. No one expects you to be perfect.

Claire exhaled. Margaret's words felt good. She had been scared of failing, but her sister's reassurance reminded her it was okay not to have all the answers.

Claire: I've been hiding so much, Margaret. Ethan and I… it's not what it looks like. The marriage contract was never about love, and I can't keep pretending.

Another pause. Claire worried about what her sister would say.

But Margaret responded with love and understanding.

Margaret: You don't have to pretend. You've been strong, but you don't have to do everything. If Ethan isn't what you thought, you need to talk to him. You deserve honesty and happiness.

Claire nodded, even though Margaret couldn't see it. The truth hit her hard. She deserved to be happy. She wasn't stuck forever. She could take control of her life again.

Claire: You're right. I need to stop being afraid. It's time to take back control.

Margaret: Yes! I'm with you all the way. Don't forget—you have a dream too! The event planning business! It can still happen.

Claire smiled. Margaret's words sparked something inside her. It had been a while since she thought of her dream. She had pushed it aside, but now it felt possible again.

Claire: I've been so focused on everything else that I forgot about that dream. Maybe I'll take it one step at a time.

Margaret: That's the spirit! You can do this. Let's chat tomorrow, okay? I want to help.

Claire: Thanks, Margaret. I don't know what I'd do without you.

Margaret: You'll never have to find out. I'm always here.

After the call, Claire felt peace for the first time in weeks. She didn't have to face this alone. With Margaret by her side, they could tackle it together.

The next morning, Claire woke up feeling refreshed. She thought a lot about what Margaret said. It was time to stop hiding. She needed to live for herself and take that first step towards her dream. The thought of her event planning business excited her.

Later that day, Claire walked through the offices of Blackwood Enterprises. The shiny floors sparkled, and her footsteps echoed. She had made a choice: it was time to meet her business mentor. This was someone who had believed in her for years. Claire had ignored their advice before, but now she was ready to listen.

As she passed Ethan's office, their eyes met for a brief moment. His look was still cold. But there was something else—a flicker of understanding. She didn't have time to dwell on it. Claire had her path now, and nothing was going to hold her back.

She had taken the first step. And that mattered most.
